Thibaut Courtois has firmly dismissed claims that players at Real Madrid had issues with manager Xabi Alonso, insisting the squad remains fully professional and committed to the coach’s tactical approach.
The Belgian goalkeeper made the comments a day after Madrid produced a commanding 3–0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash.
Speaking about the criticism surrounding Alonso’s methods, Courtois rejected the suggestion that players were unhappy with the tactical work or video sessions under the Spanish coach. “No player set up Xabi Alonso. I think we did good work,” Courtois said, addressing the rumours directly.
The Madrid goalkeeper also pointed out that detailed tactical preparation is a normal part of elite football, referencing his experience under other demanding managers.
“They said we hate tactics, we hate the videos… look, I had Antonio Conte who did one hour of work every day and we didn’t mind it because we are professionals,” he added.
Courtois emphasized that Madrid actually began their campaign under Alonso strongly before experiencing a natural dip in form during the season. “The first months with Xabi went very well and then we hit a slump. This happens in football,” he explained.
