Northern Districts were crowned champions of the Super Smash 2025-26 after registering a five-wicket victory over Canterbury in the final at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on Saturday.
Chasing a target of 172, Northern Districts reached 173 for 5 in 17.5 overs to seal the title, finishing the contest with 13 balls to spare. The chase was anchored by a strong middle-order effort after a brisk start from the top.
Brett Hampton played a decisive role with the bat, scoring a rapid 55 off 26 deliveries, striking five sixes to put Canterbury under sustained pressure. Joe Carter followed up with a fluent 47 off 28 balls, ensuring Northern Districts maintained the required momentum through the middle overs. Katene D Clarke also chipped in with 33 at the top, while Scott Kuggeleijn remained unbeaten on 23 to guide the side home.
Earlier, Canterbury posted 171 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs after being put in to bat. Mitchell Hay and Leo Carter were the standout performers, scoring 56 off 34 balls and an unbeaten 54 off 36 balls respectively. The pair helped Canterbury recover after early setbacks and build a competitive total in the final.
Northern Districts’ bowling effort was led by Michael Rae, who picked up three wickets for 37 runs, while Brett Hampton also claimed three wickets to restrict Canterbury’s scoring in the death overs.
Despite a late surge from Canterbury, Northern Districts held their nerve in the chase to complete a successful run pursuit and lift the Super Smash trophy, wrapping up their campaign with a composed performance in the final.
