Teenage boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away five days after being knocked out in her last professional bout. The 18-year-old welterweight boxer was knocked out by Marie Pier Houle in the fourth round at the GVM Gala International in Montreal on Saturday.
She looked to have a seizure after getting knocked out. She was dazed after getting the brunt of a left uppercut and a right hook. She was taken to the hospital after the fight.
The fight promoter Yvon Michel announced this very tragic news today. His statement said that it is with great sadness and torment that they learnt from a representative of her family that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away this afternoon at 3:45 pm. He continued saying that the entire team at Groupe Yvon Michel team was extremely distressed by the announcement of her death. Her opponent Houle said that she was very upset with the news of her death. She said that boxing does bring a lot of stakes and dangers and this was their job and passion and it was never her intention to seriously hurt anyone and it was never part of their plans.
World Boxing Council has also given a tribute to Zapata saying that the president of the council Mauricio Sulaimán and the entire boxing family associated with the council as well as all of the boxing will mourn her loss. They ended by saying that they send the deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jeanette and hopes that she rest in peace.
