According to the genome sequencing report, every sample from Madhya Pradesh in June was found to be a Delta variant. Worldwide concern has been growing because of the mutation.

The rise in the Delta’s share in Madhya Pradesh’s tested samples was from 57% in April to 69% in May. And a 100% in June, stated the report from the National Centre of Disease Control (NCDC).

The predominant variant in MP till march was the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7). However, since then Delta had become the biggest contributing factor behind the rise in Covid infections in Madhya Pradesh. NCDC reports said that out of 1,332 458 (34%) were found to be Delta.

Health commissioner Akash Tripathi shared, “Delta is the predominant variant in the state for the last three months and Delta-plus has been detected in only eight cases in MP.”

Tripathi further added that 2,000 samples have been sent to NCDC for genome sequencing so far. They are based on certain parameters including severe infection, post-vaccination infection, long hospital stay, and infection with comorbidities.

When he was asked about the actions taken to track these new variants, Tripathi said, “We are sending around 300 samples per month from across the state to NCDC for genome sequencing for better surveillance.”
