On Wednesday, April 6, India’s first COVID-19 variant XE was reported in Mumbai. The patient affected by the new variant has not shown any severe effects informed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a media release.
The World Health Organisation had earlier warned regarding the XE variant of the virus. The health body had claimed the new variant to be more transmissible than any other variant of the COVID-19 virus.
The affected person is reported to be a 50-year-old woman who has travel history from South Africa. The XE variant was first detected in the UK in January of this year & has spread to several countries. Apart from the XE variant one Kappa variant is also reported in Mumbai.
Recently the government of the state had removed the restriction imposed due to the pandemic. Maintaining social distancing & wearing masks were made voluntary. The detection of the new variant can be alarming as it is reported to be more transmissible.
