Gujarat reports its first case of Omicron XE variant; states put on high alert

A 60-years-old male from Gujarat has been found infected with the variant and is under observation of Vadodara Municipal Corporation.

The man had tested COVID positive on March 12 after traveling to Vadodara from Mumbai. According to the reports by ET, he travelled with his wife from Mumbai, “Since he was from outside the state, his sample was sent for genome sequencing and the results revealed that this was a case of Omicron XE variant,” said Dr. Devesh Patel, Medical Officer, Vadodara municipal Corporation.

“However, the man has returned to Mumbai with his wife and his identity documents revealed an address of Santacruz, Mumbai” Patel said, adding that the case documents are now being handed over to the authorities in Maharashtra.

According to the World Health Organizaton, COVID XE variant has been found in UK and has confirmed that it is transmissible than BA.2 variant.

“Hours after report of detection of XE variant of Coronavirus in Mumbai, @MoHFW_INDIA has said present evidence does not suggest the presence of the new variant,” PIB Maharashtra said in a tweet on Thursday.
