As of 17th August, there are 596K confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 20,037 confirmed deaths in Maharashtra. Out of these 1,043 are prisoners and 302 are jail staff according to the State Prison Department.
10,480 prisoners have been released out of which 2,444 have been released on parole and 8,036 have been released on bail to avoid overcrowding during the pandemic.
These actions have been taken on the recommendations of the High Power Committee.
