Tehsildar Ajit Shelar today said that 229 students who were residing at the hostel of Bhavna Public School in Maharashtra’s Washim district have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
Apart from the students, 4 staff members have also tested positive for the virus and the school campus has been declared a containment zone with complete restriction of movement for everyone except emergency workers.
A total of 327 students were previously residing at the hostel and it is currently unknown if the students who tested negative will be returned to their homes or sent to quarantine centers. Out of all the students who had joined the hostel only two weeks ago on 14th of February, 21 had tested positive resulting which it was decided to make all students undergo the RT-PCR test.
A similar case had been reported earlier this week when 39 students and 5 staffers of a Maharashtra school in Latur district had tested positive.
Maharashtra yesterday witnessed a 4-month high of 8,807 cases of infection being reported in a single day, which last time had happened on 21st of October in 2020 after which the state had been seeing a healthy and desirable decline in infections. The state yesterday also reported 80 coronavirus-related deaths in a single day.
