The Ministry of Steel has announced significant measures to enhance the utilization of indigenous coking coal and promote the decarbonization of India’s steel industry. Given that steel production is a deregulated sector, individual companies make decisions based on technological advancements and market dynamics.
To reduce reliance on imports and optimize domestic resources, Indian steel companies and coal firms are increasing coal washing capacities. This process helps reduce ash content, making domestic coking coal more suitable for steel production. Additionally, the adoption of stamp-charged coke oven batteries in steel plants is expected to boost the usage of local coking coal.
As part of India’s broader green energy transition, the Ministry of Steel released the “Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan” in 2024. The report outlines various strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in steel manufacturing. The roadmap aims to guide the industry in adopting energy-efficient technologies while maintaining competitiveness in global markets.
The government’s initiatives align with its commitment to self-reliance in steel production while minimizing environmental impact. These steps are crucial for India’s long-term energy security, sustainability goals, and positioning the country as a global leader in green steel production.
