India’s coal imports declined by 3.1% during the April-October 2024 period, totaling 149.39 million tonnes (MT) compared to 154.17 MT in the same period last year. The decline was more pronounced in the Non-Regulated Sector (excluding the power sector), which recorded an 8.8% year-on-year decrease.
Key Data:
- Coal imports for blending by thermal plants: Declined by 19.5% year-on-year, despite a 3.87% increase in coal-based power generation during the same period.
- Imported coal-based power plants: Saw a 38.4% rise in imports to 30.04 MT, up from 21.71 MT last year.
- Domestic coal production: Increased by 6.04%, reaching 537.57 MT, compared to 506.93 MT during the same period in FY 2023-24.
The data reflects a reduction in coal imports for blending and an increase in domestic coal production, while imports for plants dependent on imported coal have risen. The Ministry of Coal continues to focus on measures aimed at addressing the supply-demand dynamics.
