In a significant boost to its naval aviation capabilities, India has cleared a mega deal to procure 26 Rafale Marine fighter aircraft from France in a government-to-government agreement estimated to be worth over ₹63,000 crore. The Indian Navy will receive 22 single-seater and four twin-seater Rafale M jets under the deal, according to government sources cited by ANI.
The agreement includes a comprehensive package covering fleet maintenance, logistical support, personnel training, and offset obligations for indigenous manufacturing components. Training for naval personnel is also part of the contract.
Deliveries of the advanced carrier-based jets are expected to begin around four years after the deal is signed. The first batch is likely to arrive by the end of 2029, with the full delivery of all 26 jets projected to be completed by 2031.
These Rafale M jets will be deployed aboard India’s aircraft carriers — INS Vikramaditya and the indigenously-built INS Vikrant — replacing the ageing MiG-29K fleet currently in service. The Rafale M is specifically designed for naval operations, featuring reinforced landing gear, arrester hooks, and a strengthened frame for STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) operations, enabling efficient launch and recovery from aircraft carriers.
This strategic acquisition will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s power projection and maritime defence capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.
