At the renovated grave of Janab Maqbool Sherwani who was killed by the raiders from Pakistan in 1947 for delaying their march towards Srinagar on the Uri-Muzaffarabad highway, remembrance prayers were held on Thursday by the Indian Army as per a report released by India Today.
In the old town in Baramulla, the grave of Maqbool Sherwani is located. While the renovation work of the grave began in April 2021 by the Indian Army, it now stands completed.
Indulging in plunder, raid and murder of innocent people in Kashmir, the raiders from Pakistan in November, 1947 were successfully misguided by Maqbool Sherwani on to the wrong path when he was asked to guide them towards Srinagar airport. The fastest access to Srinagar was protected by setting up Roadblocks and demolished bridges by Maqbool Sherwani along with his volunteers, comprising various communities who had no military training. Maqbool Sherwani’s body was mutilated and crucified before firing 14 bullets on it by the raiders when they realise that they had been misled by him.
The body of Maqbool Sherwani was tied and nailed to a plank till the Indian Army got it down and he died on 7th November 1947. Mahatma Gandhi paid tribute to him in a prayer meeting in Delhi two weeks after his death, to honour him.
After Maqbool Sherwani, the second battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir light infantry has been named Sherwani Paltan by the Indian Army.
