GE Aerospace has successfully delivered the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mk 1A, marking a significant milestone in India’s indigenous defence manufacturing programme.
The F404-IN20 engines will power the Mk 1A variant of the Tejas fighter jet, an advanced version of India’s homegrown light combat aircraft. This delivery marks a continuation of GE Aerospace’s 40-year partnership with HAL and reflects the growing emphasis on strengthening India’s military self-reliance through domestic production.
“This is a proud moment and a major step in our ongoing commitment to support India’s defence capabilities,” GE Aerospace said in a statement. The F404-IN20 engine, known for its enhanced thrust and durability, was initially selected in 2004 after GE’s collaboration with India’s Aeronautical Development Agency in the 1980s.
The deal for 99 engines was announced in 2023 and is valued at around $700 million. The Tejas Mk 1A jets powered by these engines will play a crucial role in modernizing the Indian Air Force’s fleet.
