Under the direction of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, the Defence Purchase Council (DAC) has approved several capital purchase plans worth a combined Rs 84,560 crore. The permissions were given on February 16, 2024, and emphasised a special focus on obtaining equipment from Indian vendors, demonstrating a dedication to ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance).
Under the Buy {Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDDM)} category, one of the major approvals relates to the purchase of a new generation of anti-tank mines that have remote deactivation features and seismic sensors for increased safety.
To strengthen the operational efficiency and supremacy in the Tactical Battle Area, the DAC has also given the green light for the procurement of the Canister Launched Anti-Armour Loiter Munition System, catering to engaging targets Beyond the Visual Line of Sight for Mechanised Forces.
The DAC’s dedication to bolstering Air Defence Systems is apparent with the approval for the procurement of Air Defence Tactical Control Radar under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. The objective of this action is to improve the ability to detect small, slow-moving, and low-flying objects as well as to monitor, detect, and track various targets.
To strengthen maritime capabilities, the DAC has approved the purchase of Medium Range Maritime Reconnaissance and Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft under the Buy and Make category. The Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy should be able to monitor and interdict more of the wide marine area due to this.
The DAC has authorised the purchase of Active Towed Array Sonar under the Buy (Indian) category in response to the risks presented by rivals. This will provide Indian Naval Ships the ability to detect hostile submarines from a considerable distance. The additional objective of the AoN for HeavyWeight Torpedoes is to improve the Kalvari Class submarines’ offensive power.
The DAC has also granted AoN for Follow On Support (FOS) and Repair Replenishment support through Follow On Supply Support (FOSS) for 24 MH60R aircraft under the Foreign Military Sale route in cooperation with the US Government, acknowledging the requirement for sustainment support.
It has also approved the purchase of Flight Refueller Aircraft, increasing the operational capabilities and reach of the Indian Air Force.
Additionally, by approving AoN under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category for Software Defined Radios, the DAC has proved that it is forward-thinking. This enables the Indian Coast Guard to meet its high-speed communication needs with secure networking capabilities, facilitating smooth information exchange with Indian Navy units.
