India’s coal sector demonstrated robust growth in January 2025, with coal production climbing 4.38% to 104.43 million tonnes (MT) compared to 100.05 MT in January 2024. This performance was largely driven by Captive, Commercial, and Other Entities, which collectively produced 19.68 MT, reflecting a strong 31.07% rise from 15.01 MT produced during the same month last year. State-owned giants like Coal India Limited (CIL) also contributed significantly to the overall production surge.
Cumulative Coal Production and Dispatches
For the period from April 2024 to January 2025, cumulative coal production reached 830.66 MT, registering a 5.88% growth compared to 784.51 MT in the same period last year. This growth reflects the government’s continued focus on meeting domestic coal demand and reducing dependency on imports. Major mines and captive projects operated at higher capacities during this period, supporting production targets.
Coal Dispatches See Solid Growth
Coal dispatches also witnessed a notable increase. In January 2025, 92.40 MT of coal was dispatched, marking a 6.31% YoY rise compared to 86.92 MT in January 2024. The dispatches from Captive and Commercial Entities grew significantly by 29.94%, reaching 17.72 MT, up from 13.64 MT last year.
Cumulatively, coal dispatch for the April 2024 to January 2025 period rose to 843.75 MT, up 5.73% from 797.81 MT during the same period last year. Dispatches to the power sector remained the key driver, given the rising electricity demand in the country.
Power Sector and Import Reduction
The government’s push for coal-based power generation, combined with increased mining efficiency and infrastructure upgrades, has led to consistent dispatch growth. The Ministry of Coal also emphasized the reduction of imported coal usage as part of its ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. With India targeting near-zero imports of non-coking coal, the latest production figures indicate progress toward achieving that goal.
Coal India’s Role and Sectoral Outlook
Coal India Limited (CIL) continues to play a pivotal role, contributing the majority of domestic production. The company has ramped up capacity expansions, opened new mines, and implemented advanced mining technologies to meet future demands. With the upcoming summer season and the likelihood of higher electricity consumption, coal production and dispatches are expected to further accelerate.
