IndiGo has commenced its inaugural daily nonstop service between Kolkata and Shanghai effective March 29, 2026, marking a significant expansion of India-China air connectivity and bringing one of the world’s most important financial centres directly within reach of eastern India for the first time on a daily basis.

The new Kolkata-Shanghai route is being operated on IndiGo’s A320neo aircraft and takes IndiGo’s total weekly flights to mainland China to 21, combining the new Shanghai service with existing daily connectivity from Delhi and Kolkata to Guangzhou.

Flight Schedule — Kolkata to Shanghai and Back

Flight 6E 1709 departs Kolkata daily at 21:45 and arrives in Shanghai the following morning at 04:40. Flight 6E 1710 departs Shanghai daily at 05:40 and arrives in Kolkata at 09:05. All timings are in local time zones. The route is operated every day of the week with no gaps in service.

Why This Route Matters

The Kolkata-Shanghai direct connection is significant for several reasons that go beyond the immediate convenience of a new flight. Kolkata is eastern India’s primary commercial and financial hub, serving West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and the northeastern states. Shanghai is one of the world’s leading financial and commercial centres and China’s primary gateway for global trade and manufacturing. A daily direct link between these two cities opens a meaningful commercial corridor for business travel, trade delegations, and supply chain connectivity between eastern India and the world’s second largest economy.

With the addition of Shanghai, IndiGo now enables passengers from several Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur, and Bhubaneswar to connect to Shanghai via Kolkata, turning the city into a hub for China-bound traffic from across the subcontinent.

Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said the airline now operates 21 weekly flights to mainland China. “Shanghai is one of the world’s leading financial and commercial centres, and an important gateway for global trade. This new route will facilitate increased business as well as leisure travel opportunities and enable greater cultural and economic exchange between the two countries,” Malhotra said in the company’s official statement.

The India-China Aviation Context

IndiGo’s Kolkata-Shanghai launch is part of a broader reinstatement and expansion of India-China aviation connectivity that had been significantly curtailed during the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. The Kolkata-Guangzhou reinstatement and the Delhi-Guangzhou service preceded the Shanghai launch, with IndiGo building its China network methodically rather than attempting a single large-scale expansion.

IndiGo’s network context: the airline operates 400 plus aircraft, runs approximately 2,200 plus daily flights, connects 95 plus domestic and 40 plus international destinations, and welcomed 124 million customers in calendar year 2025. It was named the Best Airline in India and South Asia by Skytrax at the World Airline Awards 2025 and ranked sixth Most Punctual Airline in the Asia-Pacific region in 2025 by aviation analytics firm Cirium.
