Mercedes-Benz India has begun bookings for the all-electric G-Class, known as the G 580 EQ Technology, which is set to make its debut next year. Unlike Mercedes’ usual EQ naming convention, this electric model retains the classic G-Class’s rugged, boxy aesthetics with just minor cosmetic changes.
Under the familiar exterior, the G 580 has an innovative quad-motor all-wheel-drive electric powertrain. With a powerful 579 bhp and 1,164 Nm of torque, it can reach 100 kmph in less than five seconds. Mercedes highlights that this electric version maintains the off-road prowess of its combustion engine counterpart, with similar approach, departure and side slope angles in addition to its unique tank-turn feature.
The G 580’s inside reflects the luxurious design of the conventional G-Class, with twin 12.3-inch digital displays and a cutting-edge voice assistant that can be set with exclusive commands specific to this particular model. A premium Burmester 3D sound system and a rear-seat entertainment package with two 11.6-inch touchscreens are among the optional upgrades that highlight passenger comfort and entertainment.
Mercedes-Benz plans to sell the all-electric G-Class at a premium, with prices expected to surpass Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom) when it launches in India.
