Hyundai Motor India marks 29 years of operations with 12.7 million units sold

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has completed 29 years of operations in India, having been established on May 6, 1996. Over the years, the company has built a strong presence in the Indian automotive market and has sold over 12.7 million units since inception.

HMIL began its operations with the establishment of a manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. This facility became operational in September 1998 and was Hyundai’s first fully integrated car manufacturing plant outside South Korea. It continues to play a key role in Hyundai’s production strategy in India.

Over the decades, Hyundai has introduced several models in the Indian market, including the Santro, Creta, and Ioniq 5. The company has aimed to align its growth with the evolving needs of Indian customers. To meet increasing demand, Hyundai is working towards expanding its annual production capacity to 1 million units. This includes the development of its new manufacturing facility in Talegaon.

Hyundai Motor India also serves as a key export base for Hyundai globally. Since its first shipment, the company has exported over 3.7 million vehicles to more than 150 countries. It has consistently ranked among the top passenger vehicle exporters from India.

In terms of global performance, Hyundai Motor India contributed 18.5% to Hyundai Motor Company’s global sales in calendar year 2024. Its Indian manufacturing operations also incorporate green and smart manufacturing practices.

Through the Hyundai Motor India Foundation, the company has invested INR 400 crore over the last five years in community initiatives. These efforts have supported projects focused on the environment, mobility, and social development, impacting over 2 million people annually. The foundation’s programs have also supported income-generating activities, contributing over INR 40 crore in economic benefits to local communities.
