Shivpal Singh Yadav, who is the younger brother of Mulayam Singh Yadav formed the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) in 2018 after a clash with his nephew and Samajwadi Party current chief Akhilesh Yadav.

However, again during the 2022 assembly elections, both fraction came together and Shivpal Yadav contested from his conventional Jaswantnagar seat in Etawah on SP ticket and got elected to legislative.

However, the rift between the two again intensified and came to the fore during the Presidential election, Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party-Lohia head Shivpal and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party chief Rajbhar voted in favour of NDA Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu.

After which the Samajwadi Party released a letter stating that Shivpal Singh Yadav is free to go anywhere, if they are “getting more respect” in any other party. Akhilesh targeted at his uncle Shivpal Yadav of working on the BJP’s “directions” and circulating false allegations that the opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha had once called SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav an “ISI agent”.
