Sonia Gandhi presided over the CWC meeting virtually because she is abroad for a medical checkup with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Between August 21 and September 20, the party was to elect a new president to replace Sonia Gandhi.

The meeting is taking place in the aftermath of the resignation of senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who slammed Rahul Gandhi and his management style in his resignation letter. While Azad has resigned, G23 leaders Anand Sharma and Mukul Wasnik are made CWC members.

According to Jairam Ramesh, a representative for Congress’s communication, Anyone can nominate themselves to run in the election for the top party position. “We are the only party to have such democratic exercise,” he claimed.

Rahul Gandhi should take the lead and become Congress president, according to senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who made the statement following the meeting on behalf of all Congress workers. He claimed that he would be able to strengthen and unite the Congress party.
