Congress leaders including Shashi Tharoor slams ICHR for discarding Nehru’s picture

The whole plot began on Friday when many senior Congress leaders posted screenshots of the ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ poster on the ICHR website. The poster showcases profile images leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, B R Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Rajendra Prasad, Madan Mohan Malviya and V D Savarkar.

On Saturday, the Congress party castigated the Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR) for discarding former Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru’s image from a digital poster on the ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrating India’s 75th year independence. Meanwhile, the Council, iterated it to be an “unnecessary controversy” and averred that there was no ulterior motive behind its choice of freedom fighters for the poster. ICHR Member Secretary K Ratnam too commented on the similar stance by saying that the Council is not into pitting one icon against another, reported The Indian Express.

Jairam Ramesh, senior member of the Congress party, depicted this act to be “atrocious.” Gaurav Gogoi, the party president termed this as “petty” and “injustice”. He stated that no country removes the first prime minister of the country from its website of freedom struggle. “India will not forget that the RSS chose to stay away from the Indian freedom movement,” INC Deputy senior leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi added.

Endorsing the comments made by INC leader, Shashi Tharoor tweeted, “One more occasion for ICHR to disgrace itself.”

The ICHR Member Secretary Ratnam counter reverted through his statement to The Indian Express, “Just because one icon is not on the poster doesn’t mean we are denying them their legacy. We couldn’t have accommodated everyone.”
