BJP led NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu: 1st tribal woman to make possible history

BJP announced former Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu as the ruling National Democratic Alliance’s presidential candidate who if elected would be the 2nd female President and the 1st tribal woman to hold India’s highest Office.

The BJP announced former Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu as the ruling National Democratic Alliance’s presidential candidate on Tuesday.

“After discussion with all the NDA allies we have decided to name Droupadi Murmu. As the presidential candidate”. BJP president JP Nadda announced to the Media. He further said. “Earlier, Union minister Rajnath Singh and I were discussing with political parties to have a consensus. On the presidential candidate. But it didn’t materialise. Now when the UPA has already announced the candidate in the parliamentary party meeting we also discussed our presidential candidate.”

According to Nadda, around twenty names were discussed and it was decided. Moreover, to have the presidential candidate from the Eastern part of the country. Mrumu, if elected would be the 2nd female President and the 1st tribal woman to hold India’s highest Office. Murmu, 64, with her long career in politics as a two term MLA and minister (between 2000-2004) in the coalition government of the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal-BJP government in the State and her impressive record as being the first governor of Jharkhand to complete the full term (2015-2021) is an impeccable choice for presidential candidature.

Droupadi Murmu: 1st tribal woman in Indian history

With Murmu as its presidential candidate, the party can hope to strengthen its hold among tribal voters. Furthermore, the party is now sure of getting support from the ruling BJD in Odisha. Odisha CM and BJD leader Naveen Patnaik has welcomed Murmu’s candidature indicating support for her.

After the announcement of Mrumu’s name, Prime Minister Narendra Modi put out a social media post extending his best wishes. The post read, “Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, downtrodden as well as the marginalised. She has rich administrative experience and had an outstanding gubernatorial tenure. I am confident she will be a great President of our nation.”

Hence, the presidential elections are set to take place on July 18 and Yashwant Sinha is the opposition’s choice for Presidential candidature.
