Samant Kumar Goel remains RAW Chief, Tapan Kumar Deka mad new IB Director

Samant Kumar Goel’s contract was extended by the Centre on June 24 by another year letting him hold the position of agency secretary through June 30, 2023. While, Tapan Kumar Deka on the other hand was appointed as the next director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

Samant Kumar Goel has retained his post as secretary of the intelligence agency’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) after his contract was extended by the Centre on June 24 by another year.

Now, Samant Kumar Goel will hold the position of agency secretary through June 30, 2023. He succeeded Anil Dhasmana as the Chief of RAW in June 2019. Samant Kumar Goel is an IPS officer from the Punjab cadre class of 1984.

Tapan Kumar Deka was appointed as the next director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Tapan Deka has tracked terrorists and religious extremism as the chief of the Intelligence Bureau’s Operations section.

He is an officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre class of 1988. ho specializes in north-east matters, was assigned to Assam by Home Minister Amit Shah in the wake of the 2019 anti-CAA riots.

To give an Overview about both the entities. RAW is an external intelligence organization that monitors dangers from abroad. While the IB is the national internal intelligence agency that upholds the internal security of the country. Counterintelligence, counterterrorism, VIP Security, anti-secession efforts. And intelligence gathering in border regions are among the Intelligence Bureau’s (IB) primary responsibilities. RAW collects secret information about the activities of neighboring countries.

IB functions under the governance of the Ministry of Home Affairs. While RAW has been placed directly under the Indian Prime Minister’s office. IB gets its employees from the Indian Police Service, law enforcement agencies and the military. While RAW has its own service cadre known as the Research and Analysis Service (RAS).
