
Simone Tata, a Swiss-born woman who came to India as a tourist in the early 1950s, is the stepmother of Ratan Tata. She met and fell in love with Naval Tata, Ratan Tata’s father, and the couple married in 1955. This marked the beginning of her journey in India, which would later see her play a pivotal role in shaping the Tata Group’s business ventures.
Simone Tata became involved in the Tata Group’s beauty brand, Lakme, in 1962, eventually becoming its chairperson in 1982. Under her leadership, Lakme became a globally recognized brand. She later played a key role in the sale of Lakme to Hindustan Unilever, using the proceeds to establish Trent, a retail giant known for brands like Westside and Zudio.
Beyond business, Simone is known for her philanthropic efforts. She is the Chairperson of the Sir Ratan Tata Institute and supports several trusts that work towards the welfare of children, the underprivileged, and the arts.
Simone Tata’s son, Noel Tata, is also a significant figure within the Tata Group, serving as Chairman of Trent. Her grandchildren, Leah, Maya, and Neville Tata, are continuing the family legacy under the mentorship of their uncle, Ratan Tata.
Sadly, Ratan Tata passed away at the age of 86 on October 9, 2024. His death marked the end of an era for the Tata Group and India’s business landscape.
