Hantavirus crisis deepens as Spain confirms evacuation plans for multiple European nations

Spanish authorities have intensified emergency response measures after a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius triggered an international health alert involving multiple European countries.

Spain’s Health Ministry confirmed that Spanish citizens would be among the first passengers allowed to disembark once the vessel reaches the Canary Islands under strict medical supervision. The operation comes after several confirmed and suspected hantavirus infections were linked to the ship, with at least three deaths reported so far.

According to Spanish officials, the body of one passenger who died from the virus will remain onboard while the vessel continues its journey toward the Netherlands following evacuation procedures in Spain. Authorities said the decision was taken as part of ongoing international health and quarantine protocols.

Spanish Interior Ministry officials also stated that passengers from other countries would not be permitted to leave the ship until their respective governments had arranged dedicated evacuation flights. The ministry stressed that coordinated repatriation plans were necessary to prevent confusion and maintain strict containment measures during the health emergency.

Spain confirmed that evacuation flights had already been arranged for passengers from France, Germany, Belgium, Ireland and the Netherlands. Additional coordination with other governments is ongoing as health agencies continue monitoring passengers and crew members for symptoms linked to the virus.

The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius has prompted growing concern across Europe after the World Health Organization confirmed multiple hantavirus cases connected to the vessel. WHO said the outbreak involved the Andes strain of hantavirus, a rare variant capable of limited human-to-human transmission through close contact.

The ship had earlier remained stranded off the coast of Cabo Verde after local authorities denied docking permission due to public health concerns. Spain later agreed to receive the vessel under strict emergency arrangements coordinated with international health agencies.

According to WHO data, the cruise ship carried nearly 150 passengers and crew members from more than 20 countries. Several symptomatic individuals have already been medically evacuated to hospitals in South Africa and Europe, while dozens of passengers who previously disembarked at other locations are now being traced and monitored globally.

Spanish health authorities said quarantine protocols would remain in place for passengers considered high-risk contacts. Officials also stated that medical screening, isolation procedures and contact tracing operations would continue even after passengers returned to their home countries.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has maintained that the overall public health risk to Europe remains low, though authorities continue urging caution due to the rare possibility of person-to-person transmission associated with the Andes strain.
