Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) witnessed a shocking incident on Monday after a cancer patient admitted to the hospital was found dead with his throat slit inside a ward, police officials said.

According to police, the patient was discovered lying on his hospital bed in a pool of blood during the early hours of Monday. A blade was also reportedly found near the body, raising serious questions about the circumstances surrounding the death.

Officials said the deceased had been undergoing treatment at the premier medical institute in Lucknow. Hospital staff informed police after noticing the patient unresponsive and bleeding heavily from the neck area.

Police teams reached the hospital soon after receiving information and began an investigation into the incident. The body was later sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and timing of death.

Authorities have not yet officially confirmed whether the case is being treated as suicide or suspected foul play. Investigators are examining CCTV footage, hospital security arrangements and statements of hospital staff and attendants present in the ward area at the time of the incident.

The incident triggered concern among patients and attendants inside the hospital premises, with questions being raised over security and monitoring inside sensitive medical wards.

SGPGI is one of Uttar Pradesh’s leading super-speciality medical institutions and receives patients from several states for advanced treatment, including cancer care and critical illness management.

Police officials said forensic teams were also called to collect evidence from the scene. Further details regarding the patient’s identity and medical condition have not yet been officially disclosed.

Hospital authorities have not issued a detailed public statement on the incident so far. Officials said the investigation remains underway and further facts are expected to emerge after forensic and post-mortem reports are completed.

The case has drawn significant attention in Lucknow due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the death inside a major government medical institution.
