Game development requires dedication and commitment. If you are creative and passionate enough and you possess the right skills, this might be the industry for you.

Game development is now an emerging career in India. With e-sport and trending gaming apps, an array of opportunities are now on the table. If you are a student, someone willing to restart your career, or just someone who wants to try out game development, it is good to know about what you are getting into.

Game development is hard work. It requires dedication, commitment, and perseverance, which can potentially exhaust you if you are not prepared. But, sacrifices and hard work also reap rewards which could be increasingly satisfying.

Game development is for you if you enjoy artistic and technological pursuits. There are three primary competencies in the field:

Game Level Designers- here, you will work closely with human psychology and the foundations of design

Programmers- here, the focus revolves solely around scripting, coding, mathematics, and science

Artists- here, you will study, understand, and create 3D / 2D art and production

Obviously, these are not the only roles that the discipline is confined to. There are many other opportunities essential to the functionality of the game. You can in fact become an engineer or a lawyer, and pursue a career affiliated in your field of interest, game development.

Courses and universities

Courses in game development primarily focus on skill development required for the field. This includes game level design, UI / UX design, programming, and 2D/3D art.

Universities in India have newly introduced the course in associates, bachelors, and masters degrees. Some of these universities are the National Institute of Design, Asian Institute of design, Bharti Vidyapeeth University, IIFA Multimedia, iPixio Animation College, Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematic (MAAC), and Lovely Professional University.

Career prospects in India and Abroad

While India is new to the industry, it can still be worth to consider pursuing a career in game development given the country’s traditions and rich culture. Other countries include North America, Western Europe, and Japan.

Interns in the field can expect stipends from Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 per month. A full-time package, which is usually for candidates with 3 – 4 years of experience, can go up to 2.4 lakh and 7.6 lakh. Quality in production serves as the benchmark and determines progress in the field.

On 3rd September, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition to cancel the exams of First-year and Second-year students.

One of the most impacted sections of society, due to the pandemic, is the student community.
A few days back the Supreme Court gave its final verdict regarding Final Year examinations of colleges. The verdict given was in favour of conducting examinations and minimizing the negative fallout of the pandemic on the future of Final Year students.
On 3rd September, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition to cancel the exams of First-year and Second-year students. The PIL was filed by Ayush Yesudas.
As per the UGC Guidelines issued on April 27, 2020, “For intermediate semester/year students, the Universities may conduct examinations, after making a comprehensive assessment of their level of preparedness, residential status of the students, status of COVID-19 pandemic spread in different region/state and other factors. In case the situation does not appear to be normal in view of COVID-19, in order to maintain “social distancing”, safety and health of the students, grading of the students could be composite of 50% marks on the basis of the pattern of internal evaluation adopted by the universities and the remaining 50% marks can be awarded on the basis of performance in previous semester only (if available).”

Did UGC Guidelines Orders First and Second Year Students to Take Exams in September 2020 https://t.co/HQAL6ddNdz

— Fact Hunt (@facthunt_in) September 1, 2020

Ayush Yesudas’ petition claimed that conducting exams would be a contradiction to the above-mentioned guidelines and dangerous due to COVID-19.
The Supreme Court dismissed the petition saying, “The University Grants Commission (UGC) has left it to the discretion of the Universities to conduct examinations for the 1st and 2nd-year students. If they want to hold the examination, we can’t stop them. This is not a ground for judicial review.”
