On Sunday, PM Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and other leaders paid tribute to all those who lost their lives during the Partition. August 14 is observed as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ in India.

In his Independence Day speech last year, Prime Minister Modi declared August 14 to be “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.”

On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Prime Minister Modi paid his heartfelt tribute to all those who lost their lives during Partition and admire the resilience and tenacity of all those who suffered through that tragic chapter of our history.

Today, on #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, I pay homage to all those who lost their lives during Partition , and applaud the resilience as well as grit of all those who suffered during that tragic period of our history.

— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 14, 2022

The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, also spoke of the suffering that occurred during the partition, when Pakistan was established and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes.

The cruel chapter of Indian history that will always be remembered as the country’s split in 1947. Millions of people were killed and displaced as a result of the violence and hatred of Partition. The Home Minister via tweet paid his homage to the countless individuals who endured the worst effects of Partition.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid his respects and condolences to those who died during the partition.

Singh took it to Twitter and paid his tributes by remembering all those people who lost their lives during the country’s partition. He honoured all those who began again despite being unable to forget the agony of partition. He mentioned, that the country will never forget the horrors of Partition.

India’s Partition

The Partition is widely regarded as one of history’s most violent and rapid displacements. The partition of India into India and Pakistan resulted in severe bloodshed and communal violence, property loss, and significant instability.

Estimates of the number of people killed range from 500,000 to over a million, according to the official document, but “the generally accepted figure stands at around 500,000,” according to the official document issued by the centre.

Today’s Google Doodle, illustrated by Kolkata-based guest artist Sayan Mukherjee, beautifully expressed in its true instinct the feeling India’s Independence struggle and its cultural traditions carried forward through centuries.

Independence Day 2021: India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence, today and Google has contributed to this day with a special doodle. On August 15, 1947, India became free from the shackles of colonial rule and emerged as a sovereign nation.

Today’s Google Doodle illustrates the diverse range of traditional forms of dance. From the classical Bharatnatyam positioned on the utmost left to the ancient 3000 years Indian dance style depicted with its origin from the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The pictorial representation includes masked reenactments adopted from epics like Chhau dance originated from the eastern state of Bengal, the Purulia Chau, and the Seraikella Chau regions, as per Google.

Today’s Google Doodle, illustrated by Kolkata-based guest artist Sayan Mukherjee, beautifully expressed in its true instinct the feeling India’s Independence struggle and its cultural traditions carried forward through centuries.

For those who are unaware of the doodle concept. The Google Doodle dates back to 2003, wherein it replaced its ‘O’ by the Ashok Chakra and the Indian National flag waving in an animated pattern among with the letter ‘L’.

The doodle featured illustration included variegated iconic Indian folk instruments: the tutari, shehnai, dhol, veena, sarangi and bansuri. “From the versatile double-reeded shehnai to the resonant stringed sarangi, these instruments are but a few that makeup India’s rich musical legacy, which dates back over 6,000 years…The musical diversity represented by this unique collection reflects the patchwork of Indian cultures that is celebrated across the nation today,” the company had stated while proclaiming the news.

Today Google Doodle celebrates the high spirit of Sarla Thukral, the first Indian woman to pilot an aircraft, to mark her 107th birth anniversary. Being the first Indian pilot in India, Thukral inspired many women to adopt flying as a career for several years. Here’s a brisk life history of her life.

In 1914, during the colonial period, Sarla Thukral was born in Delhi and later shifted to Lahore, presently known as Pakistan. Interestingly, she wasn’t the only pilot in her family- her spouse, an airmail pilot, came from a family of fliers too. After achieving her license in 1936, she took her first flight and presented a momentous accomplishment that left many inspired over generations.

“At age 21, dressed in a traditional sari, she stepped into the cockpit of a small double-winged plane for her first solo flight. Lifting the craft into the sky, she made history in the process,” Google averred. Nevertheless, achieving so much at a tender age is not an easy task, Thukral had to cover 1000 hours of flight training at the Lahore Flying Club.

Thukral desired to become a commercial pilot, but with the advent of World War II, her plans were terminated. After which she decided to pursue fine arts and painting at the Mayo School of Arts in Lahore, later coming back to Delhi, she studied the art of jewellery designing and clothes to earn daily bread.

Guest artist Vrinda Zaveri created the Google Doodle. Google said that it had initially planned to publish the Doodle last year, on her 106th birth anniversary. However, due to the misfortunate incident of the Air India international plane crash (killing 21 persons and both pilots) in Kerala on August 7, 2020, Google decided to withhold the doodle for that year. “Though we don’t usually run Doodles more than once, Thukral left such a lasting legacy for women in aviation that we decided to run the Doodle this year in honour of her 107th birthday,” the company added.

Speaking on the condolence motion in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray paid his respects to the former President Pranab Mukherjee on the first day of the state legislature's monsoon session.

Speaking on the condolence motion in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray paid his respects to the former President Pranab Mukherjee on the first day of the state legislature’s monsoon session, according to reports from PTI.

Thackeray recollected the first time he met Mukherjee wherein the latter had visited his home ‘Matoshree’ with NCP chief Sharad Pawar as part of his campaign for the presidential polls.

“I realised he was a sensitive human being who treated others with respect. This is a rare quality,” he said.

He also recalls the time when he was asked to meet Mukherjee on his visit to Mumbai after becoming the President. “I went to the Raj Bhavan with Aaditya (Thackeray’s son) and Mukherjee told me he never thought he would be the president. ‘But the Shiv Sena openly supported my candidature and facilitated my win. Unfortunately, Balasaheb Thackeray is not with us now and my tenure is ending’,” the chief minister said recalling Mukherjee’s words.
The chief minister also paid tribute to former chief minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar, and former legislature members Anil Rathod, Chandrakanta Goyal among others, who died recently.
“The previous Sena-BJP alliance owed a lot to the Goyal family since several meetings would be held at her (Chandrakanta Goyal’s) residence. I remember Chandrakanta Tai and Ved Prakashji,” Thackeray said referring to Ved Prakash Goyal, who was the BJP’s treasurer for a long time.

While speaking on the condolence motion, opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis described him as an excellent parliamentarian and statesman. He also paid tributes to former chief minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar.
