Daily commuters across Delhi are expected to face major transportation disruptions from Thursday as auto-rickshaw and taxi unions launched a strike demanding government intervention on fare revision, fuel costs, app-based aggregator policies and pending transport-related issues.

The strike, called by multiple transport unions representing auto-rickshaw drivers, black-and-yellow taxis and sections of app-based cab operators, began early in the morning and is likely to impact local travel across key parts of the national capital. Railway stations, metro stations, bus terminals, airport routes and commercial hubs are expected to witness increased pressure due to reduced availability of last-mile transport services.

Union leaders have claimed that rising fuel prices, increasing operational expenses and commission structures imposed by ride-hailing platforms have severely affected drivers’ earnings. Protesters are also reportedly demanding updated fare structures, welfare protections and stricter regulation of app-based transport aggregators operating in the city.

Several commuters reported longer waiting times and surge pricing on app-based taxi services as the strike began affecting vehicle availability. Areas around New Delhi Railway Station, Indira Gandhi International Airport and major metro corridors witnessed increased commuter movement during peak hours.

Authorities have advised citizens to use alternative transportation options, including the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation network and DTC buses, which are expected to experience unusually high passenger traffic throughout the day. Traffic police and transport officials have also been deployed at major transit points to manage congestion and commuter flow.

The protest comes amid continuing tensions between transport operators and authorities over licensing regulations, permit issues and the growing dominance of digital ride-booking platforms in urban transportation. Similar transport strikes in Delhi in previous years had led to widespread commuter inconvenience and disruptions across business districts and educational institutions.

Transport sector representatives warned that if their demands are not addressed soon, the agitation could intensify further in the coming days. However, government officials said discussions with unions may continue in an attempt to resolve the dispute and restore normal services.

Delhi, one of India’s busiest urban transport networks, depends heavily on auto-rickshaws and taxis for daily last-mile connectivity. Any large-scale disruption in these services significantly impacts office-goers, students, airport passengers and intercity travelers.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely as commuters adjust to alternate travel arrangements amid the ongoing strike action.
