A massive explosion tore through a train carrying Pakistani soldiers and civilians in Quetta on Sunday after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into one of the train’s carriages near Chaman Phatak railway station, killing at least 24 people and injuring dozens in one of the deadliest attacks in Pakistan’s Balochistan province in recent months.

The blast occurred near the railway track area close to Chaman Phatak in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s restive southwestern province of Balochistan. According to police and rescue officials, the train carrying military personnel suffered partial damage while several nearby vehicles and buildings were also hit by the impact of the explosion.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a huge explosion followed by scenes of panic as thick black smoke rose above the railway station area. Multiple train coaches were damaged while shattered glass, twisted metal and debris were scattered across nearby roads. Geo News reported that windows and glass panels of nearby buildings were blown out due to the intensity of the blast.

Security officials confirmed that army personnel travelling on the train were among those killed. Civilians near the railway crossing were also caught in the explosion. Rescue workers rushed injured victims to hospitals across Quetta, where an emergency was declared immediately after the incident. Doctors, paramedics and additional medical staff were called in to handle the large number of casualties.

Officials said more than 20 people sustained injuries, several of them critically. Videos circulating on social media showed damaged train compartments, overturned vehicles and rescue teams searching through wreckage as sirens echoed across the city. Some reports suggested passengers remained trapped inside damaged coaches shortly after the explosion.

Following the blast, railway authorities halted the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express at Quetta Railway Station as a precautionary measure. Security forces sealed off the area while bomb disposal squads and forensic teams began collecting evidence from the blast site.

Babar Yousafzai, spokesperson to the Home Minister, said all relevant institutions had been placed on high alert after the explosion. He urged residents not to gather near the blast area so rescue operations could continue without obstruction.

Meanwhile, the banned separatist militant outfit Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack targeting the train carrying military personnel. In a statement released shortly after the explosion, BLA spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch said the group had targeted a train transporting personnel of the “occupying forces” from Quetta Cantt in what he described as a “highly organized fidayee attack.”

“The Baloch Liberation Army accepts full responsibility for this operation,” the statement said. The militant group also announced that it would soon release additional details regarding the operation and the human casualties caused by the attack.

The BLA has previously carried out attacks targeting Pakistani security forces, railway infrastructure and government installations in Balochistan. The latest explosion once again highlights the deteriorating security situation in the province, where separatist violence and insurgent attacks have intensified in recent years.
