As a result of news that telecom tycoon Sunil Mittal is considering a stake in the company, shares of One97...

As a result of news that telecom tycoon Sunil Mittal is considering a stake in the company, shares of One97 Communications, which owns Paytm, increased 5% to Rs 655.30 in intraday trading on the BSE on Monday.

In an otherwise sluggish market, the shares of the fintech company has increased 8% during the last two trading days. Paytm was trading 3 percent higher at Rs 642 at 09:28 a.m., while the S&P BSE Sensex was down 0.22 percent. In the first 13 minutes of trading, about 3.2 million equity shares were exchanged on the counter on the NSE and BSE.

According to a Bloomberg story, Indian telecom mogul Sunil Mittal wants to acquire a share in Paytm by combining his financial services business with the payments bank of the fintech behemoth.

According to the report, Mittal wants to merge Airtel Payments Bank and Paytm Payments Bank through a stock transaction and also wants to purchase Paytm shares from other shareholders. Airtel and Paytm may not achieve an agreement at this early stage of negotiations, the report said. Another Bloomberg article, citing people familiar with the situation, claimed that Ant Group Co. is considering selling part of its shares in the company that runs the Indian financial technology company Paytm in order to retain its position within the required range.

One 97 Communications Ltd.’s share % climbed passively as a result of share buybacks, thus the Chinese fintech behemoth has been debating how to cut its holding, according to Bloomberg. Paytm repurchased shares earlier this month for a total value of Rs 849.83 crore, at an average price of Rs 545.93 per share. In accordance with a regulatory filing, the corporation repurchased 15.57 million shares for a price ranging between Rs 702.65 and Rs 480.25 per share.

Due to superior financial results in the October-December quarter, Paytm has outpaced the market in the past month by increasing by 25%. (Q3FY23). In contrast, the S&P BSE Sensex only slightly increased throughout that time, by 0.11 percent. Nevertheless, compared to the benchmark index’s 5% decline during the previous three months, it has increased by nearly 50%.

Paytm’s Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation), a measure of operating profit, increased to Rs 31 crore in Q3FY23 before ESOP cost margin. According to the company, revenue growth across all businesses, strict cost control, and operating leverage helped it achieve operating Ebitda profitability three quarters earlier than anticipated.

Mittal wants to merge Airtel Payments Bank and Paytm Payments Bank in a stock transaction, and he also wants to purchase Paytm shares from other shareholders.

According to sources close to the situation, Indian business magnate Sunil Mittal is interested in acquiring a stake in Paytm by integrating his financial services business with the fintech giant’s payments bank.

Mittal wants to merge Airtel Payments Bank and Paytm Payments Bank in a stock transaction, and he also wants to purchase Paytm shares from other holders, according to people who asked not to be identified because they were sharing private information. The talks are still in their early stages, and Airtel and Paytm may not reach an agreement, according to the sources.

Paytm shares, formerly known as One 97 Communications Ltd., have recovered around 40% from their November record low as the company shows signs of becoming profitable.According to an exchange filing this month, the business cut its third-quarter deficit after a client acquisition push increased revenue.

“We remain fully focused on our strong organic growth journey and are not involved in any such discussions,” a representative for Paytm said in an email statement. A spokesman for Bharti Enterprises Ltd., controlled by Mittal, declined to comment.

Paytm, formerly India’s most valuable company, has never traded above its IPO price of 2,150 rupees since its offering in November 2021 and has seen the worst first-year share drop among significant IPOs over the previous decade. SoftBank Group Corp. of Japan and Ant Group Co. of China are among the company’s supporters.

According to exchange records, Mittal’s six-year-old payments bank had 129 million members and had been profitable in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022.

Paytm is expanding its product offering in order to attract more users and persuade investors of its revenue potential. According to Bloomberg statistics, eight brokerages have either a buy or overweight rating on One 97 Communications, with a consensus 12-month price objective of 944.64 rupees.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended a 39% reduction in spectrum fees including the 5G network.

On Thursday, April 21, telecom operator Bharti Airtel urged the government to keep the spectrum fees low on the 5G network. It stated that launching a next-gen network is more beneficial than the collection of revenue.

Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Sunil Bharti Mittal said at a conclave that “5G is important and that’s why we keep on requesting the government to make the 5G as an enabler for hundreds of things that we develop in the country, to keep the spectrum at affordable pricing, to not load the industry too much.”

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended a 39% reduction in spectrum fees including the 5G network.

Mittal further stated to focus on the rollout of the network instead of acquiring the spectrum. “I will say the multiplier impact that a faster, high-speed, low-latency network can have for a country is many times more than what can be achieved by picking up some money upfront,” said the chairman.

Recently TRAI reported the number of fixed-line service providers for February 2022, in which Bharti Airtel had recorded 57.66 lakh subscribers.

Amazon’s billionaire founder Jeff Bezos has invested $10 billion to satellite subsidiary Kuiper Systems LLC, which intends to launch 3,236 satellites into low-earth orbit to give broadband internet access.

Amazon.com Inc. struck a settlement to use Verizon Communications Inc.’s network to connect its thousands-strong planned fleet of satellites, climbing up a competition with Elon Musk’s StarLink system. Amazon’s billionaire founder Jeff Bezos has invested $10 billion to satellite subsidiary Kuiper Systems LLC, which intends to launch 3,236 satellites into low-earth orbit to give broadband internet access.

Amazon will now search ways this so-called “constellation” of spacecraft could connect up to Verizon’s terrestrial telecommunications network and connect remote areas and businesses, the companies said in a statement Tuesday.

The deal will intensify the new space heat fired by billionaire investment. Bezos, the world’s second-richest man, is colliding with the world’s richest, Elon Musk, whose Space Exploration Technologies Corp. has launched above 1,500 low-earth orbit satellites into space and clashes with Bezos’s Blue Origin on launch technology.

Musk lately taunted Bezos after his enormous wealth exceeded that of the Amazon founder. He’s now worth more than a quarter of a trillion dollars, compared to Bezos’s $193 billion. Kuiper Systems in September filed a harsh criticism with the Federal Communications Commission, challenging Musk and his companies of ridiculing ordinances with a general attitude that “rules are for other people.”

The effort to provide low-earth-orbit satellite broadband draws in other investors, including more billionaires and governments. Investments like OneWeb, supported by Indian telecommunications tycoon Sunil Mittal and the U.K. government, recently struck a contract with AT&T Inc. to hook up customers via enduring land-based networks.

Amazon and Verizon will examine technical and commercial models for new services and increase Verizon’s network using Kuiper’s satellite broadband. Verizon and Amazon have previously collaborated on other communications technology, such as edge computing.

A spokesperson for Verizon said it’s a global partnership with Amazon, and it’s open to examining similar deals with other companies. Still, he declined to comment on the investments of the agreement.

The government granted the choice of dues moratorium to telcos as part of a recently-announced relief package for the telecom sector.

Bharti Airtel has notified the government that it will choose the four-year moratorium on AGR and spectrum dues after Vodafone Idea, news agency PTI reported. Vodafone Idea had earlier said its board has chosen the AGR payment moratorium from October 2021 to September 2025. The initial telco to receive the portion under the Department of Telecom’s recently begun telecom relief package.

On Monday, Airtel stock dropped 0.53% to close at ₹690.80 on NSE. Last month, Airtel Chairman Sunil Mittal said the company would opt for a payment moratorium and redirect the cash flow to build networks aggressively. The government granted the choice of dues moratorium to telcos as part of a recently-announced relief package for the telecom sector.

However, the telecom firms will have to pay interest during the moratorium period. Also, the government will have a choice to transform the due amount about the deferred payment into equity at the end of the moratorium/deferment period.

The measures, directed at granting relaxation to companies such as Vodafone Idea that have to pay thousands of crores in unprovisioned past statutory dues, also involve the scrapping of Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) for airwaves received in future spectrum auctions. The PTI report said that Airtel told the government that it would take the four-year moratorium on AGR and spectrum dues “with the option of prepaying as per NIA (notice inviting application) norms.

In line with the changes revealed for the telecom sector, the government lately addressed to telcos, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio, urging them to communicate by October 29 if they would be opting for the four-year dues moratorium.
The elimination of inter-operator IUC charges may result in certain EBITDA(Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) gains for Vodafone Idea and...

The elimination of inter-operator IUC charges may result in certain EBITDA(Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) gains for Vodafone Idea and some impact for Jio, while it will be neutral for Airtel, according to a report. The zero IUC (Interconnect Usage Charges) regime was previously slated to come into effect from January 2020, but then the telecom regulator deferred its implementation till January 1, 2021.

IUC is a charge that is paid by a telco to another operator when its customers make voice calls to subscribers of the rival network, and these charges stood at 6 paise per minute.

Reliance Jio announced that calls by its users to other networks in India will become free from Friday, as the IUC regime ends.

“While telcos per se do not give a mix of on-net and off-net calls leave alone the incoming/outgoing bifurcation, TRAI’s data from year ago indicated that share of off-net incoming calls was increasing for Jio (and as a corollary outgoing calls decreasing) as it gained scale,” Credit Suisse said in its note.

However, since then Jio has capped off-net outgoing calls and also gained subscriber market share while Vodafone Idea (VIL) has lost market share.

Consequently, Jio has now become a net receiver of IUC and VIL a net payer, it said adding that for Bharti Airtel the mix is roughly balanced now.

“Consequently, elimination of IUC should result in some EBITDA (Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) gains for VIL and some impact for Jio. Whereas, it will be neutral for Airtel,” the note added.

With Jio’s announcement of making off-net calls (outgoing calls to other networks) free, Credit Suisse said it expects the company to do away with caps on outgoing off-net calls for all in one plans without changing the tariffs. Jio’s IUC top ups would also become redundant and are expected to be discontinued, it said.

“This would make Jio’s tariffs comparable to Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (VIL) whose plans do not have caps on outgoing off-net calls. We believe that all-in one plans are the most popular for Jio, and thus see limited impact of the announcement on Jio as it would not change the pricing of plans for consumers,” it said.
