tvN’s hit series Signal has been confirmed for renewal.

Kim Eu Hee and B.A. Entertainment CEO Jang Won Seok were among the attendees at an event held at La Sapienca University in Rome where they discussed Korean content along with other writers, actors, and producers.

During the event, which was being held on March 13, director Jang Won Seok officially made the announcement that they have collaborated with writer Kim Eu Hee for the season 2 of Signal.

Previously it was reported that the writer-producer pair, who has worked together on SBS drama Revenant in 2023, are also planning to work on new project together.

The series, Signal, first aired in 2016 revolved around a group of police detective who uses mysterious radio that can broadcast from the past to solve cold cases.

Signal scales up its group video call limit to 40 persons

Signal, the encrypted messaging service now supports 40 person group video call. A year ago, Signal released end-to-end encrypted group calls and now, the messaging platform has scaled up the limit to 40 participates through open-source ‘Signal Calling Service’.

What is an open-source Signal Calling Service?

Open-source software is the software that permits anyone to freely use, study and change the software in any way. The source code is openly shared so that people can voluntarily improve the design of the software. The open-source signal calling service provides crystal clear voice and video call quality to help people connect across the world.

The app launched three architectures for the video calls: Full Mesh, Server Mixing and Selective Forwarding. The Full Mesh allows call participants to directly send media (audio and video) directly to other call participants. However, this works on small calls.

Server Mixing allows call participants to send its media to other call participants via a server. Lastly, Selective Forwarding allows each participant to send its media to the server, which further ‘forwards’ the media without altering or viewing it and sends it to other call participants.

Its competitor, WhatsApp allows encrypted group video calls since 2018. However, the limit is only up to 8 participants.

Amid WhatsApp’s privacy policy criticism, ‘Signal’ to roll out new features

Messaging app ‘Signal’, on Tuesday, announced that it will introduce a range of new features in its app in India over the next few days. Signal also provided a sneak peek of some of the features that would be included in the platform.

New features include chat wallpapers and animated stickers and an ‘about’ field for users’ Signal profile. For iOS users, Signal will add new media auto-download settings and full-screen profile photos to match the Android version.

The messaging app has also raised the group call limit on the platform from five to eight.

Signal has gained significant popularity over the last week, witnessing a surge in new downloads following endorsement from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who while replying to a Twitter user’s suggestion to invest in Signal said, “Already donated to Signal a year ago. Will donate more.” This came in amid concerns related to WhatsApp’s new privacy policy update.

The app had topped the list of free apps on Apple’s App Store charts in India, Austria, France, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, and Switzerland last week.

Signal Messenger, a similar app like WhatsApp, was founded in 2018. The app aims to provide its users with an encrypted messaging app. The application is open source, and in fact, WhatsApp currently uses Signal’s end-to-end encryption protocol.

Telegram founder criticizes WhatsApp over newly updated privacy policy

Telegram, an instant messaging app similar to WhatsApp, has gained traction since WhatsApp updated its terms of service on 6th January 2021.

The founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov capitalized on the chaos of the change of WhatsApp’s terms of service, saying that the company doesn’t respect its users. In a blog post, he said, “I hear Facebook has an entire department devoted to figuring out why Telegram is so popular. Imagine dozens of employees working on just that full time. I am happy to save Facebook tens of millions of dollars and give away our secret for free: respect your users.”

He added that Telegram has around 500 million users which has “become a major problem” for Facebook. He criticized WhatsApp of “covert-marketing” and said that there are bots spreading misinformation about Telegram on social media platforms.

According to data from Sensor Tower, between 6th and 7th January 2021, Telegram and Signal received 5,60,000 and 8,400 downloads respectively (on both Android and iOS). WhatsApp, on the other hand, generated 7,68,000 downloads over the two days. In a tweet, Signal mentioned that it has topped the charts on Google Play since the ban.

The new terms of service that has wrecked data havoc state that WhatsApp will be sharing user data with Facebook and businesses that use WhatsApp Business features. This was originally disclosed in October 2020 but implemented now as the features are rolling out.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and now declared the richest man in the world, was one of the first to ask users to switch to Signal after WhatsApp’s update. His tweet was retweeted by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Edward Snowden as well. Users have migrated from one platform to the other, in search of stronger and stricter protection of data. WhatsApp’s competitor Signal’s servers crashed temporarily due to the switch.

It is important to note that this is not the first time WhatsApp has had privacy concerns. The difference now is that they aren’t fighting the blatant collection of data as encryption is uncertain and third parties or hackers can access messages. The issue is this data being shared with Facebook, its parent company. The company clarified that the update to its privacy policy will not change its data sharing principles.

WhatsApp users will be required to accept the updated privacy policy and terms of service by 8th February 2021, in order to continue using the app.

The company said, “We updated the privacy policy to describe that going forward businesses can choose to receive secure hosting services from our parent company Facebook to help manage their communications with their customers on WhatsApp. Though of course, it remains up to the user whether or not they want to message with a business on WhatsApp. The update does not change WhatsApp’s data-sharing practices with Facebook and does not impact how people communicate privately with friends or family wherever they are in the world.”

Data collection and privacy through social media has been a controversial debate with companies aiming to collect data and information about people and gaining more users. The ethics of social media are blurred and are growing slimmer as people get more engaged and obsessed.
