On the most recent episode of Shark Tank India 3, the sharks were startled when they discovered parallels between the pitcher and Shah Rukh Khan’s role in Swades. Ronnie Screwvala, who joined the panel this season, described how he created the film, which was hailed as ‘ahead of its time.’

Anish’s firm, Without, is revolutionising recycling by producing sunglasses and other goods made entirely of recycled plastic. Based in Pune, this unique firm was the first in the world to produce eyewear out of chip packets. The entrepreneur claimed that despite having a well-paying job abroad, he felt something was missing. He left his work in New York and returned to India to make a difference and make better use of his privilege.

Anupam Mittal said, “Why do I feel I am watching the extended version of Swades?” He also said that Ronnie Screwala produced the film. Ronnie added, “At the time it was released, it was called ‘before its time.’ Now I think its time has come.”

The founder pitched his products and requested Rs 75 lakh in exchange for 1% equity. While Aman Gupta suggested Rs 30 lakhs for 1% equity and Rs 45 lakhs in debt with a two-year interest rate of 10%, Ronnie Screwvala offered Rs 75 lakhs for 3% equity, and Peyush Bansal joined Ronnie’s plan. The founder decided to accept Ronnie and Peyush’s offer.

The most recent season introduces six new sharks. The producers revealed the same on X, writing, “In this new season, the stakes are higher, with 12 SHARKS in the TANK! With a journey of three decades, Ronnie also visited his eight failures and two successes, and shared, “If I hadn’t had the eight failures, my two successes may not have been as big as I wanted them to be…” In the video, Ronnie also shares all the work he does in the educational arena, and how living in a joint family has helped him to work collaboratively with people.

Ronnie co-founded UpGrad with three other people in 2015. Aside from this, he co-founded the Swades Foundation in 2013 and has worked relentlessly to improve rural India.

Ronnie Screwvala-led upGrad CEO Arjun Mohan steps down

Arjun Mohan, the CEO of Ronnie Screwvala-led higher edtech platform upGrad, has left the unicorn to explore other possibilities as the firm transitions its leadership structure to focus more on profitability.

upGrad will not replace Mohan, and Mayank Kumar, co-founder and managing director of upGrad, will take on Mohan’s responsibilities. According to the source, upGrad has adopted a ‘business unit structure,’ with leaders reporting to Mohan and in charge of the profit and loss records of numerous such units.

Mohan confirmed the progression of his leaving. His last day of employment will be January 15. Questions addressed to upGrad went unanswered.

“I’m thankful to upGrad leadership, especially Ronnie, Mayank & Phalgun to have trusted me with this responsibility and given an opportunity to lead the team during the high growth phase of COVID and post-Covid. And I’m proud of the team we have built at upGrad and am confident that I’m leaving the organization in able hands for its next phase of growth and profitability,” Mohan said in the statement.

Taapsee Pannu’s Rashmi Rocket ready to hit OTT

With theaters opening at a very slow pace, many makers are taking the OTT route to release their films. The latest one to step this path appears to be Taapsee Pannu-starrer Rashmi Rocket. Though nothing is confirmed, reports have indicated that the makers are in advanced talks with multiple big streaming, and an announcement can be expected soon. The movie has been produced by Ronnie Screwvala.

According to reports from Pinkvilla, the film will release on Zee 5 and has been sold at a whopping Rs 58 crore. Pinkvilla also reported that the makers are aiming for a Dussehra release of the film.

Not much is known about the project, but it is said to portray the journey of an athlete. Pannu had discussed multiple times on social media how she underwent harsh training for this movie. The sports drama has been directed by Akarsh Khurana and written by Nanda Periyasamy, Aniruddha Guha, and Kanika Dhillon. Priyanshu Painyuli and Aparshakti Khurana co-star in this film. The actress wrapped up shooting for the film earlier this year in Gujarat. She had even taken to social media to announce the same.

Thappad actress is busy, as she has many releases in the pipeline. Her rom-com Haseen Dilruba, co-starring Vikrant Massey, premiered on Netflix on July 2. She is currently shooting for her production debut titled ‘Blurr’ which will be directed by Ajay Bahlof Section 375 fame. UpGrad raises $185 million from Temasek, IFC; Enters unicorn club

On Monday, Bengaluru-based online higher education company, UpGrad, has achieved unicorn status after its announced that it closed an amount of $185 million in total in a new funding round that valued it at $1.2 billion.

The startup raised fresh funds from Singapore’s Temasek, World Bank’s sister organization IFC (International Finance Corporation) and IIFL (India Infoline).

UpGrad’s co-founder and chairperson, Ronnie Screwvala, said in a statement, “We are very focused on our path to being in the top three-five companies globally in edtech and serving the one billion workforces across the age group of 18-60. We are pleased with the investor interest ever since we opened up for a fundraiser, and had our maiden raise from Temasek, followed by IFC and IIFL in the last 60 days.”

The CEO, who has produced blockbuster Bollywood films in the past, continued saying that the company would announce further updates on M&A (mergers and acquisitions) and unlock the value they unfold. He said that they were “not a fan of the tag name unicorn” and for them, it was only a path to a much larger goal. In the year 2013, Screwvala had sold his film production giant to Disney at an enterprise valuation of $1.4 billion.

According to estimates by the industry, a total of 53 unicorns are present in India with a tentative valuation of ₹1.4 lakh crore.

Kakuda is a horror-comedy produced by Ronnie Screwvala. It also marks the Hindi-directorial debut of the filmmaker Aditya Sarpotdar who is known for his Marathi movies like Classmates, Mauli, and Faster Fene.

According to PTI, the producer announced the film and said, “With a clear focus on homegrown ideas and development, I am excited to announce our horror-comedy ‘Kakuda’. With a solid script, an extremely talented cast, and a driven director, we hope to push the boundary within the genre.”

Whereas Sonakshi said, “Considering the current situation, a fun comedy film is truly the need of the hour. I loved the script of ”Kakuda” from the moment I read it. It’s the kind of movie I would enjoy watching as an audience.”

The film has been written by Avinash Dwivedi and Chirag Garg and will be released digitally in 2022.

Tapsee Pannu’s Rashmi Rocket may release on Amazon Prime Video

Taapsee Pannu will have a new film released almost a year and a half later. Her next murder-mystery thriller, Haseen Dillruba, which also stars Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane, is set to premiere on Netflix on July 2nd. The actress plays a lady who becomes involved in the death of her own husband in the Vinil Mathew-directed film, which explores the numerous aspects of human relationships. While the Aanand L Rai production has yet to be seen on the web, it is heard that Taapsee’s next film will be released digitally rather than theatrically.

According to industry sources, Taapsee Pannu’s sports drama Rashmi Rocket is the latest to take the OTT path and will be released straight on Amazon Prime Video. After months of negotiations, producers Ronnie Screwvala, Neha Anand, and Pranjal Khandhdiya have agreed to a contract with Amazon Prime. They are said to have negotiated a big agreement and plan to premiere the picture in September. The Akarsh Khurana-directed picture is Ronnie’s second OTT release of the year, after Shobhita Dhulipala’s Sitara, which was just sold to Netflix for a direct-to-web release.

Rashmi Rocket, a sports drama set in Gujarat, will star Taapsee as a sprinter who aspires to win international athletic competitions. The Thappad actress underwent hard physical training to appear credible as a fast runner in the film, which was primarily shot in the Rann of Kutch desert. The film, which also stars Priyanshu Painyuli, Abhishek Banerjee, and Supriya Pathak, is now under post-production and will have its global premiere in the near future.

Rashmi Rocket is the fifth Hindi acquisition made by Amazon Prime India in the previous three months. This year, amid the second wave of the coronavirus, the international streaming giant has led the acquisition game, having purchased the direct-to-streaming rights to Akshay Kumar’s espionage thriller Bell Bottom, Farhan Akhtar’s Toofaan, Vidya Balan’s Sherni (premiering on June 18th), and Emraan Hashmi’s supernatural horror thriller, Ezra.

Vicky too will be a part of this training, and their training is expected to go on for at least three months. He will be trained in archery, sword-fighting, and spear-fighting as well.

Labeled as a superhero action film set in the modern world, it is being planned as a trilogy. The trilogy has its roots in the Mahabharata and will see Vicky Kaushal in a mythological character of Ashwatthama, the son of Guru Dronacharya, who was given the gift of immortality.

Reliance acquires 15% stakes in online lingerie store Zivame

Reliance Industries, in an exchanged filing, has acquired minority stake in Actoserba Active Wholesale, which owns and operates online lingerie store Zivame.

Disclosing a list of related party transactions on the BSE, Reliance has mentioned Actoserba Active Wholesale as an associate company. RIL has listed as many as 38 firms as associate company. According to markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Reliance brands in july reported that they have acquired the stake of Ronnie Screwvala-owned Unilazer Ventures in Zivame. According to Screwvala, his company had sold its entire 15 per cent stake in Zivame to Reliance Brands.

Actoserba Active Wholesale also known as Zivame was founded by former SAP executive Richa Kar and it is an unlisted private company which operates an online lingerie store for women. The company was established in the year 2011 in Bangalore. The startup has also ventured into other segments such as activewear, sleepwear and shapewear. According to Zivame’s website, it has 30-plus retail stores and a presence in more than 800 partner stores across the country.

As of March 2019, The company reported net loss of Rs 19.5 crore and Rs 32 crore in the previous financial year, while it disclosed a revenue of Rs 140 crore.

Company last raised funds in a $2.7 million round from returning investors Zodius Capital and Avendus Capital in September 2019. It has raised over $87 million in a mix of debt and equity funding across multiple rounds so far, as per VCCEdge data.

An associate company is one in which another company owns stake in excess of 15 per cent.

Actors Mrunal Thakur, Soni Razdan, and Priyanshu Painyuli have joined the Ishaan Khatter led war drama ‘Pippa’. The film is based on the book ‘The Burning Chaffees’ by war veteran Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta. It will be directed by Raja Menon and will be released in theatres next year.

Ishaan plays Brigadier Mehta, a veteran of the 45th Cavalry Tank Squadron who battled on the eastern front during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war (Read more about it here). Mrunal and Priyanshu will undertake the roles of Ishaan’s siblings and Soni will be their mother in the film.

Director Raja said in a statement, “With Mrunal and Priyanshu joining Ishaan, we have three of the most exciting young actors coming together. Personally, I’m very excited to work with such extraordinary young talent and look forward to the energy they bring to Pippa.”

The film will be produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP and Siddharth Roy Kapur’s Roy Kapur Films. Raja has previously directed Akshay Kumar-starrer Airlift. Mrunal was seen in Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30 and Priyanshu featured in Randeep Hooda–Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction.

Siddharth also said, “We were looking for great actors who would complement each other to create a believable family unit, and with Mrunal, Priyanshu and Ms. Razdan on board to join Ishaan, I am happy that we have more than achieved what we set out to do with the casting.”

Ronnie added, “Pippa is a story that chronicles an Indian victory in 1971 through the eyes of the Mehta family, and signing on fine actors to essay the members of this brave family was our foremost priority. I’m glad we have talented actors like Mrunal and Priyanshu on board, who along with Ishaan will spearhead this story of triumph that needs to be told.”

London Indian Film Festival is one of the most looked upon gathering to celebrate cinema in Europe. The two films to be screened at prestigious London Indian Film Festival (LIFF) and Birmingham Indian Film Festival (BIFF) this year are Nawazuddin Siddiqui‘s ‘Roam Rome Mein‘ and Vidya Balan’s short film-‘Natkhat’. Roam Rome Mein is a directorial debut by Tannishtha Chatterjee whereas Natkhat is produced by Ronnie Screwvala.

As per a report by Bollywood Hungama, film Roam Rome Mein is about a brother who travels to Rome in search of his sister who had been moved out to seek her freedom from her conservative father. The film smoothly puts up the patriarchal context of the society as whole. On a similar note, Vidya Balan starring short film-Natkhat also addresses obstinate yet sensitive topics like domestic violence, prevailing patriarchy, gender inequality, rape culture. The film is directorial debut of Shaan Vyas and is written by Annukampa Harsh whereas produced by Sanaya Irani Zohrabi.

Sobhita Dhulipala and Rajeev Siddhartha’s film ‘Sitara’ to be released digitally

Sobhita Dhulipala and actor Rajeev Siddhartha to be starred in an upcoming digital movie named ‘Sitara’ which is to be directed by Vandana Kataria. The actors took it to their social media handles to announce the film sharing a cute picture together, which will resume shooting in the month of November. The film had completed its brief schedule in Mumbai before the lockdown and shall be produced under the banner of RSVP movies, produced by Ronnie Screwvala, to be released digitally.

On Friday, Kangana Ranaut dropped her first look from her upcoming movie ‘Tejas’. The actress looked bold and fearless in the poster, the film is about the about the brave Indian Air Force and there dedication towards the country.

She tweeted from her official Twitter account, “#Tejas to take off this December! Airplane proud to be part of this exhilarating story that is an ode to our brave airforce pilots! During an interview with Mumbai Mirror in February, Kangana stated, “Very often, the sacrifice made by our brave women in uniform go unnoticed by the nation. Tejas is a film where I have the honour of playing the role of such Air Force pilot who puts country before self. I hope we instill a sense of patriotism and pride in the youth of today with this movie. I am looking forward to the journey with Sarvesh and Ronnie on this one”.

The shooting of the movie was supposed to start in the month of July but got delayed die to pandemic. Now Kangana has revealed that the shoot will begin from December, 2020. The makers were targeting to release the movie in April, 2021 before.

Today, i.e. 27th June,’20 marks the 12th death anniversary of the country’s best-known soldier and 1971 war hero, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, who was the chief of Indian Army when India fought the Bangladesh Liberation war against Pakistan. Popularly called ‘Sam Bahadur’, he was the first Indian officer to be promoted to the rank of a field marshal.

After so many years, the life, times and contributions of heroic Field Marshal Sam would be brought to life by director Meghna Gulzar in the eponymous film ‘Sam’. Vicky Kaushal, who has established himself as a versatile actor in over five years, has been roped in for Meghna’s next.

Before this, Vicky has worked with Gulzar in the movie ‘Raazi’ and he will be seen essaying the role of Sam. This movie is produced by Ronnie Screwval, who is backing the project with his RSVP banner and the movie is set to take off in 2021, as Meghna once quoted in an interview to a media portal that this movie is not a biopic but rather she has to pick a narrative to tell Sam’s whole life and his contributions. The movie is going to be grand as it will showcase accession of Kashmir, Indo-Pak war, Partition and much more in the narrative.
