Rajya Sabha: Jagdeep Dhankhar gets angry over Raghav Chadha’s hand gesture

Uproar continued in the Upper House on Friday, demanding a discussion on the issue of lapse in security of Parliament. Meanwhile, when Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha was raising the question of security arrangements, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar warned him against making hand gestures.

Opposition MPs demanded postponement of the day’s scheduled business to discuss the serious situation arising out of the security lapse in Parliament on December 13. But the Chairman did not approve the notice and continued the Zero Hour. On this, the entire opposition erupted in protest and started raising slogans. Meanwhile, Chadha tried to raise the question of (security) arrangements by gesturing with his hand.

What did the Chairman of Rajya Sabha say?

The Chairman objected to this gesture and said, “Mr Chadha, you do not need to do this (hand gesture) to raise a point of order. Use your tongue. Do not do this.”

Reprimating the AAP MP, Dhankhar further said, “If you want to say something, use your mouth. Don’t gesture with your hands. Now is the time for you to learn many things. Looks like you too will start dancing soon. Sit quietly on your seat. You have already been punished by this House.”

Suspended during the monsoon Session

Chadha was suspended from the Rajya Sabha in August this year for presenting misleading facts in the media during the monsoon session of Parliament. The House, through a resolution on December 4, ended his suspension and he was allowed to attend the proceedings.

Proceedings could not take place

Meanwhile, opposition MPs remained firm on their demand that Union Home Minister Amit Shah should make a statement and then discuss the security breach. Seeing the increasing uproar, the Chairman adjourned the proceedings of the House first at 2 pm and then for the whole day. The House meeting will now resume on December 18. Dhankhar also asked Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal and other House leaders to meet him in his chamber.

The committee said his suspension lasted more than three months (suspended on August 11) till the date is enough punishment and therefore, he can now attend the proceedings of the House”, a source said.

Earlier in the morning, Raghav Chadha in a video message had thanked the Supreme Court and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and claimed his suspension was revoked.

“On 11th August, I was suspended from the Rajya Sabha. I went to the Supreme Court for the revocation of my suspension. The Supreme Court took cognizance of this and now my suspension has been revoked after 115 days” he said on social media post.

BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao had moved the motion to allow Raghav Chadha to attend the House , who was suspended from the Upper House for alleged breach of privileges.

Chadha, the Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, was suspended on August 11 during the Monsoon session of Parliament over the alleged breach of privilege.

The AAP leader was accused of not taking consent of five Rajya Sabha MPs before including their names in a select committee for considering the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill 2023.

On a complaint by the five MPs, the case was referred to the privileges committee and Chadha was suspended till the committee submitted its final report.

A Privileges Committee meeting of the Rajya Sabha was held in Parliament today to discuss the suspension matter of the AAP leader.

Delhi High Court orders AAP MP Raghav Chadha to not vacate his government bunglow

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha got a big relief from the Delhi High Court on Tuesday (October 17). The court said that Raghav Chadha will not have to vacate the existing Type-7 government bungalow. The High Court cancelled the lower court’s decision to lift the interim stay on the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.

Justice Anup J Bhambhani, who is hearing the case, said that the stay order passed by the lower court against the Rajya Sabha Secretariat will remain intact. This stay will remain in force until the trial court decides on his application for interim relief.

AAP leader Raghav Chadha welcomed the decision of Delhi High Court and said that truth has won. He wrote on social media X, “Not a house or a shop, but this fight is to protect our constitution. In the end, truth and justice have prevailed.”

Punjab’s Agniveer soldier Amritpal Singh died of self-inflicted injury in Jammu and Kashmir. Now the death of Agniveer soldier has turned political as the ruling party of Punjab is attacking the BJP-led centre for not giving guard of honour during his last rituals. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also attacked the Centre over the Agniveer Scheme and called it a ‘failed experiment’.

However, the Army already made it clear that the cause of death was self-inflicted injury, the accompanying personnel were in civilian dress and as per the existing policy, no guard of honour or military honour was given to the deceased. This is in line with existing policy on the subject.

However, Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has announed an ex gratia of Rs 1 crore to the family of Agniveer soldier Amritpal Singh and has demanded martyr status for Singh. While speaking to media, CM Mann said: “The army considers only those martyrs who lost their lives during combat. If some of our soldiers are patrolling in snow and lose their lives during a storm, then they are not considered martyrs. They were there on the patrol for the country. The Punjab government has made a policy of Rs. 1 Crore ex gratia.”

“Even if someone dies of a heart attack at -40 degrees, he should be considered a martyr because he was there serving the nation. It is not necessary that he should lose his life in a bullet from the enemy. We oppose the Agniveer scheme too for this. The way the army treated Amritpal- his body was sent to the family in an ambulance. Army said that he cannot be given a guard of honour according to the protocol. I will visit his house tomorrow. We have a cheque worth Rs 1 crore ready. I will also meet the Defence Minister for this,” said Mann, as quoted by ANI.

He said: “When Agniveer Amritpal was not given military honours by the BJP government, then the Punjab police decided to give state honours to him. This country is because of soldiers, not because of (political) leaders. We had said from the start that the Agniveer Yojana is a dangerous experiment. It should not be implemented. In an unfortunate incident, Agniveer Amritpal Singh died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on sentry duty in Rajouri sector on October 11, an Army release said. Efforts are being made to find out the cause of death in the Court of Inquiry.

Actor Parineeti Chopra and Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha are getting married on Sunday in Udaipur. On Saturday, they will take part in the pre-wedding ceremonies. The couple and their respective families arrived in Udaipur on Friday. Priyanka Chopra, Parineeti’s cousin, was among the planned visitors, but the star announced on Saturday morning that she will not be attending.

According to the wedding card that was leaked online, a welcome meal is planned for the guests on Saturday at around 1 p.m. It will be followed by a 90s-themed party, which will start about 7 p.m. The main ceremonies will be held at The Leela Palace, while other festivities, largely on the groom’s side, will be held at The Taj Lake Palace.

Parineeti and Raghav had known each other for quite some time. In May, they got engaged in Delhi. Parineeti had stated in the caption of one of her Instagram pictures about their love journey, “When you know, you know. One breakfast together and I knew – I had met the one. The most wonderful man whose quiet strength would be calming, peaceful, and inspiring. His support, humour, wit, and friendship are pure joy. He is my home.”

Parineeti’s ‘choora’ ceremony, on the other hand, is slated for 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Maharaja Suite, The Leela Palace and has already begun. The theme of the morning ceremony, ‘Adorn with love,’ according to the wedding card that leaked online, would include Parineeti’s family members in attendance.

As the wedding party arrived at The Leela Palace on Friday, the venue lit up with lights and looked stunning.

Priyanka Chopra indicates that she will not attend Parineeti Chopra’s wedding to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha in Udaipur. According to speculations, Priyanka will attend Parineeti’s wedding alongside her daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Priyanka’s mother, Madhu Chopra, has so far been spotted at the pre-wedding festivities.

Priyanka took to Instagram Stories on Saturday morning to post an old photo of Parineeti Chopra enjoying her drinks outside. She was dressed in a black blouse, a multicoloured skirt, and a hat. Parineeti grinned while closing her eyes.

Sharing the picture, Priyanka wrote, “I hope you are as happy and content as this on your big day little one..always wishing you so much love (red heart emoji) #newbeginnings @parineetichopra @raghavchadha88.”

Prior to this post, Priyanka shared an Instagram video of herself, her daughter Malti, and her brother-in-law Frankie Jones visiting a farm. Priyanka was seen in the video playing with a goat while attempting to balance it on her back. As the goat stood on her back, she laughed, posed, and spoke to someone.

In the video, Priyanka can be seen sporting a white blouse, khaki leggings, a cap and white sneakers. Malti, dressed in blue and red, was seen looking at the animals nearby. Frankie posed with several birds perched on his head and hands.

According to sources, the wedding procession will take place on September 24. Before this, Raghav’s Sehra Bandi will be performed at the Hotel Taj, located in the midst of Lake Pichola. The bridal procession would then depart with Raghav to pick up bride Parineeti from the Taj Hotel.

The wedding procession will go by boat to the neighbouring Hotel Leela. Preparations for this are also in full swing. It is being told that a glimpse of Mewari tradition will also be seen in the decoration of boats.

According to a fresh report by ETimes, the actor and Aam Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader would likely begin their wedding celebrations with a cricket match in Delhi. Parineeti Chopra and Raghav are expected to marry on September 24 in Udaipur.

“There are a lot of fun activities planned for the guests, activities planned for the guests, and one of them is a cricket match. It has been reported that the two met in London. The India-UK Outstanding Achiever Awards were presented to Chopra and Chadha in January of this year (in London).

On the professional front, Chopra most recently appeared in the 2022 patriotic drama, “Codename: Tiranga,” as well as Sooraj Barjatya’s adventure drama film “Uunchai,” which also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, and Boman Irani. She will also appear in Imtiaz Ali’s next film, “Chamkila,” a biography of the well-known Punjabi music legend Amar Singh Chamkila. Raghav Chadha, an AAP member, wrote to S Jaishankar, minister of external affairs, on Thursday to ask for his help in hastening the repatriation of 100 Punjabi immigrant workers who had become stranded in Abu Dhabi.

Raghav Chadha attempted to alert the Union Minister through letter that an estimated 100 Punjabi immigrant labourers were trapped in Abu Dhabi.

I wrote to EAM @DrSJaishankar requesting his immediate intervention in repatriation of a group of immigrant workers from Punjab stranded in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

He said that these employees were employed there by a private company.

“However, the firm has reportedly terminated their contracts and is unwilling to return their passports. As a result, they have been rendered unable to return to India despite making applications online and while their families are willing to arrange for their tickets,” said the Rajya Sabha MP in his missive.

“Therefore…As a Member of Parliament from the state of Punjab, I request your immediate intervention in the matter and issuance of directions to the Indian Consulate in Dubai to establish contact with the stranded individuals in order to arrange for their expeditious return to India,” said the Aam Aadmi Party leader.

AAP won Punjab Assembly polls in a sweeping victory with 92 seats. It now has an opportunity to nominate its Rajya Sabha contenders. A total of five have already been selected by AAP and these 5 members’ term in Punjab either will end soon or has already ended.

AAP officials on Monday said it has hand-picked Delhi MLA Raghav Chadha, IIT Delhi associate professor Sandeep Pathak, Cricketer Harbhajan Singh, Lovely Professional University (LPU) Founder and Chancellor Ashok Mittal, and Industrialist Sanjeev Arora as their upper house front runners.

The last date for nominating Rajya Sabha members is today and the elections will kick off on March 31^st for the same. All the five mentioned individuals’ term in Punjab is soon to end or has already ended.

Sandeep Pathak has been associated with AAP for several years now, although he was not a front runner. Still, according to party officials, he orchestrated the strategy for the Punjab polls.

On the other hand, Raghav Chadha at 33 will be Rajya Sabha’s youngest addition. He was the party in charge as well in Punjab and looked over the activities in Punjab for several months. He is AAP’s most noted national spokesperson.

As per AAP’s sources Harbhajan, Chadha, and Pathak’s nominations were sealed last week itself, however, a serious debate is ongoing for the remaining two contenders on Monday morning.

Delhi Jal Board VC Raghav Chadha writes to Haryana Chief Minister over ‘water crisis’

On Wednesday, April 14, Vice Chairman of Delhi Jal Board writes to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on the issue of reduction of water supply to Delhi.

In the letter, Chadha writes as how frequent pollution in River Yamuna and significant reduction in pond level of Yamuna adversely affecting water production at the water treatment plants of Delhi.

In the letter, Raghav Chadha also questioned as to why the water supply of major areas of the NCT of Delhi, including Diplomatic Missions/Embassies, President House, Hon’ble Supreme Court, Hon’ble High Court along with Hospitals treating Covid-19 patients of Delhi & neighboring states are being affected due to improper supply of water from Haryana.

Chadha pointed out that the water at two water treatment plants of NCT of Delhi, i.e., Wazirabad and Chandrawal is sourced from River Yamuna. This is drawn at Wazirabad Barrage in Delhi. The quality and quantity of raw water at Wazirabad is dependent on the release of raw water by Haryana. On many occasions, quality of available water at Wazirabad Barrage is not fit for treatment because of concentration of pollutants, particularly Ammonia, which results into partial or complete shutdown of the two water treatment plants.

Chadha further added in his letter, “The pollution is occurring due to waste water/industrial waste water discharge from Panipat Drain DD-1 through DD-2 and Rohtak X-regulator/ DD-6 through DD-8, which reaches Wazirabad Barrage, and in turn pollutes River Yamuna downstream.”

On Tuesday, April 13, Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman Raghav Chadha also addressed press conference on the water scarcity and said that south, north, central and west Delhi are going to be hit by water scarcity as Haryana is not supplying sufficient water to the national capital.

Raghav Chadha also added in the press conference, “We have also approached the Supreme Court and have written to the Haryana government continuously for 15-20 days about the amount of Ammonia in the water. But the Haryana government has closed its eyes. We demand from the Haryana government that it provide clean and complete water to Delhi.”

“The rate at which we are vaccinating our citizens, it will take 15 years to vaccinate the entire population. The AAP demands an increase in the rate of vaccinations against Covid-19 so that each and every Indian can get vaccinated,” said Raghav Chadha.

“The ministry of external affairs said a few days ago that India is competing with China in terms of exporting vaccines. Proudly stating that India is ahead of China in terms of vaccine diplomacy. A country which has a total of 90,000 Covid-19 cases is being compared to a country where 90,000 cases are recorded everyday,” Chadha further said while addressing the press conference.
