PM Modi lauds Japan as an “indispensable partner” in India’s development

Ahead of his bilateral meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, PM Narendra Modi praised Japan for being the most reliable and indispensable partner in India’s development. The two Prime Ministers would hold a bilateral meeting on Tuesday.

“We have also fostered a dynamic startup ecosystem in India, with over 100 unicorns. The Japanese capital is already playing an important role in this effort. And there is potential for a great deal more,” according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India and Japan have been collaboratively working on numerous developmental projects with one crucial bring Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet train project.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, while briefing about PM Modi’s visit to Japan, said, “Modi has referred to the India-Japan relationship as being one of the most natural in the region. In the last few years, the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership have seen great momentum.”

He further added, “The meeting (between Modi and Kishida) will be an opportunity to carry forward the high-level engagement between the two countries, as also to advance bilateral cooperation agenda.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo for the Quad Leaders’ Summit on Monday, beginning a two-day visit to Japan. He met Soft Bank Group Board Director Masayoshi Son and other important business leaders of Japan.

In Tokyo, Prime Minister Modi also met with Dr. Nobuhiro Endo, Chairman of NEC Corporation. He praised NEC’s contribution to India’s telecommunications sector. Also, highlighting the potential of new and emerging technologies in India, according to MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.

PM Modi and the chairman of the National Economic Council discussed many reforms aimed at making it easier to do business in India, including industrial growth, taxation, and labor.

Modi meets indian diaspora

“Har Har Modi,” “Modi Modi,” “Vande Mataram,” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” slogans rang throughout the hotel as Indian diaspora members shouted and waved their flags in honor of the Prime Minister. The phrase “Welcome” was printed in many languages on posters held by children.

“During my visit to Tokyo, I look forward to continuing our conversation further, with an aim to strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership,” Modi said ahead of his visit.

Thus, the PM will attend an event hosted by US President Joe Biden to launch the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework later in the day. He’ll also meet with Biden on a bilateral basis. The Quad Summit, which will take place tomorrow, is the main feature of the Prime Minister’s visit.

India joins Australia for the Quad meeting

Mr. S. Jaishankar, Minister for External Affairs (MEA) is on route to Australia today to attend a high-profile multilateral meeting with the Quad Ministers of Australia Ms. Marise Payne, of US Mr. Antony Blinken, of Japan Mr. Hayashi Yoshimasa.

This meeting is primarily summoned to discuss the liaison on vaccines, on technology and regional security & border issues related to China.

This will be Mr. Jaishankar’s first visit to Australia as an external affairs minister; emphasis will be mostly on the combined vision of all the four participating countries for a free, open and inclusive Indo-pacific region.

The MEA said,” The Ministers will review the ongoing Quad cooperation and build on the positive and constructive agenda announced by the leaders at the two summits in 2021, to address contemporary challenges, supply chains, critical technologies, climate change, infrastructure.”

In the itinerary of Mr. Jaishankar, there is a separate dialogue with his Australian counterpart Ms. Payne.

After his trip to Australia on the 13th February 2022, Mr. Jaishankar is to visit the Philippines. In January 2022 India had signed a remarkable $375 million deal with the Philippines for dispensing the ‘Brahmos’ Supersonic cruise missiles. The MEA said their visits would “gain momentum” with India’s key partners in the Indo-pacific, Australia and the Philippines; which is a prominent member of ASEAN.

Incidentally, the MEA statement avoided mentioning China, However, US officials were enthusiastic of taking up the ‘challenges that China poses’.

The February 2022 Quad meeting aims to lay the foundation for a second Quad leaders summit most probably to convene this summer.

India, US, Japan, Australia likely to hold ‘Quad’ meet next month

Amid the growing tensions between the US and China, the United States is planning to hold high-level talks with its “Quad” security partners i.e. India, Australia, and Japan in September and October, President Trump’s national security adviser said.

The US NSA told the Atlantic Council think-tank he would probably meet his “Quad” security partners in Hawaii in the month of October, while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet his counterparts in September and October.

For the uninitiated, the grouping of 4 democracies – India, US, Australia, and Japan – is known as the “Quadrilateral security dialogue” or “Quad”. It was first mooted by Japanese PM Shinzo Abe in 2007.

It has been recently revived and is being viewed as a response to growing Chinese economic as well as a military power.
