Here’s why Rajinikanth’s appeal for Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar in the movie PS1 got rejected by Mani Ratnam

The most upcoming much awaited first part of the main franchise Ponniyin Selvan has yesterday launched its audio and trailer in a show at Chennai Nehru Indoor Stadium. Several stars were roped in the launching of its trailer including Rajanikanth, Kamal Haasan, Anil Kapoor, Rana Daggubatti, Jayant Kaikini And Prithviraj Sukumaran.

The Robot man Rajinikanth there unraveled a surprising secret about the movie with expressing a huff, that the director Mani Ratnam has refused him to take part in the film.

The superstar, confesses his ardent love for the original novel series from which the film has been adopted, Amarar Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan novel series. And he wanted to be part of Mani Ratnam’s film adaptation specifically appealed for the role of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar but got rejected! The actor further clarifies why he got refused.

Speaking at the event, Rajini spoke at length about his fascination for the novel and why Mani Ratnam didn’t let me play a part in the film.

His statement reads, “I somehow wanted to be part of Ponniyin Selvan, and I asked Mani Ratnam to let me play the role of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar. I said at least I will do a special appearance. Mani Ratnam said no. He asked ‘why do you want me to face the brunt of your fans? He said that he will not exploit me that way. Any other director would have used me instantly, but he didn’t. That’s Mani Ratnam,”

Talking about the film, Rajinikanth said, “There are three heroes of this event. One is Kalki, next is producer Subaskaran and Mani Ratnam. People were waiting for the magazine as fans wait for tickets in theatres. I used to wonder why this novel series was never made as a film. It could be because in those days the concept of the ‘part 1 part 2’ trend was not there. This film will become an achievement in Indian cinema.”

Speaking about the novel and the author Amarar Kalki Krishnamurthy he tells, many wanted to make the film over the years but now this has truly performed that’s quite an overwhelming news for him.

He reminisces how he used to wonder about this film back in his youth. “I used to think that I should play Vallavarayan. Kamal should play Arulmozhi Varman, and Vijayakanth should play Aditya Karikalan. Rekha should play Nandini. Sathyaraj for Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar. I was dreaming all of this back then.”

The day is not so far when the part one of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ franchise will be hitting the screens and today was the trailer launching day of PS1.

It’s an Indian Tamil-language epic period action film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan.
The cast list includes Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Lal, and Sobhita Dhulipala who were present today at the trailer launching show at Chennai Nehru Indoor Stadium.
The Bollywood diva and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be playing one of the pivotal roles in the film as queen Nandini.

The actresss expresses her gratitude for being a part of this film as she got an opportunity to work with the legends sir A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam once again with whom she has collaborated at the very beginning of her career.

At today’s launch evening, reminiscing her memories, emotionally the actress states, “I am very happy to be here at the trailer launch. Thank you for joining us on this special occasion. Ponniyin Selvan is a very precious film, very dear to our hearts. It has been an absolute honour to work with Mani Ratnam again, with such a talented team of actors and technicians. Tthe entire cast is stellar. Everyone is outstanding. What an evening for us to be regaled with AR Rahman’s music. To actually celebrate this momentous occasion, also recognising rightly the incredible coming together of iconic talents AR Rahman and Mani Ratnam. I had the privilege of working with them at the beginning of my career—this talented duo, with Iruvar, and here I am again, as part of Ponniyin Selvan.”

According to one source, “Ponniyin Selvan I chronicles the story of Arul Mozhivarman (Jayam Ravi) and his ascent to the throne of the Chola kingdom against a coup. The story will be narrated from the point of view of Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan (Karthi), a messenger of Aditya Karikalan (Vikram), who travels through the southern kingdoms to pass on the messages between the Cholas.”
The film is based on author Kalki Krishnamurthy’s five-volume novel. Ponniyin Selvan and the first part will be releasing on September 30.

Aishwarya Rai resumes shoot for Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film ‘Ponniyin Selvan’

Director Mani Rathnam, has earlier revealed that the movie will be released in two portions and approximately 75% of the movie’s filming is finalized. The makers are planing for a theatrical release in the following year.

The makers of Ponniyin Selvan dropped the first look poster of the much-awaited film and it was well accepted by the audience. The shooting of this periodic drama resumed recently in Pondicherry. Karthi has already united with the sets and started filming. The star-studded magnum opus stars an ensemble of actors like Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Jayam Ravi and Aishwarya Lekshmi among others. Now, it is been noted that Aishwarya and Lekshmi have entered the team in Pondicherry for shooting their respective portions.

Few days back, Aishwarya had taken to her Instagram handle to share the poster of the first part of the historic film. She captioned the image as, “The Golden Era comes to Life Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan PS1″.

The movie is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. The book records the tale of the early days of Arulmozhivarman, one of the most influential kings in the south, who went on to become the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Ratnam had conveyed that most of the shooting has been done and they are striving for a theatrical release.
