Nepal road accident leaves 17 dead after jeep falls about 700 metres

At least 17 people were killed on Thursday when a jeep skidded off a hilly road and plunged about 700 metres into a gorge in Nepal’s Rolpa district, police said.

The vehicle went off the road in the Thawang area of Rolpa, according to local reports. The jeep was travelling from Rukum East when it met with the accident at Jaljala in Thawang Rural Municipality-1. Police said rescue operations were underway as rain and difficult terrain complicated efforts at the crash site.

Officials said the road conditions were slippery at the time of the accident, with muddy stretches and heavy rainfall making travel dangerous in the hill district. Early reports also said the vehicle plunged deep into the gorge after skidding off the narrow road.

The accident has drawn attention to the continuing safety risks on mountain roads in Nepal, where steep gradients, poor weather and difficult terrain often contribute to fatal crashes. Authorities were still working to complete rescue and recovery efforts as the area remained affected by rain.

A heartbreaking incident was reported from Mumbai where four members of a family died after suspected food poisoning, officials said on Monday. The victims reportedly developed symptoms of vomiting shortly before their condition worsened, raising concerns about possible food contamination.

According to police officials, the victims include a couple and their two minor daughters. The family had consumed food at their residence before falling ill. Preliminary reports indicate that all four members began experiencing severe vomiting and discomfort within hours, raising suspicion of food poisoning.

The incident reportedly took place after a family gathering at their home in south Mumbai. Officials said that after hosting guests and sharing a meal, the family later consumed watermelon, following which their health condition worsened significantly. Those who had only eaten the main meal reportedly did not fall ill, leading investigators to examine the possibility of contamination in the food consumed later.

As their condition deteriorated, the family members were rushed to a nearby hospital and later shifted to a government facility for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, all four succumbed. The head of the family was reported to be the last to die late Sunday night.

Police confirmed that post-mortem examinations of the bodies have been conducted. However, the exact cause of death is yet to be established. Officials stated that viscera samples and food samples have been sent for forensic analysis, and the final confirmation will depend on histopathology and laboratory reports.

An Accidental Death (AD) case has been registered, and authorities have launched a detailed investigation. Police teams are also questioning relatives and examining the source of the food consumed by the family to determine whether contamination, spoilage, or any external factor led to the incident.

Officials have urged caution, especially during the summer season when food contamination cases tend to rise. Health experts have also advised people to avoid consuming stale or improperly stored food items and to maintain hygiene while handling perishable items.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the locality, with neighbours expressing grief over the sudden loss. Authorities have assured that all angles, including food contamination and possible external factors, are being thoroughly examined.

NCRB Report: Left-wing militants killed twice the number of police personnel as compared to terrorists

According to National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) annual crime in India report of 2021, the number of policemen slain by Left Wing Extremists (LWE) was double that of terrorists.

The report stated that terrorists had killed 18 police personnel whereas the LWEs had killed 40 personnel. Additionally, it mentioned that 11 personnel were slain in cross-border firing and scuffles with criminals and 1 by a rioting mob. 7 personnel died due to self-weapon accidents.

The report also revealed that North East insurgents killed no police personnel.

Out of the total 427 police personnel who were killed on duty, the highest was of constable rank (233) followed by head constables (88), Assistant Sub-Inspectors (37), Sub-Inspectors (26), Inspectors (4), one Gazetted Officers and two others.

A total of 1632 police officers of all ranks were reported injured within the same time period.

Tamil Nadu had the highest number of police fatalities among the states, with 56 officers killed in car accidents and two by intruders. Forty police officers perished in traffic accidents and LWE in Chattisgarh. 38 police officers lost their lives in traffic accidents in Bihar, while one was killed by riotous mobs.

In the union territories, terrorists killed 18 police officers in Jammu and Kashmir, and two more died in road accidents in Delhi.

Odisha reported the highest number of police officers hurt during operations to apprehend criminals in 2021. 12 of the 188 police officers who were hurt by rioting mobs and 176 by criminals each. A total of 159 police officers were hurt in Kerala, with 90 of them being hurt by criminals, 68 by riotous mobs, and one in a car accident. In Tamil Nadu, a total of 133 police officers were reported hurt, including 30 offenders and three accidental self-weapon incidents.

The largest number of police injuries in Union Territories were reported in Delhi, where 156 officers were hurt by riotous mobs, and 22 by criminals, and 17 in accidents.

No Police Selection Board formed yet: Madhya Pradesh Government

And attendant details have been sought from PHQ. Recruitment processes are underway and at present the work is being executed by the Professional Examination Board”. Over 130 companies of Central Armed Police Forces to be deployed for Bengal bypolls

Kolkata, March 26 (UNI) Around 133 companies of Central Armed Police forces are expected to be deployed in phases for the by-polls to the Asansol Lok Sabha and Ballygunge Assembly seats in West Bengal, scheduled to be held on April 12, sources said on Saturday. The Election Commission is expected to hold a video conference later on Saturday with the state bureaucrats and police officers regarding the law and order and deployment of central forces. Senior officers of the central forces are slated to be present during the parleys. Sources said the Central Armed Police forces from the CRPF, BSF and CISF are likely to be deployed to keep vigil at the polling booths and centres in Paschim Bardhaman district’s Asansol and Ballygunge assembly seats in the city. The forces are expected to be on duty for area domination from early next month or end of this week. State chief election officer Ariz Aftab, who has already held a virtual meeting with the Election Commision of India officials on Friday, would also participate in the video conference on Saturday, the sources said. The ADG ( Law and Order), West Bengal, senior officials from BSF, CRPF and CISF and others would take part in the virtual meeting, sources added. The by-poll results would be announced on April 16. Two former Union Ministers – famed Bollywood actor Shatrughan Sinha of and and singer Babul Supriyo – are contesting as state’s ruling Trinamool Congress candidates from Asansol and Ballygunge respectively. The main opposition BJP has fielded designer turned political activist Agnimitra Paul from Asansol and Keya Ghosh from Ballygunge to challenge the ruling party candidates. The Left Front has named two CPI-M candidates Saira Shah Halim for Ballygunge and Partha Mukherjee for the industrial belt constituency of Asansol. The bypoll was necessitated in the Asansol constituency as Babul Supriyo resigned as BJP MP after being dropped from the union council of ministers last year. The Ballygunge seat fell vacant as incumbent MLA and state minister Subrata Mukherjee died last November.

34 year old man slits his own throat in-front of Police in Chennai

On Monday, a 34-year-old drunk man slit his own throat with a liquor bottle after he had been confronted by a police officer for drinking alcohol in the open in Chennai’s Tirumullaivoyal area. However, the man died on the way to the hospital.

Bhagyaraj was the identity of the drunk 34-year-old man, who was an auto driver and resident of Ayyapan Nagar at Ayapakkam in the Thiruvallur district.

On Monday afternoon a head constable, Santhosh, at the Tirumullaivoyal Police Station, was on a round in Ayapakkam when he saw 4 men drinking in the middle of the bushes which was 50 metres away from an auto-rickshaw parked on the road opposite of a private school.

The senior Police officer said that Santhosh, the head constable, asked the 4 men to leave the spot, and two of them left immediately. However, Bhagyaraj and a friend of his, Pradip, did not leave the scene, both of them drunk. Santhosh went closer to them and asked them to leave the spot but Bhagyaraj denied doing so and threatened the head constable by saying that he would harm himself if he came closer. The senior police officer added that when the head constable raised his voice again, then the man, Bhagyaraj suddenly broke the liquor bottle and allegedly slit his neck by the broken liquor bottle.

The senior officer mentioned that the head constable informed the police station of the incident and had rushed Bhagyaraj to a hospital. He was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in his own auto-rickshaw after being given first aid. However, the man was declared dead before reaching the hospital.

The case has been registered by the Tirumullaivoyal police. The police had mentioned that the deceased has a wife and two children.

Mehrazuddin Halwai, another Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, encountered

Hizbul Mujahideen, a top terrorist outfit, had been eliminated in an encounter in the Handwara district, as mentioned by the police on Wednesday. Mehrazuddin alias Ubaid was one of the oldest terrorists of the terror outfit. Vijay Kumar, the Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, had said that the killing of Mehrazuddin Halwai was a big success.

The Kashmir Zone Police in a tweet had said quoting the IGP Kashmir that one of the oldest and top commanders of HM terror outfit Mehrazuddin Halwai alias Ubaid had neutralized in the Handwara encounter, he was involved in many terror crimes, and the encounter was a big success for them.

On Wednesday morning, the security forces had launched a cordon and search operation at Pazipora-Renan in the Handwara area of the district, following the information about the presence of the militants there. The police said that the operation had turned into an encounter after the security forces were fired upon by Mehrazuddin Halwai.

The police also added that Mehrazuddin Halwai had been killed in retaliatory action by the security personnel.

Assam Police arrested over 1,000 drugs peddlers in May

New Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s war on drugs, police have arrested several dealers and seized large quantities of illegal substances over the past week.

The Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, “35 arrests were made and 20 cases registered on Sunday alone and the seizer list from that day consisted of 469.7 grams of heroin, 574.31 kg ganja, 1499 tablets, and Rs 20, 700 in cash.

Mr Sarma tweeted his congratulation: “Good work by Assam Police to address the menace of narcotics.”

Last month, 2,439 grams of heroin, 91 kg of ganja, 17,551 bottles of cough syrup, around 1.57 lakh methamphetamine tablets, 14.16 grams of morphine, and Rs 10.5 lakh in cash were seized.

The DGP also said, “1,008 people have been arrested and 618 cases registered since the crackdown on drugs began in January.”

“We have launched a massive operation against the drug trade in Assam. Our focus is on drug peddlers because we need to break the supply chain and they are at the lower levels… transporting drugs to the customers. Our fight will be long but we will continue,” he said.

“If we want to hit supply we have to go from the lower level. We have changed our strategy and are focusing on peddlers, not big smugglers. Insurgents groups in the northeast are also involved,” the DGP explained, indicating that insurgents often provide security for the drug smugglers.

“I appeal to the society to not treat as criminals… rather as patients and help them in rehabilitation. Many are trying to understand them. Society has a big role to play in supporting them to go to rehabilitation centres for treatment,” he further said.

The DGP also referred to poppy farms that are the main source of drug production.

USA: One student shot dead, one police officer wounded in Knoxville school shooting

The gunfire, which erupted at about 3:15 p.m. at Austin-East Magnet High School on the east side of Knoxville, marked the latest in a rash of shootings in the United States since mid-March.

The wounded police officer was struck by a round in the upper leg and was in serious condition following surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville police officials said. He was expected to survive.

Mayor Indya Kincannon told CBS News said, “He is conscious and in good spirits. He’s going to be OK. I thanked him for putting his life on the line to protect students and staff at the school. He said he’d rather be hurt than anybody else”.

Knoxville police said they responded to Austin-East after getting reports of a gunman at the school and found the suspect in a bathroom.

“As officers entered the space, the suspect reportedly fired shots, striking an officer. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and has since been identified as a student at Austin-East,” David Rausch, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, told an evening news conference.

Knoxville Police Chief Eve Thomas, speaking at the same news conference, called the incident “chilling.” Police had initially reported multiple gunshot victims in the attack.

Austin-East was locked down following the gunfire and parents who rushed to the scene were directed to pick up their children at a rear entrance. Police later established a reunification site for students and their parents at a baseball field. A mother who had been separated from her daughter was waiting near the school and told reporters she was greatly relieved to receive a text message from the girl that she was safe.

The Austin-East community has been shaken by gun violence this year. Four other students at the school were killed in recent months in shootings in the city, according to media reports.

In shootings across the United States since mid-March, a man opened fire last week at a Texas cabinet-making plant where he worked, killing one person and wounding six before he was arrested, authorities said. Eight people were slain at Atlanta-area spas, 10 people at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, and four people, including a 9-year-old boy, at a real estate office in the Southern California city of Orange.

A 35-year-old man was allegedly beaten up by two police constables on the road of Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city on Tuesday, April 6, after a dispute over not wearing a face mask, which has been made mandatory in view of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Congress member Gaurav Pandhi shared a video on his Twitter handle with a caption, “Policemen in Indore brutally beating a man for not wearing a mask (which he should) while his child cries, pleading infront of the cops. @ChouhanShivraj will your shameless policemen do the same to PM Modi or BJP leaders who say “no need to wear mask”?”. The video is getting viral on social media and netizens are sharing the video by raising questions on the alleged assault by Indore police.

After a video of the alleged incident went viral on social media, both policemen were suspended, an official said. Police claimed that the man first assaulted and abused the constables. In the video, the two policemen are purportedly seen thrashing the man on the street even as his teenage son and some women beg for mercy.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Indore, Ashutosh Bagri, said the two constables seen in the video have been suspended and a City Superintendent of Police (CSP) has been asked to investigate the matter.

Bagri further claimed, “When those two cops tried to escort this man to Police Station for not wearing mask, he tried to assault them. That part has been cropped in the video to malign Police’ image. What those cops did was also wrong, they’ve been suspended. Inquiry is underway”.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Rahul Kothari has also reacted to this issue and said, “On the basis of initial information, 2 police officers have been suspended. The man had several cases against him. He was adamant about not wearing a mask, the police were only trying to control him, they weren’t beating him,” as quoted by ANI.

On the other side, the victim has said, “Was taking food for my father in hospital when Police asked me to come to PS as my mask had slipped. I requested that I could report later but they began hitting me,” as quoted by ANI.

Six teams created to investigate the Unnao minor girls case

The police have grouped six teams to investigate the Unnao case in which two minor girls were found dead at a field on 17th February 2021. The Superintendent Police of the district is monitoring these teams, the police informed.

“Six teams were formed to investigate the case. SP Unnao himself is monitoring these teams. Postmortem report has revealed several things and our investigation is heading in the right way. We hope to get a breakthrough soon,” Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Lucknow range Lakshmi Singh told ANI on Friday 19th February.

Three minor girls were discovered lying unconscious by villagers in a field in Asoha on Wednesday 17th February. Two were declared brought dead at the hospital and the third girl is said to be in critical condition and is being treated at a hospital in Kanpur.

Police on Thursday 18th February filed an FIR based on the complaint of family members of two girls who were found dead.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath acknowledged the tragedy and has asked the Director-General of Police to request a detailed report on the incident. He had ordered officials to provide the best possible treatment to the victim at government cost, according to a release by the chief minister’s office.

Two women Naxals killed in Madhya Pradesh in separate encounters by police

In a forest area of Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district bordering Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra two women Naxals were killed in separate encounters with police, an official said.

On Saturday, Superintendent of Police Abhishek Tiwari told reporters that the Naxals were killed around 11 pm and 7 am respectively on Friday.

“The two slain Maoists are yet to be identified officially. However, some people who were earlier associated with the rebels claimed on the basis of their pictures that one of them was from Gadchiroli in Maharashtra and another one from Bastar in Chhattisgarh,” he said.

The encounters took place under Kirnapur police station area, police reported.

Chhattisgarh: Chhattisgarh police exhumed the buried body of a suspected gangrape victim girl two months after she ended her life by committing suicide. A few days ago, the alleged rape victim’s father tried to commit suicide. The incident reported in the Kondagaon district of Chhattisgarh. The police called us a few days later and said they are registering an FIR, but the accused continued to roam freely for months,” the girl’s uncle said.

“Her body was exhumed from the grave on Wednesday for autopsy in presence of a police team and the tehsildar. A case of gang rape has been registered,” he added.

In the Hathras Gangrape Case, Sandeep Thakur is one of the accused in the alleged gangrape and torture of the woman from Hathras District. Currently, he is in jail along with the three other accused.

On Wednesday, Thakur wrote a letter to the local police of Hathras and claimed that he and the woman were friends. He said, he and his friends are being framed by the family in this case and they sought justice. The family had a problem with their daughter and his friendship, and they used to brutally beat her over it, the letter said.

The letter was handwritten in Hindi with attested thumb impressions of all four accused.

The handwritten letter said, “Later, the villagers told me that her mother and brothers beat her up over our friendship, injuring her badly. I never beat her or done anything wrong with her. Her mother and brothers falsely accused me along with three of my friends and sent us to jail. We’ve done nothing wrong and are innocent. The police had earlier claimed that there is evidence that the victim’s family knew one of the accused.

Call records reveal, the connection between the woman’s brother and Sandeep. The brother was in touch with Sandeep Thakur and some 104 calls were made between the both from October last year to March, the police claimed.

“On the day of the incident, I had gone to meet her in the fields that day where her mother and brothers were also present. I returned home after being asked by her to do so. I then started feeding cattle,” Sandeep said in the letter.

Sandeep Thakur had alleged her family ‘did not like their friendship.’

“They sent the letter to the Hathras Superintendent of Police yesterday evening and as per law, we have sent it to the Hathras Superintendent of Police. They have put forward their version of the story and now the investigating agencies will see,” Alok Singh, Senior Superintendent of Aligarh Jail said today.

The victim’s father has denied all the allegations made by the accused.

On the 14 of September, the woman was allegedly assaulted by four men of her village in the Hathras later she died last Tuesday due to gruesome injuries from the attack.

UPSC to reimburse Air Fares for candidates appearing in the interview round of the Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandant) Exam

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has said that, “as train services are not fully functional, to facilitate the candidates, as a one-time measure, the Commission, has decided to reimburse the lowest economy class ‘to and fro’ air fare to the candidates for attending the personality tests”.

Due to the current situation created by COVID-19, Railway trains are not running in and therefore UPSC has decided that to claim reimbursement for the air fare for candidates who will require boarding passes & airlines tickets (Both sides).

UPSC will reimburse the air fare to candidates who will appear for the interview round of the Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandant) exam.

UPSC will also decide the nearest airport for reimbursement on the basis of given details by candidates.

UPSC released an interview letter on 12th of October 2020 as the Interview will be starting from 2nd November continuing for two weeks.

In the view of the COVID-19 Pandemic, UPSC will provide safety kits to candidates on the interview day. The kit will include face masks, face shields and a bottle of sanitizer & gloves.

J&K: Handwara Police arrested a terror associate from Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamic militant organization

Today, the Jammu and Kashmir Police reported the arrest of a terror associate from Lashkar-e-Taiba, the largest Islamic militant organization in South Asia. He was arrested by the Handawara Police, the 32 RR of the Indian Army, 92 Battalion of the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation. The ammunition and arms have been recovered his possession, police reports.

Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, today rewarded the accomplished personnel in the police force. Manoj remarked, “Our police force have always shown highest professionalism and greatest perseverance in handling cross-border terrorism & making a concerted effort in maintaining peace in J&K.”

The J&K issued promotions to “Superintendent of Police” and “Deputy Superintendent of Police” for more than 550 officers. The government also granted a selection grade of DySP “in favor of more than 300 officers including 440 serving officers.”

A few of the promotions were pending since 2007.

Andra Pradesh: AP Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy launches AP Police Seva app for easier access to police force

On Thursday afternoon, Jagan Mohan Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Cheif Minister, announced the release of AP Police Seva, an app for users to access the police department virtually. The app was released “at his office in Amaravati.”

The app permits civilians to have easier access to the police force. Mohan said, “It’ll enable the user to register complaints, check for FIR status and E-challans, file passport applications, licenses & NOC. The nearest police station will also be alerted in case of a road accident.” There are 80 other services that the app offers. The Hans India reported that the app also connects all the police stations in the state and provides 12 other services for women. Civilians are able to receive complaint receipts and contact the police force through social media streams Facebook, Whatsapp, and Twitter.

The release of the AP Police Seva app is only one of the many reforms that the state has in the government.

Two arreseted in the 13-year-old’s rape and murder

India became the victim to another rape case this Friday. A 13-year-old girl was brutally raped and strangled to death in Uttar Pradesh. Two neighbors in the village have been arrested by the police.

As per a report by NDTV, the horrific incident took place on Friday, around 130 km from Lucknow, in a village close to the Nepal border. While her body was found in the fields of one of the accused.

“Police have registered an FIR against Sanjay Kumar and Santosh under IPC section 302 (murder) and SC/ST Act at Isanagar police station and both the accused were detained on Saturday. Later, section 376d (gang-rape) and POCSO were added to the FIR after an autopsy confirmed the sexual assault.” read TOI’s report.

Station House Officer SHO Isanagar told TOI, “The accused Sanjay had a tiff with the girl’s family over defecating in his farmland in the past. The girl was found in his cane field and family had named him in their complaint. During interrogation, Sanjay has accepted to have killed the girl along with Santosh, who is also a Dalit. The eyes of the girl were not gouged out but there were visible injuries on her eyes caused by sharp sugarcane leaves”

According to recent crime figures, every fourth rape victim in India is a child. In an overwhelming number of rape cases, the victims know the perpetrators. Many on social media have expressed their views and concerns about the happening.
