Thousands of teacher recruitment aspirants staged a major protest in Patna on Friday demanding the release of the notification for the Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE) 4.0 conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC).

The protest escalated into chaos after police resorted to lathicharge near JP Golambar while attempting to stop demonstrators marching toward the BPSC office. Several aspirants reportedly sustained injuries during the crackdown.

According to reports, thousands of candidates gathered near Patna College before beginning a march toward the commission’s office to protest the delay in the TRE-4 recruitment advertisement. The candidates have been demanding clarity from BPSC regarding the release of the examination notification and recruitment schedule.

Police had placed barricades near JP Golambar to prevent protesters from moving further toward the commission office. Tensions escalated after some demonstrators allegedly attempted to remove or cross the barricades, following which security personnel used batons to disperse the crowd.

Visuals from the protest showed police personnel chasing demonstrators on roads while aspirants ran in different directions amid the lathicharge. Some protesters were seen falling on roads during the police action.

The demonstration caused traffic disruptions in parts of central Patna for several hours as large crowds gathered in the area. Authorities later increased security deployment around the BPSC office and adjoining routes to prevent further escalation.

The protesting aspirants alleged that repeated delays in issuing the TRE-4 notification were affecting their preparation and future employment opportunities. Many candidates have been demanding an immediate announcement regarding vacancies and examination timelines.

There was no immediate official statement from BPSC regarding the recruitment notification at the time of reporting. Police officials also did not release details on detentions or the exact number of injured protesters.

The incident has once again brought focus on growing frustration among government job aspirants in Bihar over delays in recruitment examinations and appointment processes.

SJVN (Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Bihar for the development of the 1000 MW Hathidah Durgawati Pumped Storage Project (PSP) along with other PSPs in the state.

The MoU was signed in Patna, in the presence of key officials including Sh. Vijay Kumar Sinha, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Sh. Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Minister of Energy and Planning & Development, Sh. Nitish Mishra, Minister of Industries and Tourism, and Sh. Raj Kumar Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN.

The MoU was officially signed by Sh. Mukesh Kumar Sharma, General Manager, BDE, SJVN, and Smt. Bandana Preyashi, IAS (Secretary), Department of Industries, Govt. of Bihar. This collaboration is set to generate significant employment opportunities, with the development of these PSPs expected to create both direct and indirect employment for around 5,000 individuals. Additionally, the project will involve an investment of approximately ₹10,000 crore.

In August 2022, the Ministry of Power, Government of India, designated SJVN as the nodal agency for the development of Pumped Storage Projects in Bihar. Subsequently, four PSPs were allotted to SJVN by the Secretary (Energy), Government of Bihar, on August 22, 2022. These include Telharkund PSP (400 MW), Sinafdar PSP (345 MW), Panchgotia PSP (225 MW), and Hathidah Durgawati PSP (1600 MW). Following a series of ranking studies, SJVN identified the Hathidah Durgawati PSP as the most viable project and prepared a Feasibility Study Report (FSR) for the same, which proposes a capacity of 1000 MW.

Located on the Durgawati River in Kaimur district, Bihar, the Hathidah Durgawati PSP will have an installed capacity of 1000 MW (4×250 MW). The project is expected to generate a daily peak energy output of 6.325 million units (MU) and an annual peak energy of 2,308.65 MU. The estimated project cost is ₹5,663 crore, with a levelized tariff of ₹9.39 per kWh (assuming a pumping energy rate of ₹3 per kWh) based on February 2024 price levels.

SJVN is currently engaged in the development of approximately 12,000 MW of PSPs across various states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Mizoram, and Himachal Pradesh. The Hathidah Durgawati PSP is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing energy demands of Bihar while contributing significantly to the state’s renewable energy initiatives.

Bihar, a state in eastern India, is one of the oldest inhabited regions in the world, with a history spanning over 3,000 years. The state’s rich culture and heritage are evident from the numerous ancient monuments found across Bihar. With many tourist attractions, Bihar draws large numbers of visitors from around the globe every year, who come to experience its long and storied past. Despite its antiquity, Bihar remains an important cultural hub, offering tourists a window into India’s ancient civilizations through its preserved historical sites and landmarks.

Best time to visit: The winter months from November to mid-March are the most ideal time to visit Bihar. With mild temperatures ranging from 4°C to 10°C and bright sunny days, the winter season in Bihar is quite pleasant. Since the winters are not too severe, many festivals and celebrations take place during this period, making it an enjoyable time to plan a trip to the state.

Here are the top places to visit on your next trip to Bihar:

Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Indian state of Bihar. It is famous for the Mahabodhi Temple, which marks the spot where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree. Bodh Gaya has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many foreign countries, like Japan and China, have assisted India in developing facilities for Buddhist pilgrims who visit throughout the year. The area used to be called Uruwela and was also known as Sambodhi, Vajrasana or Mahabodhi until the 18th century. Along with Kushinagar, Lumbini and Sarnath, it is considered one of the four most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage destinations.

Patna

Patna, located on the southern banks of the Ganges river in Bihar, India, has a long and glorious history as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It is an important tourist destination as well as a gateway for Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist pilgrims visiting nearby sacred sites.

Originally named Pataliputra, Patna is now a centre of political activity. The older part of the city is called Bankipur, while the newer areas have wide roads and modern buildings. Patna showcases Bihar’s rich cultural heritage through its many monuments like the Patna Sahib Gurudwara, Patna Planetarium, the High Court, Golghar, Secretariat Building, Padri ki Haveli and numerous other attractions.

Despite its ancient roots, Patna maintains an identity as a quintessential modern North Indian city.

Nalanda

Nalanda was once home to one of the oldest and most prestigious Buddhist universities and monasteries of ancient times. Today, this spiritual city remains an enriching destination, offering glimpses into its vibrant history, culture, architecture and tourism.

While the ancient university complex lies in ruins now, it continues to attract visitors with its monasteries to the east, temples to the west, and a small museum housing Buddhist and Hindu artefacts like stupas, bronzes, coins, pottery and remnants of burnt rice.

Nalanda is considered a cradle of religions – important not just for Buddhism but also Jainism, Hinduism and Sufism. Given its rich heritage and historical significance, Nalanda remains a popular tourist attraction where people can experience spirituality alongside the remnants of its glorious past.

Vaishali

Vaishali is a small town in the interior region of Bihar that holds great religious significance for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. It is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. Vaishali is also considered the world’s first republic, named after King Vishal from the Mahabharata era.

For Buddhists, Vaishali is revered as the place where Lord Buddha delivered his last sermon before attaining Nirvana. To commemorate this event, Emperor Ashoka erected one of his famous pillars here after embracing Buddhism.

Surrounded by mango and banana groves and rice fields, this historical village attracts religious pilgrims and tourists all year round. With its links to the Buddha’s life and as Mahavira’s birthplace, Vaishali is an important sacred site for both Buddhists and Jains respectively.

Madhubani

Madhubani is an ancient city in Bihar famous for its rich art and cultural heritage, especially the world-renowned Madhubani paintings that originated here. Mentioned in the Ramayana epic, this small district emerged as a separate entity from Darbhanga in 1972.

Slowly gaining popularity as a tourist destination for art enthusiasts, Madhubani is surrounded by the districts of Darbhanga to the south, Sitamarhi and Supaul on either side and borders Nepal to the north. It is also an important commercial town in the region.

While the vibrant Madhubani paintings are the prime attraction, the city has several temples that draw local devotees. With its artistic legacy, ancient roots and cultural significance, Madhubani offers visitors a glimpse into Bihar’s traditional art forms and heritage.

Muzaffarpur

Muzaffarpur, nicknamed the “Litchi Kingdom”, is a major town situated in north Bihar along the banks of the Burhi Gandak, Bagmati and Lakhandayee rivers. As the administrative headquarters of Muzaffarpur district, it is an important educational and commercial hub.

The city gets its name from a revenue officer called Muzaffar Khan. While the local language is Vajjika, Hindi is used for official purposes. Located 75 km north of Patna, Muzaffarpur is the fourth most populous city in Bihar.

It is particularly famous for its Shahi litchis. The region has cultural influences from Hinduism, Islam and Nepali traditions. The local cuisine combines Bihari and North Indian flavors, with popular dishes like kadhi bari, ghugni, choora, dhuska, litti and pittha.

With its rivers, litchi production, mixed cultural heritage and cuisine, Muzaffarpur represents the diversity of Bihar while serving as one of its major urban centres.

Bhagalpur

Bhagalpur is a historically significant city located on the southern banks of the Ganges river in Bihar. Known as the “Silk City”, it is the third-largest urban centre in the state.

Bhagalpur serves as a major educational hub as well as an important commercial and political centre. It is home to the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, which protects the Gangetic dolphin – India’s national aquatic animal.

With roots steeped in various mythologies, Bhagalpur’s history is a fascinating blend of legends waiting to be explored.

Situated around 250 km east of Patna, the state capital, the commonly spoken languages are Angika and Hindi. As a fast-developing city, Bhagalpur is on course to become one of Bihar’s smart cities.

Combining its silk heritage, mythological past, environmental initiatives and modern growth, Bhagalpur represents the diverse facets of Bihar.

With its rich history, diverse culture, and a plethora of attractions, Bihar stands as a testament to India’s enduring heritage. Whether exploring ancient ruins or admiring vibrant art forms, visitors to Bihar are sure to be captivated by its timeless charm and profound significance in India’s cultural tapestry.

This incident isn't the first time IndiGo has faced scrutiny over cleanliness concerns. In October 2022, the airline encountered a similar situation when a passenger reported spotting a cockroach inside a flight from Patna to Delhi, prompting them to take remedial action.

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, was under scrutiny after a video depicting cockroaches on one of its planes went viral on social media. The footage, which circulated widely, showcased multiple cockroaches swarming around the galley area of the aircraft, highlighting concerns about cleanliness and hygiene standards.

In response to the public outcry, IndiGo issued a statement acknowledging the video and reassuring passengers of prompt action taken by their staff. The airline asserted that upon becoming aware of the situation, they immediately initiated thorough cleaning and disinfection procedures across their entire fleet. Additionally, fumigation measures were implemented as a precautionary measure to address any potential pest-related issues.

“We are aware of the video that was circulated on social media showing an unclean corner in one of our aircraft. Our staff promptly took the necessary action onboard. As a precautionary measure, we immediately cleaned the entire fleet and carried out fumigation and disinfection procedures,” stated the airline in their official response. They further emphasized their commitment to upholding the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene to ensure passengers’ safety and comfort.

This incident isn’t the first time IndiGo has faced scrutiny over cleanliness concerns. In October 2022, the airline encountered a similar situation when a passenger reported spotting a cockroach inside a flight from Patna to Delhi, prompting them to take remedial action.

IndiGo’s reputation, known for its efficiency and reliability in the Indian aviation industry, could potentially be tarnished by such incidents. Passengers’ perceptions of the airline’s commitment to cleanliness and hygiene standards may be negatively impacted, potentially leading to a loss of trust and patronage.

As travellers prioritize safety and hygiene considerations, airlines must prioritize stringent cleanliness measures to instil confidence and maintain customer satisfaction. IndiGo’s swift response and remedial actions serve as a reminder of the critical importance of maintaining impeccable cleanliness standards in the aviation industry.

His alleged wrongdoing was detected after five individuals were arrested in the Digha police station area for their involvement with the liquor mafia

The Bihar Police has suspended one of its inspectors, Mohommad Qaisar Alam, for allegedly having a nexus with the state’s liquor mafia. Alam was posted as the Station House Officer (SHO) at the Buddha Colony police station in the city of Patna. The action was taken on the basis of a report given by Inspector General Amrit Raj.

Alam’s alleged wrongdoing was detected after five individuals were arrested in the Digha police station area for their involvement with the liquor mafia. Two SUVs and over 326 litres of alcohol were seized from them in the raid conducted on June 12.

During the investigation conducted by the Prohibition Department of the Police, it emerged that one of the accused, who had run away, was in contact with Alam and was getting protection for his illicit liquor business from the inspector. According to Patna SSP Upendra Sharma, “The SHO has been placed under suspension based on a report on his illegal activities.”

The now-suspended Bihar Police inspector has had a fair share of controversies in the past as well. In 2018, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son Tej Pratap had accused Alam of keeping a liquor bottle in his chamber and asked CM Nitish Kumar for his removal. The sale, purchase, and consumption of alcohol are banned in Bihar since April 2016 when the Bihar Excise and Prohibition Act came into effect.

An inquiry was ordered against him in May 2019 for illegally detaining a person whose vehicle had been seized for not having the required papers. He is also accused of committing the fake encounter of Mohommad Gurfan in 2002.

In the NIA reports, the terrorists planned to explode the train and cause huge fatality, there was a glass bottle kept inside the parcel which was kept inside of the train by the two brothers, the blast occurred when the parcel were being taken off the train and the explosion occurred on the platform instead of inside the train, which led to the investigation by NIA.

It had been said that Imran Malik AKA Imran Khan and his brother Mohammad Nasir Khan had planned to carry out terrorist activities across the country by terrorists from Lakshkar-e-Taiba.

Imran and Nasir had packed the explosives in a cloth parcel, the package had been sent to Datbhanga from Secunderabad on the Darbhanga Express, the motive was to cause massive loss of life and property by setting the bandwagon on fire.

After the arrest of the two terrorists, they sought help from the UP Police and based on the information provided by the NIA, police arrested Haji Salim and Kafil Ahmed who were residents if Kairana and turned them over to the NIA in the case of package explosion at Darbhanga.

Nasir Khan was arrested in 2012 in Hyderabad and was trained with Lakshar Terrorists when he traveled to Pakistan to manufacture IED’s from chemicals. Whereas Imran was in contact with Lashkar-e-Taiba.

With the SSR suicide case taking twists, Rhea's lawyer tells SC about related unfairness.

Senior Lawyer Shyam Divan who is leading Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide case on behalf of Rhea Chakraborty appealed to the Supreme Court about State Interference in the matter and pointed out about apprehension of bias in the same. “There are serious apprehensions of bias in the case. Ends of justice will be met if prayers will be allowed”, he argued. As per a report by ANI, lawyer is said to be arguing in Supreme Court over Rhea’s plea seeking the transfer of investigation case filed by Sushant’s father from Patna to Mumbai. In the SC hearing of Rhea’s petition, actress on Tuesday told the court how the FIR filed by Sushant’s father against her has no relation with any offence in Patna.

Divan mentioned about the complaint filed by Sushant’s father and argued that all the allegations which are charged are relatable to Mumbai adding how there was a delay of over 38 days in filing the FIR in Patna. By making several other statements he even asserted how due to state interference and influence might make the case biased. Divan argued that Sushant’s father is using influential relatives to ‘frame’ Rhea Chakraborty. He also suggested how the way to acquire justice in this case shall be achieved by accepting Rhea’s appeal to transfer the case from Patna to Mumbai.
