Suspected terror attack kills 10 in Pakistan market as bomb hidden in rickshaw explodes

At least 10 people, including two traffic police officials, were killed and more than 30 others injured in a powerful explosion at a crowded market in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday, authorities said, in what investigators suspect was a terrorist attack.

The blast occurred in Serai Naurang tehsil of Lakki Marwat district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. According to local officials and Pakistani media reports, explosives were allegedly planted inside a rickshaw parked in the market area before the explosion ripped through the busy commercial zone.

District Deputy Commissioner Hameedullah Khan said preliminary investigations indicated that militants had used the three-wheeler vehicle to carry out the attack. Hospital authorities confirmed that at least 10 people died in the incident while 33 others sustained injuries, several of them critically. Five injured victims were later shifted to advanced medical facilities for emergency treatment.

The two policemen killed in the explosion were identified as traffic police officials Adil Jan and Rahatullah. Rescue officials said ambulances and emergency response teams reached the scene immediately after the blast as panic spread across the market area.

Police sealed off the location soon after the incident and launched a forensic investigation. A large police contingent led by the Naurang Circle deputy superintendent of police collected evidence from the site while bomb disposal units examined the wreckage.

Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and expressed grief over the loss of lives. According to state broadcaster PTV, the Pakistani Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to “eradicating the scourge of terrorism” and ordered an inquiry into the blast.

The attack comes only days after a suicide bombing targeted the Fateh Khel police post in Bannu, killing at least 15 police personnel. Following that incident, Pakistan summoned Afghanistan’s chargé d’affaires and alleged that militants involved in the attack had links to bases operating from Afghan territory.

The latest explosion is expected to intensify security concerns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militant violence and attacks on police and security forces have increased in recent months.
