Two lawmakers from the United States of America (USA), Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib have announced that they will be boycotting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s joint congressional address during his state visit. PM Modi has been invited to speak to a joint session of the US Congress on 22nd June. Both the lawmakers gave the reason for such a decision to be the gross human rights violations in India.

Ilhan Omar announced her decision through social media and said, “Prime Minister Modi’s government has repressed religious minorities, emboldened violent Hindu nationalist groups, and targeted journalists/human rights advocates with impunity. I will NOT be attending Modi’s speech. I WILL be holding a briefing with human rights groups to discuss Modi’s record of repression and violence.” Ilhan Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives, and is the first African refugee to become a member of Congress.

Another lawmaker, Rashida Tlaib, said on Tuesday that she will be boycotting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to Congress. She tweeted, “It’s shameful that Modi has been given a platform at our nation’s capital — his long history of human rights abuses, anti-democratic actions, targeting Muslims and religious minorities, and censoring journalists is unacceptable. I will be boycotting Modi’s joint address to Congress.” Tlaib is the Congresswoman for Michigan’s 12th Congressional District.

More than 70 Democrats from both the House of Representatives and the Senate wrote a letter to President Joe Biden to discuss the need for the protection of human rights and democratic values in India as he meets with Modi. Biden will be hosting the Indian Prime Minister on Thursday, and Modi is also expected to address the US Congress.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the US’s largest Muslim advocacy group, urged the leaders of the Congress to cancel Modi’s address, earlier this month. According to them, Modi’s address “sends the message that repressing Christians, Muslims, Dalits, Sikhs and other faith minorities is not an issue for the U.S. Congress.” They also said, “Modi’s anti-democratic policies, such as smothering critical journalism, are also the opposite of what the U.S. Congress should be seen as celebrating. If the Joint Meeting occurs, we plan to urge Members to boycott it.”

A U.S. panel also recommended that the State Department designate India among others as “countries of particular concern” for violating religious freedoms.

The Donald Trump campaign released a promotional commercial featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a move to appease the Indian diaspora on Saturday. The 104-second video contains clips of events like ‘Howdy Modi’ and Namaste Trump, which had attracted sizeable viewership and support.

“America enjoys a great relationship with India and our campaign enjoys great support from Indian-Americans!” the national chair of Trump Victory Finance Committee, Kimberly Guilfoyle, tweeted while releasing the commercial titled ‘4 more years’, which has since garnered over 97,000 views.

The video starts with the ‘Howdy Modi’ event, where Modi was accompanied by Trump and greeted by over 50,000 Indian-Americans. “Mr Trump, in 2017 you had introduced me to your family, now I have the honour to introduce you to mine,” Modi said during the event, gesturing towards the audience. The next clip is from the ‘Namaste Trump’ event held in Ahmedabad and Trump is shown saying. “America respects India, and America will always be a faithful and loyal friend to the Indian people.”

The pitch is the result of recent research conducted by Al Mason, who also conceptualized the video, that pointed out that Indian-Americans who generally vote for the Democratic party have started switching to the Republican party as a result of Modi’s immense popularity and the Modi-Trump friendship.

The virtual Republican National Convention will be held next week and Trump is expected to deliver his nomination acceptance speech on 27th August in the White House Lawns.

Narendra Modi becomes longest serving non congress PM; 4th longest serving overall

NEW DELHI: Narendra Modi has become the longest serving non-Congress prime minister and the fourth longest serving overall, the party noted on Thursday.

“Today, PM Narendra Modi becomes the fourth longest serving PM in the history of India! He now also holds the distinction of being the longest serving non-Congress PM. Vajpayee ji served for 2,268 days, with all his terms put together. Today PM Modi has surpassed that duration,” BJP IT department in-charge Amit Malviya tweeted

India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was at the top in the list who served for total 6130 days. His daughter Indira Gandhi was second in the list who served for 5829 days in the office.

Congress’ Manmohan Singh became third who was ousted by Narendra Modi in 2014.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi had launched the platform for “Transparent Taxation – Honoring the Honest” via video conferencing.

The platform, which has been launched to honour the honest taxpayers of the country, will bring transparency in income tax systems and empowering taxpayers, according to the government.

In a tweet earlier in the day, PM Modi said the initiative will strengthen the Government’s efforts of reforming and simplifying the tax system and will benefit several honest taxpayers, whose hard work powers national progress.

Today, PM Narendra Modi becomes the fourth longest serving PM in the history of India!

PM Modi interacts with CMs of ten states which contributed 80% of the country’s total COVID-19 cases

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held video-conference with Chief Ministers of ten states, which have contributed 80% of the country’s total number of Coronavirus cases thus far, remarking that the country will win its battle against COVID-19 if the infection is defeated in these ten states.

Notably, today’s meeting was attended by the Chief Ministers of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, Bihar, Gujarat and Punjab. Karnataka, meanwhile, was represented by its Deputy Chief Minister as CM BS Yediyurappa has just recovered from Coronavirus

“Every state is fighting the battle against the challenging situation arising due to COVID-19 pandemic. Role of each and every state is very significant in overall control of the spread of the disease”, the Prime Minister told the attending Chief Ministers.

He added that the average fatality rate decreasing and the average recovery rate increasing everyday showed that the steps taken by the country were in the right direction.

“Experts are saying now that if within 72 hours, a person is diagnosed, then the spread can be controlled to a great extent. So, it is important that all the people who come in contact with an infected person must be tested within 72 hours”, PM Modi suggested to the Chief Ministers.

He then spoke about the ten states which had contributed over 80% of the country’s COVID-19 cases thus far, remarking that they had a major role to play in the country’s battle against Coronavirus.

“Today, the country has over over six lakh active cases, most of which are from these ten states”, he added.

“We have seen that in some districts of UP, Haryana and Delhi, there was a phase when COVID-19 became a huge problem. Then we held a review meeting and a committee was formed under the chairmanship of Amit Shah and to a great extent, we achieved the results that we wanted”, the Prime Minister remarked further.

Notably, this was PM Modi’s seventh interaction with the Chief Ministers on the country’s Coronavirus situation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was also present at today’s meeting.

India’s current overall COVID-19 tally stands at 22,68,676 after a spike of 53,601 in the last 24 hour. The country’s recovery rate currently stands at 69.79%.

PM Modi ‘s visit comes only one day after Defense Minister Rajnath Singh canceled his visit to Ladakh.The visit comes in the midst of India’s rising tensions over the previous few days with China and Chinese troop deployments at the LAC that led to a confrontation between the armies of the two countries leading to casualties on both sides.
