Singhi. Senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and representatives of national trader associations attended the session, which focused on regulatory reforms, inclusive trade policies, and digital empowerment for small traders and retailers.

The Chairperson welcomed the passage of the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, highlighting that the law will promote ease of doing business by removing criminal penalties for minor procedural lapses and replacing them with graded, non‑custodial enforcement mechanisms. The amendment, which amends 79 central laws and over 780 provisions across 23 ministries, is being presented as a measure to reduce compliance burden for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and traders.

In the area of digital empowerment, a detailed presentation was made by the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) team, outlining how the platform can help traders, especially small and medium businesses, access broader digital markets, logistics support, and payment solutions. The ONDC pitch emphasized the role of interoperable e‑commerce infrastructure in enabling price discovery, reducing customer acquisition costs, and integrating local shops into a pan‑India digital marketplace.

Board members were urged to carry these messages to trade bodies across India so that a wider spectrum of small traders can benefit from simplified compliance and digital‑commerce opportunities under current government initiatives.

The device, roughly the size of a ballpoint pen, is equipped with a nozzle as fine as a human hair. This design ensures precise and comfortable drug delivery.

Needles are a source of anxiety for many, particularly for patients requiring frequent injections for chronic conditions like diabetes. Offering a potential breakthrough, researchers at IIT Bombay have developed a needle-free syringe, delivering drugs painlessly and safely using shockwave technology.

The innovative device, led by Prof. Viren Menezes from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, employs high-energy shock waves to create a microjet of liquid medication. This microjet penetrates the skin at nearly twice the speed of a commercial airplane during takeoff, ensuring minimal trauma and almost painless delivery.

How It Works

The device, roughly the size of a ballpoint pen, is equipped with a nozzle as fine as a human hair. This design ensures precise and comfortable drug delivery.

In laboratory tests on rats, the shock syringe demonstrated significant advantages:

Anesthetics: Matched needles effectively, acting within 3–5 minutes and lasting 20–30 minutes.

Viscous Drugs: Enhanced absorption by reaching deeper skin layers.

Insulin Delivery: Maintained stable blood sugar levels for longer durations.

Additionally, tissue analysis showed faster healing and reduced inflammation than traditional injections, suggesting the syringe’s suitability for repeated use.

Future Applications

This innovation holds great promise for vaccination campaigns, especially for children, and reduces the risk of infections from needle-related injuries. With over 1,000 successful uses in tests, the device offers a cost-effective solution, requiring only periodic nozzle replacements.

While further development and regulatory approvals are needed, the shock syringe could soon transform medical practices, making injections pain-free and safer for patients worldwide.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the crucial role of the cooperative sector in shaping a resilient economy and driving rural development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several key initiatives during a ceremony held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi today, which indeed marks a significant movie aimed at boosting the cooperative sector in India. The event, which commenced at 10:30 am, marks a pivotal step towards enhancing food security, driving economic development, and fostering good governance within the cooperative domain.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the crucial role of the cooperative sector in shaping a resilient economy and driving rural development. He underscored the sentiment that cooperation transcends mere structure, embodying a profound ethos and spirit.

“The cooperative sector possesses the transformative potential to convert rudimentary subsistence systems into robust industrial capacities,” remarked Prime Minister Modi, highlighting its indispensable role in rejuvenating India’s rural and agricultural economy.

A landmark initiative unveiled during the ceremony is the pilot project for the ‘World’s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector.’ Spanning 11 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) across 11 states, this pioneering endeavor aims to integrate PACS godowns seamlessly into the food grain supply chain. Endorsed by NABARD and spearheaded by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), the initiative leverages convergence with existing schemes such as the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) and Agriculture Marketing Infrastructure (AMI) to bolster food security and drive economic growth.

In addition to the grain storage plan, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the expansion of PACS and agricultural infrastructure. This initiative entails the establishment of an additional 500 PACS nationwide, facilitating the construction of godowns and other essential agricultural infrastructure. Through collaborative efforts, participating PACS stand to benefit from subsidies and interest subvention under existing schemes, reaffirming the commitment to integrate PACS into the broader agricultural framework for enhanced efficiency and efficacy.

Furthermore, in alignment with the government’s vision of “Sahakar se Samridhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation), Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a project aimed at the digital transformation of 18,000 PACS nationwide. With a substantial financial outlay exceeding Rs 2,500 crore, this initiative entails the transition of functional PACS onto a unified Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) based national software. By establishing connectivity between PACS, NABARD, State Cooperative Banks, and District Central Cooperative Banks, the project endeavors to bolster operational efficiency and governance, thereby benefiting millions of small and marginal farmers across the country.

Nevertheless, the initiatives launched and inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi depicts the government’s dedidcation as well as the commitment to fortify the cooperative sector, elevate agricultural infrastructure, and empower rural communities. With a strategic focus on collaboration, innovation, and digitalization, these initiatives are expected to chart a transformative trajectory towards a more inclusive and prosperous future for India’s cooperative sector and agricultural landscape in the near future.

On February 24th, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several initiatives aimed at revitalizing the cooperative sector in India. The event, scheduled to commence at 10:30 AM at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, marks a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to bolstering agricultural infrastructure and empowering small and marginal farmers across the country.

One of the key highlights of the event is the inauguration of the pilot project for the ‘World’s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector.’ This initiative encompasses 11 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) spanning 11 states, aiming to establish a seamless integration of PACS godowns with the food grain supply chain. By fortifying food security and enhancing economic development, this project, supported by NABARD and spearheaded by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring agricultural prosperity.

In addition, Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone for an additional 500 PACS across the nation, earmarked for the construction of godowns and other agricultural infrastructure. Aligned with the government’s vision of “Sahakar se Samridhi,” this initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and governance by transitioning all functional PACS onto a unified Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) based national software. Developed by NABARD, the National Level Common Software promises to revolutionize the functioning of PACS, enabling seamless integration and connectivity with state and district-level cooperative banks.

With a financial outlay exceeding Rs 2,500 crore, these initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to revitalizing the cooperative sector and empowering farmers across the length and breadth of the nation. As Prime Minister Modi inaugurates and lays the foundation stone for these monumental projects, the cooperative sector embarks on a new trajectory of growth, resilience, and prosperity.

Amid current discussions in the agricultural sector, Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda highlights the need for the government and farmers to keep working together to find a compromise on outstanding concerns and to ensure farmers' welfare.

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda stressed the importance of further efforts from the government and farmers to reach an agreement on important issues in a statement released on Thursday. Munda stated that additional work is needed to address unresolved issues and come to a mutually agreeable conclusion despite multiple rounds of meetings.

The progress in the current negotiations with farmers has been satisfactory, according to Munda, who said, “Meaningful talks have been held in the several rounds of discussions with farmers.” He did, however, draw attention to the need for persistent efforts on all sides to find common ground on some divisive matters.

The federal government’s steadfast commitment to giving farmers’ welfare and interests top priority was emphasised by the minister of agriculture. Munda emphasised, “The Government of India is committed to working for the interest of farmers, and it is doing that,” restating the administration’s resolve to deal with the issues brought up by the farming community.

A focal point against the backdrop of recent agricultural changes has been the ongoing talks between the government and farmers. Although there has been some progress, there are still disagreements on several matters, which calls for more communication and cooperation.

The farming community can feel reassured by Munda’s statement, which highlights the government’s commitment to finding cooperative solutions that are advantageous to all parties involved. Both parties’ recognition of the need for more effort on both ends shows a dedication to candid dialogue and teamwork in resolving the issues facing the farm industry.

Addressing the enthusiastic gathering, Modi drew attention to a recent statement by Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, inadvertently bolstering the prospect of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) clinching over 400 seats.

In a rousing address at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) National Convention held at New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi rallied party members, expressing unwavering confidence in securing a resounding victory in the imminent Lok Sabha elections. Emphasizing the transformative agenda of his government, Modi urged BJP workers to redouble their efforts towards propelling India into the league of developed nations.

Addressing the enthusiastic gathering, Modi drew attention to a recent statement by Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, inadvertently bolstering the prospect of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) clinching over 400 seats. “Even the opposition leaders are conceding victory to the NDA, with projections surpassing 400 seats,” remarked Modi, signaling a wave of optimism within the party ranks.

However, Modi acknowledged the formidable task ahead, noting that to achieve such a feat, the BJP would need to cross the historic milestone of 370 seats. Undeterred by the challenge, Modi underscored the pivotal role of the forthcoming elections in shaping India’s trajectory over the next five years. “Our vision is to propel India towards development, and the next five years are critical in realizing this aspiration,” affirmed Modi, rallying his audience with a call to action for the upcoming electoral battle.

In a bid to galvanize party members, Modi outlined a comprehensive strategy for the ensuing 100 days, urging them to engage with every segment of society and garner trust across the nation. “We are not here merely for politics but to serve the nation,” reiterated Modi, underscoring the BJP’s commitment to inclusive governance and socio-economic progress.

Reflecting on his government’s accomplishments, Modi touted the eradication of corruption and terrorism, alongside initiatives aimed at uplifting the underprivileged and expanding the middle class. Highlighting his administration’s proactive engagement on the global stage, Modi reiterated his unwavering resolve, encapsulated in the slogan, “Aayega to Modi hi” (Modi will prevail).

The BJP’s National Convention also witnessed the passage of significant resolutions, including the endorsement of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (advanced India) and reaffirmation of the commitment to the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. BJP National President JP Nadda echoed Modi’s optimism, urging party workers to surpass the 370-seat mark in the upcoming elections.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed the sentiments of confidence, predicting a resounding mandate for the NDA, with Modi at the helm for a third consecutive term. Shah rebuked the opposition, accusing them of tarnishing India’s democratic fabric and perpetuating corruption and nepotism.

Therefore, as the political landscape intensifies ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi’s rallying cry at the BJP National Convention underscores the party’s determination to secure a decisive victory and propel India towards a future of prosperity and progress.

Expected to span five days, the upcoming round of negotiations follows the conclusion of the sixth round in Brussels on October 27, 2023.

New Delhi is set to host the commencement of the seventh round of negotiations between India and the European Union (EU) regarding a free trade agreement (FTA) on Monday. Alongside discussions on the FTA, talks will also encompass an investment protection agreement (IPA) and an agreement on geographical indications (GIs).

Expected to span five days, the upcoming round of negotiations follows the conclusion of the sixth round in Brussels on October 27, 2023. The preceding discussions delved into policy areas concerning goods and government procurement offers, with the seventh round anticipated to extend its focus to include services and investment.

Chief negotiators from both sides laid the groundwork for the upcoming talks through meetings in Brussels and New Delhi, paving the way for substantive discussions. While previous rounds covered significant ground on matters related to goods and public procurement, the forthcoming negotiations are poised to address remaining complexities and advance mutual interests.

Despite the complexities involved, negotiations have progressed steadily, with both parties engaging constructively over the past few months to reconcile disparities and set the stage for the seventh round. Technical sessions during the sixth round spanned various policy areas and chapters, totaling 71 sessions conducted in-person and virtually.

However, the road to a finalized agreement remains challenging, particularly given the impending general elections in India and European Parliament polls. Despite mutual interest in advancing the deal, a breakthrough may be delayed until after these electoral processes.

One contentious issue revolves around the EU’s proposal to implement a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on imports, including those from India. India staunchly opposes this move, emphasizing its commitment to environmental protection but resisting the integration of such measures into trade agreements.

As negotiations proceed, India is actively preparing its industries to embrace sustainable practices, such as the production of green steel, cement, and hydrogen. Meanwhile, the EU’s demands include the removal of trade barriers for smaller European firms and access to India’s services and public procurement markets, all negotiated with a focus on reciprocity and equity.

Recognizing the differences between micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in both regions, negotiators are mindful of protecting India’s MSMEs, agriculture, and dairy sectors during discussions. India, as the world’s fifth-largest economy, is committed to safeguarding the interests of its vulnerable farming community, viewing farming as essential for subsistence rather than solely for profit.

Unlike recent FTAs with other nations, the proposed agreement with the EU is notably comprehensive, given the size and scope involved. With 27 member countries in the EU and a broad range of subjects under negotiation, finalizing the pact is expected to require more time and intricate deliberations.

The resumption of bilateral negotiations in 2022, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in a leaders’ meeting hosted by the EU in May 2021, signifies a renewed commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties between India and the EU. Despite the challenges ahead, both sides remain determined to navigate complexities and achieve a mutually beneficial agreement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the office bearers during the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) two-day national council meet in New Delhi, articulated a bold ambition: winning 370 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming election. He framed this electoral goal as a homage to the late Syama Prasad Mookerjee, highlighting his pivotal role in advocating for the annulment of Article 370.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a stalwart of the Indian political landscape, spearheaded the campaign against Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This provision, a longstanding bone of contention, was eventually revoked through parliamentary action in 2019—a milestone celebrated by the BJP. Modi underscored the significance of Mookerjee’s legacy, positioning the attainment of 370 seats as a testament to his vision and sacrifice.

In his directive to party members, Modi emphasized the imperative of weaving the BJP’s Lok Sabha campaign around its pro-poor initiatives and the nation’s strides in development and global stature. He laid out a strategic imperative for the cadre: ensuring a minimum addition of 370 votes at each polling booth. Furthermore, he urged outreach efforts targeting first-time voters, emphasizing the transformative changes witnessed in India since 2014.

The Prime Minister cautioned against succumbing to negative campaign narratives orchestrated by the opposition, urging the party to steer clear of unnecessary distractions. Additionally, he underscored the BJP’s governance record, characterizing it as untainted by corruption or malpractice—a distinction that merits amplification in the public discourse.

Vinod Tawde, the BJP’s national general secretary, briefed the media on the PM’s directives. He underscored the party’s commitment to highlighting its corruption-free governance and development-oriented agenda. Tawde also outlined forthcoming initiatives, including a campaign to engage beneficiaries of central government schemes starting from February 25.

As part of its outreach strategy, the BJP plans to table resolutions for discussion and passage, focusing on themes such as “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India), “Modi Guarantee,” and the rallying cry of “Phir Ek Baar Modi Sarkar” (Once Again, Modi Government).

The BJP’s ambitious electoral target, framed as a tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s legacy, underscores the party’s determination to consolidate its mandate and reaffirm its commitment to transformative governance. With the elections looming on the horizon, the BJP appears poised to leverage its track record and ideological clarity to mobilize support and secure a resounding mandate.

Barricades and tear gas are being used to stop farmers as they march towards New Delhi. Tensions are exacerbated by unmet demands for higher support costs, loan forgiveness, and unfulfilled government pledges. Protesters want a peaceful conclusion.

After ineffective discussions with the government, thousands of farmers were marching towards New Delhi, and tensions erupted close to the Indian capital as security forces used tear gas to scatter them. About 200 kilometres north of the city, in the Ambala region, protesters encountered a forceful police response as they demanded more help and promises.

Police erected barriers of barbed wire, spikes, and cement blocks to obstruct several entry points into New Delhi. Huge gatherings were outlawed in the city, while internet access was cut off in several areas of the nearby state of Haryana.

A farmer group leader named Sarwan Singh Pandher explained why the demonstrators were reluctant to breach barricades and stressed their wish for a peaceful conclusion. He did, however, emphasise their necessity if the government failed to join to their requests.

On Monday, union officials and government ministers were unable to agree on several important demands made by farmers, such as increased support prices, crop price guarantees, loan forgiveness, and other concessions. Pandher charged that the government had broken its pledge to double farmers’ incomes three years prior.

The sheer volume of tractors—hundreds of them—moving from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh towards the capital highlighted the political clout of farmers. Protests are once again a possibility ahead of the anticipated April start of the national elections.

On Republic Day in 2021, farmers broke over barriers and entered the city as part of a similar “Chalo Delhi” march. There were at least 700 casualties and the establishment of improvised camps as a result of this year-long protest against an agricultural reform law that presented a serious threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

Three controversial rules that farmers claimed would give private corporations power over the agriculture industry were overturned by Modi’s government in response to the intense outcry. It was agreed to set up a panel of government representatives and farmers to discuss support prices for all farm produce. Subsequent sessions, although, have not produced any results.

With roughly a fifth of the country’s GDP coming from agriculture, which employs two-thirds of the workforce, climate change is making matters worse for the sector. Many appeals for broad government support have been made again as thousands of farmers perish from debt, poverty, and crop failure.

The Indian footwear and leather industry was given a lot of attention by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who emphasized its importance as a substantial source of foreign exchange. He emphasized the industry’s labor-intensive nature during the India International Footwear Fair 2023 (IIFF), which was hosted in New Delhi, pointing out that it creates employment prospects for almost 4.5 million people, 40% of whom are women. Goyal expressed the utmost faith in India’s ability to become the world leader in the production of premium footwear. India is the second-largest exporter of leather clothing, third-largest exporter of saddlery & harnesses, and fourth-largest exporter of leather items in the world, he noted, drawing attention to India’s remarkable rankings.

The minister also emphasized the significant fact that the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) is in charge of overseeing over 95% of the production facilities in this sector.

According to Goyal, Indian shoe sizes will soon be introduced in order to distinguish Indian footwear internationally and lessen reliance on foreign sizing trends. As part of India’s growth plans for leather and footwear, the minister said that testing facilities will be developed by the government. Goyal urged the parties involved to grow the company while maintaining a commitment to environmental responsibility, eco-friendly operations, waste management, and the investigation of renewable energy sources.

According to him, organizations like CLRI, FDDI, and NIFT will work with the market to produce new goods and technologies that are in line with the shifting trends and demands of the market.

The DCP mentioned that there was only one staircase in the factory and poor ventilation, and that the cause of the fire was ascertained. Howsoever there were only flammable materials like plastic covers, shoe boxes, and he said that anything could have caused the fire.

On Monday morning, a fire broke out a shoe factory in the Outer Delhi’s Udyog Nagar. Six workers were rescued from the site however six remained missing. The MCD officials have declared the building dangerous. The Police have filed a case against the owner of the factory who has run away, under IPC section 308.

The fire occurred around 8 am and 23 fire tenders had rushed to the spot. Nine more fire tenders were sent on seeing the intensity of the fire. It took hours before the fire was under control. Until 6 pm the cooling operations were on as the smoke was still coming out of the building. Atul Garg, the Delhi Fire Services Chief had said that they received the call at 8:22 am and rushed over the spot with 33 fire tenders, the fire blaze had spread to the upper floors of the factory, and no casualties had been reported so far, the fire was completely under control while the cooling and search operations continued. However the building had been declared dangerous by the MCD.

The police mentioned that the missing people had been identified as Neeraj, Shamshad, Raju, Vikram, Abhishek, and Ajay.

Parvinder Singh, the DCP outer district, said that there were 12 people trapped inside of the building and they first rescued four people and then two more. The search operations for the remaining six was going on. The flames spread as the building was filled with shoes and slippers, the fire was brought under control after six hours or more.

The entry was done by the officers as there were chances of the building to collapse, an officer said at the spot. He also said that in the start, the firemen tried to enter the first floor through a ladder and then later in the afternoon, a skylift crane helped the officers in reaching the third floor, luckily no bodies had been found.

The cause of the blaze was still uncertain, the officials however suspect a short circuit to be the cause of this incident.

The DCP mentioned that there was only one staircase in the factory and poor ventilation, and that the cause of the fire was ascertained. Howsoever there were only flammable materials like plastic covers, shoe boxes, and he said that anything could have caused the fire.

Delhi likely to be under curfew for seven days and the announcement for same is expected shortly, reports ANI.

The Delhi government will likely extend the weekend lockdown as the national capital has been reporting a record surge in daily Coronavirus cases.

Delhi has been reporting its biggest single-day Covid numbers for the last few days amid the rapid second wave of infections. On Friday, it recorded 24,000 new Coronavirus cases. It also logged its highest-single day death count. Delhi’s positivity rate reached a whopping 24 per cent on Friday.

Last week, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced Delhi would remain shut this weekend to “break the chain of transmission”.

Mr Kejriwal on Friday said that, “The rapidly increasing caseload had been exerting tremendous pressure on the national capital’s health infrastructure.”

“The situation is very serious and worrisome. Cases have gone up really fast. That is why we are facing shortages even though everything seemed under control until a few days ago. But the speed at which this corona is growing, no one knows where its peak will be,” he said in a virtual address.

Mr Kejriwal said the national capital had been experiencing shortages of hospital beds, drugs and medical oxygen.

“Any health infrastructure has limitations. The government is trying its best to increase the number of beds. I hope that we will be able to add 6,000 more beds in the next two to four days,” he added.

On the occasion of 73rd Army Day, Army Chief General MM Naravane, on Friday, said a “befitting reply was given” to an attempt to change the “status quo on borders” and that the sacrifice of “Galwan Bravehearts” would not go in vain. We are committed to finding the resolution of our disputes through discussions and political efforts but no one should commit the mistake of testing our patience while commenting on the Galwan dispute.

He also added by saying that ceasefire violations by Pakistan went up to 44 per cent in the year 2020. Around 300-400 terrorists are sitting in training camps near the border to infiltrate into the Indian territory. The army eliminated over 200 terrorists in cross-border operations last year.

Indian Army paid tribute to the soldiers at the National War Memorial in Delhi. Along with the Army Chief, among those present were CDS General Bipin Rawat, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria, and Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh.

A homage was paid to the soldiers by whose sacrifice in the line of duty inspires us to rededicate ourselves with renewed vigour by Chief of Defence Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat.

The Army Day is celebrated every year on January 15 since 1949, when Field Marshal Kodandera M Cariappa took over from General Sir Francis Butcher to become the Indian Army’s first Commander-in-Chief. The day has been observed as Army Day to recognise this and to acknowledge the achievements and risks undertaken by Indian army personnel.

Today, Kirin Holdings the Japanese beer brewers announced to invest $30 million in New Delhi based B9 Beverages, manufacturers of popular Bira 91. The company seeks to secure a spot in India’s growing craft beer market amid falling sales at home.

As reported by Reuters, a Kirin spokesman and Bira CEO Ankur Jain said, that the Japanese brewer will acquire a stake of under 10% in B9. They declined to give further financial details.

B9 Beverages had been in talks with international brewers and other investors to sell a stake of up to 20% in the company, Reuters reported in the month of August.

Bira was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and have reported losses in recent years, the investment will hence allow the independent brewing company to break even in the fiscal year 2021-22, Ankur Jain told Reuters.

“The companies will be exploring business synergies,” Jain said, adding that the investment would allow Bira to accelerate plans to launch its products in Japan later this year.

Jain added that he expects the deal to be closed over “the next few days” and that talks were also underway with a view to selling a further 10% stake in Bira to financial investors.

Bira launched in the year 2015 holds around 5-10% share of the beer market in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Kirin meanwhile has historically shown interest in independent breweries and owns a minority stake in New York’s Brooklyn Brewery.

PitchBook an independent data provider reported that Bira was valued at USD 210 million in 2018. US-based Sequoia Capital holds a roughly 45% stake in the company, while CEO Ankur Jain and his family own around 30%.

Craft beer sales are on the rise in India as younger, affluent consumers in big cities choose brands and pubs that make lighter brews and promise fresher ingredients.

Latest reports in financial and other media have said that Deepika Padukone’s brand value has greatly suffered after her so-called...

Latest reports in financial and other media have said that Deepika Padukone’s brand value has greatly suffered after her so-called ‘PR stunt’ showing solidarity with protesting students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, just before the release of her new film Chhapaak.

They add that Chhapaak has failed at the box-office following the widespread #BoycottChhapaak call on social media. Buzz has it that certain brands are reducing the visibility of ads featuring Deepika. However, Bollywood’s only PR guru Dale Bhagwagar strongly disagrees with these reports.

“Though Bollywood and activism are best kept apart, I do not agree that Deepika’s brand will severely be dented in the long run. If she handles her appearances well, it will not even take the public two-three weeks to move on. Deepika will bounce back,” says the Bollywood publicist.

However he analyses that some firms may take some time to come to terms with the recent developments. “The corporate world is not as chilled out as Bollywood. The film industry can take controversies in their stride and move on pretty fast. But for the ad world, turnarounds have to be handled deftly and delicately,” Dale points out.

“Having said that, it does not mean Deepika’s fortunes will dwindle. While many of the existing corporate brands should stay loyal, it is possible that her portfolio of endorsements may look a little different in future. Not small; just different.”

Much will depend on how she handles the crisis management part from here, opines the PR expert. “After the Chhapaak controversy, Deepika was seen handing out award trophies to photographers at the Press Club in Mumbai, celebrating milestones achieved by INOX and also at promotions of the Salman Khan-hosted reality show Bigg Boss. That’s already a fresh start.”

However, we wonder if cozying up to media by handing out award trophies would help her tainted brand. Though we secretly wish that Dale’s words are proven right. After all, we want to see more of Deepika’s powerhouse performances including her glowing face and sparkling smile.
