‘Ban NEET’: DMK launches signature campaign, CM MK Stalin makes first sign

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s son and Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Saturday launched a campaign to obtain 50 lakh signatures in 50 days to shut the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical aspirants.

In a social media post on X, Junior Stalin wrote: “The massive signature movement launched today. Hon’ble Chief Minister was the first representative of Tamil Nadu to sign the sentiment of our people. Thanks to him. Let’s take part in this massive signature movement to abolish NEET to create a NEET-free Tamil Nadu – protect the right to education of Tamil Nadu students.”

The DMK leader used an egg as his prop to support his point with ‘NEET’ written on it with a red marker. The Egg here symbolizes ‘Zero’, commonly known as muttai in the local language.

“At the inaugural event of this signature movement, we addressed the atrocities of those who imposed NEET on the grounds of ‘merit – quality’ and today say ‘0’ percentile in NEET PG exam is enough. In order to urge the President to give approval to the NEET Exemption Bill, we will go around to every nook and cranny of Tamilnadu’s colleges, schools, towns and streets and collect the signatures of the people of Tamilnadu,” said Udhayanidhi Stalin.

“We request all party friends, public from all parties, to participate in this signature drive to express their opinion against NEET exam,” added Udhayanidhi Stalin.

After signing the petition against NEET exam, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin said that “NEET expulsion is our only goal”.

SC dismisses plea to postpone NEET (PG): “Will impact patient care”

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the plea to postpone NEET (PG) exam. A bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud heard the case and came to the conclusion that postponing the exam will create chaos and impact patient care adversely.

The bench also noted that postponing the exam will be a prejudice to the students who have registered. They also mentioned that time must be adhered to as the country is coming back on track after Covid-19

The petitioners argued that as the counseling of NEET (PG) 2021 is still going on, the exam should be postponed to make it fairer. They also argued that some doctors didn’t even apply for NEET (PG) 2022 as they hoped to get a seat in AIQ-Mop Up, which got canceled on 31-03-2022 while the closing date of NEET was 25-03-2022.

NEET(PG)- 2021 was also postponed

This is the second consecutive year that NEET (PG) is becoming a bone of contention between students and the government. Last year NEET (PG) 2021 was postponed to September 2021, from its original date of April 2021. Its counseling was delayed due to a case in Supreme Court regarding EWS-OBC reservation in the all-India quota.

In January 2022, the Supreme Court gave the signal to the counseling process based on the existing criteria of reservations. The counseling was scheduled to wrap on 9th May 2022. The petitioners are pointing out this small time frame as unfair.

Opposition by other students

A large section of students who also protested feels that this postponement will push the academic year further. The post-graduate students apart from their classes also work in hospitals associated with their colleges as part of their training.

The repeated postponements result in gaps in the academic year, which further leads to either lack of doctors or an overburden of junior residents.

NEET UG and PG counselling 21-2022 to be held in four rounds

Medical Counselling Committee of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India has decided to conduct the counselling for 15 per cent UG and 50 per cent seats for all India quota for the current academic year 2021-2022 onwards.

All the four rounds for NEET – Undergraduate and Post Graduate have been approved by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and the Govt. of India issued from time to time. The proposed round will be held online with the prevailing norms of the COVID-19 outbreak and this should be followed by the participating central Institutes/Universities.

The Key Features of the scheme are:

There will be 04 rounds of Online Counselling i.e AIQ Round 1, AIQ Round 2, AIQ Mop-up Round and AIQ Stray Vacancy Round and fresh registrations will be allowed in these rounds except in the AIQ Stray Vacancy round.
The seats which were earlier reverted to respective states after the completion of Round 2 will continue to be filled in by the respective authorities in online mode.
There will be an option for candidates to upgrade and exit only in round 1 of the AIQ counselling while there will not be an option of up-gradation to Mop-up round from round 2.
Candidates who have joined the further round of counselling will not be allowed to resign and will also be ineligible to take part in further rounds.
Candidates who have not joined the allotted seats in round 2 will be allowed to exit freely from the counselling.
