It looks like OTT giant Netflix would clearly emerge to be the winner of this year’s content competition amongst the other web platforms with its stellar line up of films and web shows. With the announcement of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, the OTT giant has added another feather to its cap.

On 24 December 1999, Indian Airlines flight IC 814, en route from Kathmandu to New Delhi, was hijacked and taken to Kandahar in Taliban-governed Afghanistan. The hijack lasted seven days; while passengers and crew suffered, some great officers back home struggled to answer the ‘who’ and ‘why’ – answers that were beyond the obvious and extremely complex. But the people had to be brought back home safely. The clock was ticking as the negotiations forged through; this is the story of those seven days which became the longest hijack in Indian history.

Well , not just the crux of the story is interesting, what is even more interesting is the stellar cast that has been roped in to play different characters in the web film. The cast includes stalwarts like Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma, Arvind Swamy, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Diya Mirza, Patralekha, Yashpal Sharma, Yashpal Singh and the list goes on.

Director and co-creator of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, Anubhav Sinha, said, “You are thirty thousand feet from the ground; the aircraft is in control by armed and dangerous people, and you don’t know what they want. You don’t know if they can be given what they want to spare your lives. You don’t know the lengths that people on the ground will go to, to negotiate a reasonable price for your lives. What went on inside the aircraft and outside, beyond geographical boundaries, while the aircraft landed in four different countries over one night? IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a verisimilar account of that infamous hijack from 1999 inside the aircraft, the War Room back home in Delhi and the Negotiation Station in Kandahar. The much-awaited trailer for Karan Johar’s online series Showtime has finally been released. The film, which stars Emraan Hashmi, Mouni Roy, Shriya Saran, Mahima Makwana, Mouni Roy, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rajeev Khandelwal, is said to be about nepotism.

Dharmatic Entertainment produces the upcoming show, which was created by Sumit Roy and showrunner Mihir Desai. Desai and Archit Kumar co-direct.

“Showtime” is described as an epic saga of legacy and ambition in the world of film. It will provide an inside look at “what goes behind the multi-million dollar industry of Bollywood, nepotism, and power struggles at the top,” according to a press release from the producers.

The show is Hashmi’s second web series, following Netflix’s “Bard of Blood” (2019).

The “Tiger 3” star said he grabbed the opportunity of being a part of “Showtime” as it resonated with the story on various levels.

“We have always seen the audience longing to know more about what goes on behind the closed doors of Bollywood and let me just say – we have heard you all! Get ready to dive deep into the tales of Bollywood,” Hashmi said in a statement.

Showtime’ is a unique and engaging series that will look into the world of Bollywood, production houses, and how they operate, according to Apoorva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions and Dharmatic.

Gaurav Banerjee, head of content, Disney+ Hotstar & HSM Entertainment Network, Disney Star, said, “Collaborating with Dharmatic Entertainment has always been a great experience and the success of ‘Koffee with Karan’ stands as a testament to that. The next story we wanted to tell was about Bollywood and the trade secrets, so who better than Karan Johar, who has been the heart of the industry and also the centre of conversations around nepotism.”

“Showtime” will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar in March 8, starring Rajeev Khandelwal and Shriya Saran in important roles.

On Thursday (1 February), the makers of Emraan Hashmi, Mouni Roy, and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah’s ‘Showtime’ released their interesting posters on Instagram, streaming platform Disney + Hotstar presented fans with intense-looking posters.

Emraan Hashmi, Mahima Makwana, Mouni Roy, Naseeruddin Shah, Rajeev Khandelwal, Vijay Raaz, and Shriya Saran are among the celebrities featured in the posters.

Sharing the posters, they wrote, “They are here to steal the show! It’s Showtime.#HotstarSpecials #Showtime coming soon. #ShowtimeOnHotstar.” As soon as the posters were uploaded, fans and industry members flooded the comment section.

Vishal Bhardwaj, a multifaceted artist encompassing filmmaking, writing, and musicianship, has collaborated with some of Bollywood’s most illustrious luminaries, including the esteemed actor Naseeruddin Shah. Bhardwaj shares a close-knit rapport with Shah, harking back to their early days when they shared moments of recreation and camaraderie. In a recent interview, Bhardwaj recollected an incident where he inadvertently broke the seasoned actor’s nose a mere day before a crucial shoot.

In a candid conversation on “Unfiltered with Samdish,” director Vishal Bhardwaj delved into his profound connection with Naseeruddin Shah. Casting our minds back in time, Bhardwaj unveiled a memorable episode that left the venerable actor in a profuse bout of bleeding. He narrated the story of a spirited cricket match, where Shah assumed the role of wicketkeeper, and he himself took center stage as the star bowler. Bhardwaj explained that during the game, he would unfailingly provide a warning to Shah whenever he geared up to deliver a rapid bowl.

Yet, on that fateful day, Naseeruddin Shah seemingly failed to heed the caution. Consequently, when Bhardwaj released the ball, it struck the actor’s nose directly. The celebrated “Ishqiya” actor crumpled to the ground, and his pristine white shirt became a canvas for the crimson torrent of blood. Bhardwaj recollected, “They were escorting him out, and he was consistently showering me with expletives. He exclaimed, ‘I have a shoot tomorrow,’ venting his frustration. It was in the heat of the moment. Ice was applied, and he eventually recovered.”

Furthermore, Bhardwaj divulged that post the incident, the renowned screenwriter and film director, Gulzar, ventured onto the tennis court after an absence of three decades. There, he happened upon Naseeruddin Shah’s son, Imaad. Unexpectedly, Naseeruddin reached out to Bhardwaj the following morning. “I believed he would reprimand me once again (for the broken nose),” Bhardwaj confessed.

Naseeruddin did reproach him, but not for his own blunder. He vented his ire at Gulzar for unintentionally inflicting injury upon his son. Bhardwaj further recounted, “He said, ‘Do you and Gulzar saab have some kind of vendetta?’ I inquired, ‘What occurred?’ He explained, ‘Both of you seem to be after my family.’ Then he disclosed, ‘Gulzar saab went to Khar today and hurled a ball, inadvertently breaking Imaad’s nose.'”

He went on to say, “These trophies hold no real significance for me anymore. Initially, I was thrilled to receive them, but soon they started piling up around me. I realized that these awards are often the outcome of lobbying and not necessarily based on merit. That’s when I decided to leave them behind. However, when I received the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards, it reminded me of my late father who used to worry about my career and would say things like, ‘If you pursue this useless profession, you’ll become a fool.’ So, when I went to Rashtrapati Bhavan to collect those awards, I looked up and imagined my father watching. I’m sure he was happy, and I was content. But I simply can’t stand these competitive awards anymore.”

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah recalled his conversating with the late actor Irrfan Khan. Before the star’s death in April 200, Naseeruddin Shah said in a new interview, that Irrfan knew that it is going to happen for about two years.

Irrfan Khan and Naseeruddin Shah have worked in several films together including Magbool(2003),7 Khoon Maaf (2011) among many others. Irrfan Khan passed away at the age of 53 last year, battling a long fight with cancer.

Naseeruddin Shah spoke on Irrfan Khan’s death in an interview with Indian Express; he says, “That was unique because Irrfan knew for about two years that it was going to happen. I spoke to him several times over the phone even when he was in the hospital in London. It was amazing and it was a real lesson on how we deal with it. I remember, he would say:’I am observing death approaching me, and how many people get that opportunity? To be able to see grim reaper coming towards you and you are almost welcoming him’.Of course, it was a terrible loss. But it was not in our hands. It was just bodily machinery shutting down. You don’t have any control over it.”

The veteran actor added, “I don’t think it is healthy to obsess about death. I definitely don’t do that. I have experienced several deaths of my close ones-my family, my parents. Along with some of my dear fronds as well, particularly the unexpected ones-the way Om Puri dimes, the way Farooq Shaikh died-were all terrible shocks. But it does no good to obsess over it. I think that death is the most unimportant part of life and ironically also the most unavoidable one as well. I don’t dwell on it at all. I will fo when I have to go. As long as I am around I want to be as alert and as alive as possible. I would not like my friends to be lamenting about me when I am gone but celebrating and laughing and talking about the things I did. I would rather they remember me for the life I have lived than talk about how I died.”

Throwback: Om Puri saved Naseeruddin Shah’s life after a stabbing

Actor Naseeruddin Shah had mentioned an incident in his autobiography in which actor Om Puri had saved his life. In the book, ‘And Then One Day: A Memoir’, he wrote about a stabbing incident that took place in a restaurant in Mumbai in 1977.

Jaspal, a former friend of Naseeruddin was the attacker. Naseer wrote, “While the Bhumika (1977) shooting was on, Om and I were in the middle of dinner when Jaspal, whom I had kept well away from for some time now, also entered and greeted Om. We ignored each other but, eyes fixed on me, he passed to sit on another table behind me, so I thought. After a while, I was reminded of his presence by what felt like a short sharp punch in the middle of my back. I started to rise, wearily preparing myself for another free-for-all. Before I could move, Om with a strangled cry lunged at something behind me. I turned to see Jaspal holding a small knife, its point dripping blood, his hand raised to strike again, and Om and two others grappling to subdue him.”

He then wrote, “Om returned to inform me that Jaspal had been taken to the kitchen and was being given the treatment. He wanted to take me to a doctor but was thwarted by the restaurant staff refusing to let us move till the police arrived. A sizeable crowd had collected by now, the muscles in my back were beginning to go into spasm, blood was soaking my shirt-back and had begun its progress down my trouser seat.”

“Om made the cardinal error of climbing in as well without permission and managed to rile the boss-man, thereby asking the cops to be gentle with me. He was ordered to get off and after considerable pleading with the goon in charge was allowed to stay. Neither of us had an idea where we were headed but I prayed it was not the police station,” he added.

Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri both are the alumni of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). They have worked together for films like Ardha Satya, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Maqbool, Bhumika, Mirch Masala, and many others.

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah had written an op-ed article in Indian Express after the demise of Dilip Kumar. He wrote that Dilip Kumar didn’t contribute much to Indian cinema and wondered why he ‘chose to play safe’.

In an interview with SpotboyE, the actor said that he made those remarks after careful observations. He said, “Those who decided to take offense at what I said about Dilip Saab should have read the entire article and they would have realized that my praise, though conditional, for his acting chops was nothing less than glowing. I practically ran out of superlatives when describing his acting abilities. My ‘complaint’ had nothing to do with that at all. However, the reaction of people who choose to see meanings where there are none doesn’t bother me… I said what I had to say, and if I hadn’t meant it I wouldn’t have said it.” The only film in which the duo was seen together was ‘Karma’ by Subhash Ghai.

Naseer said that all the problems between him and Dilip were the media’s doing. “The supposed problems we had during the making of a film which I’d rather forget was all the invention of the media and some vested interests who made our working together sound like some sort of acting duel that was to take place when considering the nature of our respective roles. I actually didn’t stand a chance. All this fanned the non-existent flames when the fact was we hardly even met including in the scenes we had together. I don’t consider acting to be a contest or a game of one-upmanship and I was far from happy with all the talk of Dilip Kumar versus me. I have never denied that it was my childhood dream to act with and not opposite him,” he clarified.

In the Op-ed for Indian Express, Naseeruddin wrote, “He (Dilip Kumar) produced only one film, didn’t direct any (officially at least), never passed on the benefit of his experience, didn’t bother to groom anyone, and apart from his pre-1970s performances, left behind no significant lessons for future actors; even his autobiography is but a rehash of old interviews.”

Actor Dilip Kumar took his last breath on July 7 at Hinduja hospital, Mumbai.

Naseeruddin praises Dilip Kumar but says he didn’t do much for cinema

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah wrote about his views on the late actor Dilip Kumar in an opinion piece of The Indian Express. He mentioned that he loved his acting skills but also wonder why the actor tried to ‘play safe’ He also added that Dilip Kumar didn’t contribute much to the cinema.

Naseeruddin wrote in the opinion piece, “Some of those works doubtless will survive the test of time but, given the position he was in, it is more than evident he didn’t do enough apart from acting and being involved in social causes close to his heart. He produced only one film, didn’t direct any (officially at least), never passed on the benefit of his experience, didn’t bother to groom anyone, and apart from his pre-1970s performances, left behind no significant lessons for future actors; even his autobiography is but a rehash of old interviews.”

Further, he added, “It’s baffling why a man as conscious of his place in history as he was should be reluctant to record his interaction with some of the admittedly great filmmakers of his time or say anything really informative about nature of his work and technique. I wish, at some point, he had at least been forthright about the travails involved in retaining legions of devoted fans.”

Along with this, Naseeruddin also praised Dilip Kumar’s performance for his ‘consummate characterizations, the dignified deportment, the mellifluous diction, the controlled but roiling emotionality’, especially in the films before Ganga Jumna (1961).

Dilip Kumar took his last breath at Hinduja hospital, Mumbai, on July 7. At that time, Naseer was admitted to the same hospital as he was suffering from pneumonia. Later, he was recovered and discharged from the hospital.

The last rites of the late actor took place at Juhu Qabristan with state honors. Actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Vidya Balan attended his funeral.

Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah, who was suffering from pneumonia has successfully completed his treatment at Khar-based P D Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre he got discharged on Wednesday. The ‘Ishqiya’ actor had a small patch of pneumonia in his lungs and was undergoing medication for the same. His son and actor Vivaan Shah took to his official Instagram handle and posted the pictures of Naseeruddin Shah with wife Ratna Pathak Shah updating fans about his recovery. He posted couple of photos of Naseeruddin which was captioned as, “Back home” and “He just got discharged today morning.” The first image revealed the actor using his phone while Ratna uses her phone. Whereas, the second image shows him standing in his room.

‘Bandish Bandits’ actor Naseeruddin Shah stated that there is no movie ‘mafia’ in Bollywood and it is all a blend of certain “imaginative minds”. In a conversation with India Today Television, he spoke the insider vs outsider debate, nepotism, and Bollywood mafia and more.

When he was asked about insider vs outsider debate, he said that he doesn’t understand this nonsense that is going on right now. According to him all these things are complete bullshit and should be put to an end. He further questioned everyone by asking why would not he, who has had a secure happy life as an actor, encourage his son to go into the same profession. He further said that, his sons did not get opportunities in this field just because they are Naseer Bhai’s sons, but because they were exposed to people and vice versa. He also said that veteran actor Om Puri did not come to Bombay with any kind of recommendations and that all these insider-outsider debate is bullshit. He later said that every individual who comes to the city to be an actor should realize that he might get a long, hard, lonely struggle ahead of him. Only learning the job and building contacts get anyone so far and further.

Regarding the movie ‘mafia’ topic which is going on, he said that it is all a concoction of certain imaginative minds. Naseeruddin Shah’s words were, “Naturally, I’ll give preference to people I like and the people who I work well with. If they also happen to be famous, or they happen to be the children of famous people, how the hell is it their fault?“ Further, the actor stated that there is no such thing called as mafia. It was during an interaction with The Film Companion, he said, “One can only hope for that though the level of the debate is getting more and more juvenile and I see it as completely unnecessary. Why are we washing our dirty underwear in public? Why are actors who have been content now complaining they are not on posters? Why are actors who didn’t get a certain film complaining they didn’t get it? They didn’t get it. There are so many actors who didn’t get it. If everyone of us starts enumerating out complaints, the film industry will seem like the worst place on earth. And I daresay that is true of any industry. First of all I hope this poor Sushant is laid to rest and people just leave him alone.”

The nepotism debate is just ging haywire with anyone and everyone from th film industry pulling each otehr down. Twitter has erupted with a war of words amongst actresses like never before. Kangana’s fiery interview in whcih she called Taapsee Pannu and Swara Bhasker B-Grade actresses has made things worse on the micr-blogging website. Having said that, one thing surely is apparent, the inclination towards the itnernet and the digital platforms have surely increased manifold.

Talking about OTT platforms Naseer said it would end the culture of celebrating mediocre blockbusters. “And my hope is that people will realise the futility of block-busting, seeti inducing applause inducing, coin throwing kind of movies because that is probably not going to happen anymore. It’s going to be very interesting to see what kind of reaction a Salman Khan film gets on the OTT platform? People watching alone at home, will they still throw coins at the screen? No they wont. It’s a fever that infects everybody,” he said.
