The News Agency PTI has claimed in a news report that he discussed the challenges in front of the media.

“PM @narendramodi visited the Press Trust of India headquarters in New Delhi earlier today in his first visit to any newsroom since he assumed office in 2014, and saw from close quarters the news agency’s newly-launched video service,” wrote PTI on X.

“During his one-hour stay, PM Modi interacted with the entire PTI staff in batches, and also spent time with the senior editorial and executive staff, discussing in detail the challenges and opportunities before the media,” added PTI.

“Earlier, the Indian government used to tell the youth of the country – if you protect the country, we will protect you and your family for the rest of your life. Rahul Gandhi also attacked PM Modi and media by alleging that both are diverting the attention of common people from cruicial issues.

“Like Modi ji, media also works to divert your attention. You may have never heard of any poor farmer in the media, but you must have seen Modi ji, cricket and film stars. TV never shows you the pain of the country, because it is not yours but Adani’s,” said Rahul Gandhi.

SC rejects plea to stop media for reporting on Adani-Hindenburg issue

According to LiveLaw, the Supreme Court on Friday denied lawyer M. L. Sharma’s request that the media refrain from reporting on the Adani-Hindenburg dispute until the court issues its decision.

“We would never impose an injunction against the media,” said Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud to Sharma. Sharma had previously filed a public interest litigation (PIL) requesting a probe into Hindenburg Research.

He told the court that the media was generating a “sensation.” CJI Chandrachud responded, “Make a reasonable argument, not for an injunction to the media.”

Last Monday, the Supreme Court reserved instructions on forming an expert committee to assess India’s regulatory structure to protect investors. Chandrachud further stated that the court would issue the orders soon.

The panel, which was chaired by India’s Chief Justice, also rejected the Center’s offer to deliver the names in a sealed cover.

“We will select the experts and maintain full transparency.” If we take names from the government, it would amount to a government-constituted committee. “There has to be full public confidence in the committee,” the CJI said.

CM MK Stalin orders withdrawal of defamation cases against the media outlets

On Thursday, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin directed the withdrawal of 90 defamation cases against journalist, dailies and television channel.

The defamation cases against the editors, printers and publishers of newspaper were lodged between 2012 and February 2021. At that time, AIADMK ruled in the southern state.

As per reports, in between the year 2011 and 2016, Tamil Nadu government initiated nearly 213 defamation lawsuit against those individuals who criticized the former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The list of 213 defamation lawsuit were presented before the Supreme Court by the Tamil Nadu government in 2016 when the court asked about the defamation cases filed by the then AIADMK government.

In 2019, Edappadi K Palaniswami who was the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu sued Samuel Mathew, former Tehelka Managing Editor along with six others for publishing a video clip linking EPS to the Kodanad robbery that took place in 2017.

Reportedly, the former Chief Minister too asked for around Rs 1.10 crore on the ground of the damages.

As reported by ‘NDTV’, the English dailies namely The Times of India, The Hindu, The Economic Times, Tamil newspaper Dinamalar, DMK organ Murasoli, Dinakaran together with Tamil Magazines like Ananda Vikatan, Junior Vikatan and Nakkeran confronted such cases.

On the other hand, among the television channel Puthiya Thalaimura, New 7, Kalaignar Tholaikatchi, Sathiyam, Captain, NDTV and Times Now faced similar cases.

Google to pay 1.1 million euros to the French Ministry

Google has accepted to pay a fine of 1.1 million euros ($1.3 million) after French authorities found that the search engine exhibited misleading rankings for French hotels.

Google had previously used the official source ‘Atout France’ along with input from other hotel-industry websites in its algorithm to rank hotels from one to five stars.

After receiving complaints from hoteliers about Google’s rankings, the French governments fraud and competition agency commenced an investigation in 2019 and 2020. It stated that it was to monitor the nature and fairness of the information supplied by the platform across 7,500 establishments.

Google said that it has now made the “necessary changes to only reflect the official French star rating for hotels on Google Maps and Search.”

Another headline made by Google is that it has negotiated a deal with Australia’s Seven West Media that emerged as the country’s first major news outlet to attain a licensing deal with Google. The government pressures for a law that would force the search engine giant to compensate media companies for content.

At an earnings announcement on Tuesday 15th February, Seven, which owns a free-to-air television network and the main metro newspaper in the city of Perth, said it would provide content for Google’s News Showcase platform. Terms were not disclosed

The deal displays Seven separating from rivals News Corp and Nine Entertainment which have failed to arrive at an agreement with Google and instead backed laws, expected to be passed this week, where the government sets the online giant’s content fees if a private deal is missing.

Till now in Australia, only specialist online publishers and one regional newspaper have accomplished deals to gain payment for their content appearing on the new Google platform which went live in the country this month. Outside Australia, Reuters is among news outlets with similar Google deals.

“The negotiations with Google recognise the value of quality and original journalism throughout the country and, in particular, in regional areas,” said Seven West Chairman Kerry Stokes in a statement.

Google’s Australia CEO Mel Silva said the US company was “proud to support original, trusted, and quality journalism” by featuring Seven on its platform. In January, Silva told a parliamentary hearing Google would pull its search engine from Australia if the namely News Media Bargaining Code became law. A Google representative declined to comment on the impact of the Seven deal.
