2022 has a been a very active year for national as well as world politics. Major world leaders have quit from top offices and the government in a lot of countries. As well as states which have lost their economic and political stability. With the recent resignation of Italian PM Mario Draghi, some of the other world leaders who simply quit are the following:.

Mario Draghi: Mario Draghi said that he would tender his resignation as the Italian prime minister on Thursday, after a party in his ruling coalition did not participate in a confidence vote. “I will tender my resignation to the president of the republic this evening. The national unity coalition that backed this government no longer exists”. He told the cabinet, according to a statement released by his office. In response to this, the Italian President Sergio Mattarella refused to accept the resignation and invited Draghi to appear before parliament to make a statement.

Boris Johnson: Boris Johnson finally stepped down from his position as the Prime Minister of UK. This too came after after a long procession of Ministers and MPs resigned from their jobs. The resignations made it difficult if not impossible for him to run the government. He did attempt to hold on to his position for a while. But as the departures mounted it became clear he would have to leave if the government was to get back on its feet. Some of the issues that fueled the resignation could be the Partygate scandal, Chris Pincher affair and the Owen Patterson row.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa: Sri Lanka is currently in the grip of economic chaos as it faces an acute shortage of food, fuel and other basic supplies. Mr Rajapaksa quit after fleeing to Singapore amid mass protests over his mismanagement of the economy. With this resignation, Sri Lankans have gotten out of the grip of the rule of a family. Which wielded power for over 20 years. Currently, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken up the position of acting president. Thus joining the club of World Leaders. And has paved the way for the country to begin the process of electing a new president.

Aksar Mamin: The former Prime Minister of Kazakhstan resigned along with his cabinet on January 6, 2022 admist protests against a sharp rise in fuel prices. Most cars in Kazakhstan use LPG as their fuel because of its low price. The latest move however resulted in doubling the prices of the gas leading to the outbreak of protests. Moreover, first in the oil-rich Mangystau province on the west of the country. But very quickly spreading to the largest city and former capital of the country, Almaty and other cities and provinces. Owing to the unrest, Mamin and his cabinet put in their papers. And continued to remain in office till alternative arrangements were made.

In the most recent update Mario Draghi, Prime Minister of Italy resigned on Thursday just hours after he had won the trust vote in the Senate. The Italian government was in the midst of an ongoing political crisis where the trust vote had taken place in the parliament against Mario Draghi’s coalition government. Mario Draghi had earlier mentioned that he would not head an administration where the 5-star movement weren’t supporters.

It was observed that the 5-star movement members had decided that they will not take part in the parliamentary vote. Currently, the decisions made by the 5-star movement hold a lot of importance. As they might launch the entire country into a state of political uncertainty. And risk undermining efforts to secure billions of euros in European Union Funds.

Hence, elections in Italy are scheduled for the first part of the next year. Since tensions have been growing among the coalition’s members. Who have been on opposite ends of the political spectrum since early 2021. Giuseppe Conte, the head of the 5-Star party, declared late on Wednesday. Further, that his party will not support the vote of confidence. He argued that the government should be doing more to address the escalating social issues in the third-largest economy in the eurozone. “I have a strong fear that September will be a time when many families will face the terrible choice of paying their electricity bill or buying food,” he said, as he was referring to the sharp spike in energy costs.

Prime Minister, during his visit to Rome to attend the G20 summit in Italy, met with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Friday, October 29. During the meeting the two leaders discussed the situation in Afghanistan, pointing out the root cause of the problems the country is currently battling.

Stating the causes to be radicalism, extremism and terrorism, PM Modi surmised that their outcomes had to be very thoroughly examined by the international community, said Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla during a press conference.

Moreover, the Prime Minister emphasised that the situation in Afghanistan could not be seen in isolation. He also listed the failure and inability to provide good governance and the failure to be able to deal with the situation as it stands as a matter of introspection. During the press conference, the Foreign Secretary also pointed out that PM Modi warned the international community to be vigilant of any form of intimidation and threat that could emerge out of Afghanistan.

There was a strong sentiment concerning Afghanistan that was understood both by members of the European Union and Italy, Shringla said, adding that both the leaders agreed upon those sentiments and highlighted it as something to be scrutinised.

The Foreign Secretary noted that the emphasis of the leaders was also on the humanitarian situation in the country and the Italian Prime Minister referred to his efforts at the G20 summit to ensure that the people of Afghanistan were not made to suffer the consequences of the current situation.

PM Modi also emphasised the need for distinction between the current governance of Afghanistan and the people of the country, asserting that the Afghani people ought to be offered humanitarian aid. Shringla said that PM Modi further necessitated that direct and unimpeded access to humanitarian assistance be provided to Afghanistan.
