Early trends in the West Bengal Assembly election showed the BJP leading in 192 seats, while the Trinamool Congress was ahead in 92, as counting continued across the state’s 293 constituencies. The BJP’s lead placed it well above the majority mark, according to the latest trends reported from the Election Commission count.

The trends also showed the BJP at around 45% of the vote, while the TMC was polling about 42%, reflecting a close contest in the popular vote even as the seat tally tilted sharply toward the BJP. Analysts and poll trackers noted that a relatively small shift in vote share translated into a much larger gain in seats.

In Bhabanipur, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was reported ahead, while BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was trailing in the latest count. The Bhabanipur contest remained one of the most closely watched races in the state because it featured a direct face-off between the two top leaders.

In the Jhargram belt, the BJP was also leading in all four seats where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier campaigned and reportedly ate jhalmuri during a rally stop. Those seats included Jhargram, Binpur, Gopiballavpur and Nayagram. The trends in those constituencies added to the BJP’s momentum across the state.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has ordered fresh polling in Falta on May 21 after complaints and irregularities, meaning the final West Bengal outcome will now be decided on 293 seats instead of 294. The repolling in Falta is expected to take place later this month, with counting scheduled for May 24.

The count remains underway, but the latest trends showed a dramatic shift in Bengal politics, with the BJP taking a commanding early lead and the TMC struggling to narrow the gap.

Civic Body Recruitment Scam: CBI Raids Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim, MLA Madan Mitra’s Residences

On Sunday morning, a team of Central Bureau of Investigation carried out raids at 15 locations in West Bengal, including the residences of Cabinet Minister Firhad Hakim and Trinamool Congress’ MLA Madan Mitra, in relation to the Municipal Corporation (civic body) recruitment scam.

TMC leader and Cabinet Minister Firhad Hakim holds the portfolio of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs in CM Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet. Hakim is also the Mayor of Kolkata. CBI raided Hakim’s residence in south Kolkata over alleged civic body recruitment scam.

News agency PTI reported that many supporters of Firhad Hakim gathered outside his house in south Kolkata and staged a protest against CBI’s action over him in alleged scam case.

CBI also raided the house of former minister in Bengal government and TMC leader Madan Mitra. Mitra’s house in Bhawanipur was raided by CBI. He’s the current MLA from Kamarhati constituency.

“The raids are being conducted in connection with illegal municipal recruitment in Group C and Group D posts which is being probed as per the court’s order,” a CBI official told The Indian Express.

Earlier on Thursday, house of State Food and Supplies Minister Rathin Ghosh was also raided by a team of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in connection with the same alleged scam.

He was framed by ED for making allegedly illegal appointments of schoolteachers and staff in government-run schools when he was Education Minister.

ED has put raid on Partha’s close aid Arpita Mukherjee residential premises on Friday where they found a whopping ₹21 crore. She was soon arrested and was brought to Special Court in Kolkata on Monday.

“If anyone is found guilty, he or she must be punished, but I condemn any malicious campaign against me. The truth must come out, but within a time-frame,” Mamata Banerjee said to Media.

Besides, ED has carried out simultaneous 20 raids in the state. Which includes the houses of former advisor of the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) Shanti Prasad Sinha. Ex-president of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education Kalyanmoy Ganguly and nine others, the official announced.

Farooq Abdullah says “no” to being Presidential Candidate

He is the second political leader to withdraw his name from consideration as a joint presidential candidate. Mamata Banerjee blames “BJP’s sin” for violence in Howrah

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed the BJP on Saturday for the violence in Howrah, asking why people should suffer for the ‘BJP’s sin,’ referring to former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s controversial remark about Prophet Muhammad, which sparked the clash.

“I have said this before. There are some political parties behind what is happening in Howrah. They want to cause riots but these will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against all of the. BJP’s sin, why should people suffer?” Banerjee tweeted.

Since Thursday, Howrah, where West Bengal secretariat Nabanna is located, has seen violent protests in response to Nupur Sharma’s controversial comments. The government ordered the suspension of the internet on Friday until 6 a.m. on Monday to prevent the spread of rumours.

New clashes on saturday

On Saturday, new clashes erupted in the city between protesters and police, despite police claims that the situation was peaceful. “The situation in the Howrah district is calm. Since Friday night, no incidents of protest or violence have been reported. “In sensitive areas, we have deployed large police contingents,” a police officer told PTI. Section 144 was extended until June 15th.

On the night of 21st March, 10 houses were set ablaze and TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh was killed. Close to 6 women and 2 children were charred to ashes in the Bogtui village of Birbhum, outside the borders of Rampurhat village.

After the Calcutta High Courts directive, the Central Bureau of Investigation was reassigned to probe the Birbhum killings. Local district police officers are also probing the killing of Bhadu Sheikh.

A CCTV grab clearly shows Bhadu Sheikh busy on a call, when the assaulters came on a bike and gunned down Bhadu Shiekh.

3 people so far have been arrested and are suspected to be direct links to the killings in Birbhum, they have been identified as Shera, Raja and Sanju Sheikh.

Moreover, 22 people are in police custody including TMC block supremo Anarul Hossian. Mamta Banerjee ordered Anarul’s arrest even before CBI presided over the case.

Folks of the victims burnt has escaped to the neighbouring town of Batashpur are expected to come back to Bogtui village today. Police checkpoints are in place and 24×7 CCTV coverage has been installed as per High Court’s directive.

Kolkata, Dec 17 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday congratulated the teaching community and other stakeholders after the state secured the top rank in the “large states’ section on an index that evaluates literacy in children aged ten years and below.

The report on the ‘Index on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy’ was prepared by ‘Institute for Competitiveness’ and released by Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) chairman Bibek Deb in New Delhi on Thursday.

Taking to Twitter, Banerjee said: “Great news for West Bengal, We have secured the top rank

among larger states in the “Foundation Literacy & Numeracy Index”.

“I congratulate all teachers, guardians and members of our education department for this

outstanding achievement, ” she posted on her Twitter handle.

According to a report, under the “Foundation & Literacy Index”, the regions have been divided

into four categories — large, small states, Union Territories and North East.

“The top-scoring regions are Kerala (67.95) and West Bengal (58.95) in small and large states, respectively, ” the EAC-PM said in a statement.

Bihar hit the bottom among the larger states. In the ‘small states’ category, Kerala topped the list

and Jharkhand was adjudged the worst performer on the index.

Mamata Banerjee appoints former CM of Goa Luizinho Faleiro as AITC’s vice-president

Mamata Banerjee, the current chief minister of Bengal and chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has appointed Goa’s former chief minister Luizinho Faleiro as AITC’s national vice-president.

The announcement was made by the All India Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee through a statement released on Friday, October 22. The statement also disclosed that Faleiro will be made the party’s vice-president with immediate effect.

The statement released by AITC also recalled Faleiro’s political career and his dedication towards the development of people. “We have full faith that under his able guidance, AITC will reach greater heights and continue the fight to protect every Indian citizen’s democratic rights,” it further read.

Faleiro’s appointment to the post of vice-president comes just weeks after he joined the All India Trinamool Congress. Earlier a member of the Congress party, he had quit and also resigned from the State Legislative Assembly of Goa to become part of the AITC last month on September 29.

This move by Mamata Banerjee-led AITC comes in light of the party’s intentions to advance and establish itself as a strong presence in the coastal state after it had failed to win any seats in the 2012 state elections.

AITC had earlier announced that it will participate in the next state elections in Goa, contesting for seats in the 40 member house next year in February. Mamata Banerjee will be visiting Goa for two days starting October 28 to commence the election campaign for the Assembly elections. Poll strategist Prashant Kishore is also expected to be present in Goa during Mamata’s two-day visit.

West Bengal government forms an inquiry commission to probe the Pegasus spyware row

Amidst several claims on Pegasus spyware, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, informed that the West Bengal government has set up an inquiry commission to probe the Pegasus spyware row.

She noted that the decision was taken at a cabinet meeting.

Supreme Court judge M.B. Lokur and former Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya are the two members of the inquiry commission.

Mamata Banerjee stated, “We had hoped that Centre will start an inquiry in the Pegasus row under the supervision of the Supreme Court. But this government did nothing even when Parliament is on, therefore before going to Delhi, we have taken the decision to set up an inquiry commission at a cabinet meeting today. West Bengal is the first state to set up an inquiry commission.”

The chief minister claimed that as there were ‘aggrieved parties’ in the state whose phones had been put under surveillance, the commission would look into the matter.

In the past week, Mamata Banerjee urged the Supreme Court to take Suo moto cognizance on the issue.

The chief minister is scheduled to leave for Delhi, later in the day. At the national Capital she is likely to meet the leaders of the opposition parties.

Suvendu Adhikari sought Calcutta HC for CBI, says has been subjected to political vendetta

Suvendu Adhikari, leader of opposition in West Bengal Assembly and BJP MLA, has alleged that he was subjected to political vendetta and filed a petition before the Calcutta High Court seeking for a transfer of all criminal cases registered against him by the state police to the CBI.

Suvendu Adhikari has also prayed for an order of quashing of FIR’s registered against him by the state police.

Mr. Adhikari has filed the writ petition on Thursday where he sought to transfer the criminal cases against him to the CBI for an impartial investigation.

Mr. Adhikari has reported that he was being subjected to political vendetta since he was an opposition party leader and the cases were registered against him with false claims and had sought an order of the high court directing quashing of the FIRs against him.

The state police and the CID have probed a number of cases in relation to Suvendu Adhikari.

On Tuesday, the police were prompted on filing suo motu cases against Mr. Adhikari, as the BJP leader stoked a controversy when he mentioned that he got access to the call details of Amarnath K, Purba Medinipur District SP, while the ongoing nationwide row over the alleged investigating activities with the Pegasus spyware.

On Monday, in a meeting in the district’s Tamluk area, Suvendu Adhikari publicly suggested the local police chief refrain from doing anything that would lead to his transfer to Kashmir.

Earlier this year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was defeated by the Nandigram MLA in assembly elections.

The district police had also probed a case of alleged pilferage of the relief material in Purba Medinipur.

There has been an investigation going on by the state CID for the unnatural death of a police constable who was a part of Suvendu Adhikari’s security team three years ago when in the TMC government he was a minister.

On the basis of a complaint from the constable’s widow, the murder case was put in motion and the probe was handed by the state to the CID.

Amit Mitra to retire as Financial Minister of West Bengal

Amit Mitra, Senior Trinamool leader, will most likely step down as the West Bengal Finance Minister due to ill-health. Amit Mitra is 74 years old and did not contest in the Assembly elections held recently. He was handed the Finance Portfolio by Mamata Banerjee and had been at the post since 2011 when the TMC first came in the power to Bengal.

Amit Mitra could remain at his post for six months maximum unless he contests for a by-election and wins.

A senior leader of Trinamool said that Amit Mitra would complete six months as state finance minister in the third Mamata Banerjee cabinet on November 4, and since he was not an MLA minister, he would have to leave the post after six months or seek elections through bypolls. However, he had informed the party that he did not want to continue as the state minister after November 4 due to ill health.

It has been alleged that Mamata Banerjee would keep the Finance portfolio until she found someone suitable to take charge as the next Finance Minister.

Mamata Banerjee had presented the interim on behalf of Mitra as he was not present for the interim budget in February and also during the tabling of the state budget in the previous week, while the state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee tabled the budget in the previous week.

Mitra was made the Finance Minister after the party had come to power in West Bengal in 2011. He was a two-time MLA from Khardah constituency in North 24 Parganas, and he also held the industry portfolio since the year 2014.

SC stayed Calcutta HC order on the Narada Case

On Friday, the Supreme stayed a Calcutta High Court order and refused to take on record affidavits filed by the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, and other in connection with the Narada case.

The SC also directed the CM and the Bengal government and Law Minister, Moloy Ghatak, to file a fresh plea asking the High Court to reconsider the taking of the affidavits on record.

The High Court had been asked to decide on the fresh pleas and accepting the affidavits at the next scheduled hearing date which is on June 29.

The order came today after Justice Aniruddha Bose rescued himself. The previous week, another Kolkata Justice Indira Banerjee, opted out of a separate case about the Bengal post-poll violence.

The case had been reassigned to Justice Vineet Saran and was rescheduled to today. Justice Vineet Saran said that it was a new case and they have not yet read the file, so he said to have it on Friday.

Mamata Banerjee had moved the SC against the HC’s decision on June 21. A five-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on June 9 declined to accept the affidavits filed by Mamata Banerjee and Mr. Ghatak. The bench was led by Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal.

The two advocates appearing for Mamata Banerjee and Mr. Ghatak and the Bengal Government, Senior advocates Rakesh Dwivedi and Vikas Singh, said that the affidavits had to be on record as they dealt with the roles of concerned persons.

The High Court said that Ms. Banerjee and Mr. Ghatak can not now be allowed to file the affidavits at their own whims and fancies. The HC also said that both of them took the risk of not filing the affidavits at the right time.

The affidavits contained the events in the version of Mamata Banerjee and Moloy Ghatak for May 17, when three members of the ruling Trinamool Congress had been arrested by the CBI in the connection with Narada Case. The three ministers were Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee, MLA Madan Mitra and ex party leader Sovan Chatterjee.

The arrests were followed by Mamata Banerjee camping outside the agency office for over six hours, and the same time the Trinamool supporters protested by throwing stones and tried breaking barricades. The protests had been cited as “Mobocracy”, and the CBI asked for the transfer of the hearing of Narada case out of the state. The affidavits of Ms. Banerjee and Mr. Ghatak were meant to counter the CBI’s transfer request.

The Narada Case involves a 2014 sting operation by a journalist who posed as a businessman with a plan for investing in Bengal, where he gave cash as bribes to seven of the Trinamool MP’s, four ministers, one MLA and a police officer and taped the entire exchange. The tapes had been released just before the 2016 Assemble election.

BJP vice-prez Mukul Roy joins back TMC; Mamata Banerjee says “More will join”

Ending all suspense, Mukul Roy and son Subhranshu returned to the Trinamool fold on Friday. Roy, who was one of the first frontline TMC leaders to switch over to BJP nearly four years back, today returned to the Trinamool, the party he was associated with since the days of its forming.

Roy played an active role in BJP’s campaign for the recently concluded Bengal Assembly polls. Despite a spirited campaign, the BJP could win only 77 seats in the 294-seat Bengal assembly. Following the assembly election results, several fissures had emerged in the Bengal BJP, and the saffron party saw several desertions, mostly to the Trinamool.

Welcoming Mukul back to the TMC, party supremo Mamata said Roy had said nothing against Trinamool, despite campaigning for the BJP. He was cajoled into joining BJP with threats of action by Central agencies.

Soon after returning to Trinamool, Mukul Roy said that the present situation is such that nobody will want to remain in BJP. Roy, once the former second-in-command of the TMC who joined the saffron party in November 2017, has been distancing himself from the BJP for the last several days.

Roy, once a close aide of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, did not attend June 8 meeting to discuss the post-election strategy called by the state BJP leadership. BJP’s Bengal unit had held a high-powered organisational meeting on Tuesday where party leaders were required to be physically present.

The absence of two other BJP heavyweights Shamik Bhattacharya and Rajib Banerjee at the meeting had sparked a buzz in the state politics after the fierce battle between the BJP and the TMC in the recent assembly election.

This comes at a time when several turncoat politicians, who switched from the TMC to BJP ahead of assembly polls, have expressed regret over their decision to quit the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

Before rising to prominence in the BJP, Mukul Roy was a founder-member of the TMC which he quit in 2017. Rajib Banerjee left the TMC in January this year and contested the West Bengal assembly polls on a BJP ticket.

BJP lost the polls but emerged as the second-largest party with 77 seats in the 294-member state assembly. Trinamool Congress registered a landslide victory winning 213 seats.

On May 2, 2021, the West Bengal assembly poll results were declared and the Mamata’s TMC made it to the chair for a third consecutive time. In a series of exciting things that happened on the result day, Bengal’s sitting CM Mamata Banerjee lost the Nandigram seat to her early aid Suvendu Adhikari who joined his hands with BJP, just before the polls.

Further, TMC supremo blamed the Centre for sending maximum vaccines and oxygen to only 2-3 states and she has also requested the central government to sanction Rs 30,000 crore for a universal vaccination to all throughout the country.

While counting of votes is yet to witness the conclusion, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Firhad Hakim, issued a statement over Mamata Banerjee’s lead in the election results and asserted that she will be the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the third time.

Speaking to the news agency ANI, Mr Hakim maintained that BJP tried their best to crack but they didn’t succeed. The former mayor of Kolkata also pointed out that TMC will emerge victorious in the assembly elections as the Left has vanished owing to their wrong policies.

He pointed out TMC is fighting against a communal force and mentioned that the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is committed to secularism, committed to development. Speaking to ANI, Firhad Hakim highlighted that the party is committed to bringing the people together.

The surge of Covid-19 cases in India has flagged concerns across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday commented about the same and asserted that vaccination is the biggest weapon in the fight against coronavirus. Furthermore, he also urged the doctors to encourage more and more patients to get vaccinated.

Earlier today, PM Modi interacted with doctors across the country through video conferencing on the Covid-19 issue and vaccination progress. During his address, he appreciated the doctors, medical and para-medical staff for their invaluable service towards the country during the coronavirus pandemic.

For the last few days, the shortage of medical supplies in several states have sparked tensions – leading the Chief Ministers to request the centre to increase the allotment of beds and supply of oxygen in view of surging Covid-19 cases.

Today, PM Modi reportedly assured that the central government has taken many important decisions related to the supply of essential medicines, injections and sufficient availability of oxygen. State Governments have been given necessary guidelines about these.

Similarly, the Prime Minister has also urged the doctors to educate people against several rumours on Covid treatment and prevention.

“It is very important that people do not become a victim of panic. For this along with proper treatment, emphasis must also be on counselling of patients admitted in hospitals,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

He also encouraged doctors to use tele-medicine for the treatment of other diseases, in case there is no emergency.

In his interaction, the PM has noted that this time the pandemic is spreading rapidly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities as well.

He urged doctors to connect with their colleagues working in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and give them online consultations to ensure that all protocols are followed correctly.

The Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal followed by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, sought aid over the shortage in oxygen and the hugely essential drug Remdesivir administered to patients.

The Delhi and West Bengal governments are desperately trying to scale up the number of available hospital beds, Remdesivir, vaccines and oxygen supply.

Meanwhile, the doctors during their interaction with Prime Minister Modi shared their experiences in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic and congratulated him on his leadership in dealing with the pandemic. They also spoke about augmenting healthcare infrastructure and reiterated the importance of people wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing, stressing about maintaining health infrastructure for non-Covid patients.

The meeting was also attended by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, MoS (Health) Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Union Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Mansukh Mandaviya, Principal Secretary to PM, Dr V K Paul Member (H) NITI Aayog, Cabinet Secretary, Union Health Secretary, Union Pharmaceutical Secretary, DG ICMR Dr Balram Bhargava, amongst other officers from Ministries / Departments of Central Government, reported news agency ANI.

On the other hand, the Covid-19 situation in the country is deteriorating as India once again reported the highest single-day spike of coronavirus cases with over 2.73 lakh fresh infections and 1,619 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The ANI report also detailed the ‘number of Covid-19 cases’ provided by Health Ministry. In India, there are currently 19,29,329 active cases as of Monday and the death toll reached 1,78,769.

In the last 24 hours, as many as 1,44,178 people recovered from the virus.

On Saturday, April 17, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) writes to Chief Electoral Officier of West Bengal regarding “recording of phone conversation between CM Mamata Banerjee and Partha Pratim Ray.”

In a letter written to CEO West Bengal, TMC writes an audiotape of a telephonic conversation purportedly between Smt. Mamata Banerjee and Partha Pratim Ray was released and played by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at their office during press conference on 16.04.2021 in the presence of BJP IT cell in charge Amit Malviya and MP Locket Chatterjee.

TMC alleges of not only illegally recording but also playing it at the press conference out of context, which is clear violation of Indian Telegraph Act,1885, IT act,2000, Indian Penal Code, 1860 and Indian Constitution.

TMC also requests for necessary steps to be taken for prosecution under criminal law. TMC urges Election Commission to urgently look into the matter, enquire and take necessary decision against the perpetrators forthwith.

Recently posted audio clip featured West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee telling the Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominee of Sitalkuchi to hold rallies with bodies of the four persons killed in CISF firing during polling on April 10.

The mounting political tensions in West Bengal are likely to escalate as yet another controversy has erupted, after the Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) leader Amit Malviya has posted an audio clip on Friday. The recently posted audio clip featured West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee telling the Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominee of Sitalkuchi to hold rallies with bodies of the four persons killed in CISF firing during polling on April 10.

Releasing the audio clip on his official Twitter handle, BJP’s IT Cell chief Amit Malviya claimed that the “chief minister is trying to instigate riots by asking her party leaders to take out rallies with bodies”.

The audio clip contained excerpts of the telephonic conversation between Banerjee and Partha Pratim Ray. TMC in its response to the audio clip released on the eve of the fifth phase of the polls – called it “bogus” and claimed that such a conversation never took place, reported News18.

“Post the violence in Sitalkuchi, Mamata Banerjee wanted to take out procession with bodies of those who died trying to capture booth 126. She spoke about framing the SP and IC for doing their job, asked TMC’s candidate to spread misinformation about detention centers to scare Ms,” BJP’s IT Cell chief Amit Malviya wrote in a tweet on Friday.

Furthermore, BJP has also decided to move to the Election Commission of India over the released audio clip. Malviya has also alleged that all efforts were being made to make sure that free and fair polls do not happen in Bengal.

A recent News18 report quoted the BJP’s IT Cell chief, as he said, “This is a gross violation of political ethics and the BJP will approach the election commission in its demand for strict action against the Bengal chief minister.”

Meanwhile, BJP MP and assembly candidate from Hooghly, Locket Chatterjee, said: “it is shocking to see a woman act like this and play dirty politics… Didi does not shy away from playing politics of the dead.”

BJP leader Amit Shah will hold a town hall meeting in Baranagar today. On Monday he claimed that the BJP is ahead in 92 of the 135 seats that went to polls in the first four phases of the West Bengal assembly elections, and asked people to give a grand farewell to CM Mamata Banerjee by helping BJP win over 200 plus seats in Bengal.

Earlier, on April 11, Election Commission banned the entry of all politicians in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal for next 72 hours to prevent all unlawful activities and prevent violence.

Election Commission had also directed Ministry of Home Affairs to deploy 71 more CAPF companies for upcoming four phases of elections in the West Bengal. In the fourth phase of the elections, a total of five persons were killed, including four in alleged firing by Central Reserve Force personnel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi further added– “Didi ruled in Bengal for 10 years in the name of ‘Ma Mati Manush’ but she keeps saying ‘Modi, Modi, Modi’ in rallies these days. Didi has only created a mess in the name of governance.”

Narendra Modi also shared the pain of losing Shobha Mazumdar, during elections and said– “The cruelty with which she was beaten by TMC goons is a picture we can never forget.”

While addressing rally in Bardhaman, Narendra Modi said, “That brave police officer, who had come to Bengal on duty two days ago, was beaten to death. Again, he adds, “Earlier, Didi encouraged youngsters and women (in Sitalkuchi) to come forward and gherao CAPF. You said and left on your wheelchair. But because of you, four people died there. On the same morning, a BJP worker also died in the constituency,” quotes ANI.

In addition to this, Shah is scheduled to hold a public meeting in Basirhat Dakshin followed by another roadshow in Panihati.

Well, after the violence, that took place in Cooch Behar on Saturday, the TMC demanded the resignation of the Union Home Minister.

Meanwhile, at a press conference in Siliguri led by Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, she spoke to the families of the ones who were shot dead in the Cooch Behar violence.

Banerjee said, “They fired targeted chest. If their intention was to disperse the mob, they may fire on the leg but they targeted chest. They are CISF. They have no experience to curb mob”.

Bengal CM has also ensured that her government will demand a CBI investigation into the incident.

On Sunday, April 11, Home Minister reached Shantipur, West Bengal to hold a road-show for the upcoming assembly polls on the seat. After holding the road-show, Union Home Minister said that all types of poll-related violence will end in Bengal if they comes to power.

Shah also blamed CM Mamata Banerjee for doing politics of appeasement. He said, “Mamata Banerjee condoled only four people. She did not shed a single tear for Anand Burman because he belonged to a Rajvanshi community. He was not fit for her appeasement politics. This type of politics is not the culture of Bengal.”

As the elections reaches the halfway all the parties are working hard and BJP senior leader also working hard and Amit shah will address six public meetings in Bengal and he will also hold three roadshows in the State.

This angst has emerged after the Election Commission barred the entry of political leaders in Cooch Behar for the next 72 hours– following the onslaughts that were made in the district on the day of the fourth phase of the election, on Saturday. Four people were killed in a firing and TMC has claimed that those people were the supporters of it.

Well, the TMC has also convicted the BJP of the violence. Though, the PTI quoting the police sources has mentioned that it was the CISF who opened fire during the clash which took place.

“In Cooch Behar district comprising of 9 AC’s where voting shall be over by today, no political leader from any national, state, or other parties should be allowed to enter the geographical boundaries of the district for the next 72 hours. This comes into force with immediate effect”, said the poll panel in its order, as per the reports of ANI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also commiserated over the incident.

On Saturday, April 10, Election Commission directs Ministry of Home Affairs to deploy 71 more CAPF companies for upcoming four phases of elections in the West Bengal. In the fourth phase of the elections, a total of five persons were killed, including four in alleged firing by Central Reserve Force personnel.

The new companies comprise of the BSF (33), ITBP (13), CRPF (12), SSB (9) and CISF (4). A CAPF company has an operational strength of about 85 personnel. West Bengal voted on April 10th in the 4th phase as part of the eight-phase polling. The next phase of polls will take place on April 17 followed by April 22, 26 and 29.

According to preliminary reports, four persons were killed as CISF personnel opened fire after coming under attack in a village. “A scuffle took place, and locals gheraoed them and attempted to snatch their rifles, following which the central forces opened fire. Further details are awaited,” a police official told PTI. The EC has sought a detailed report on the incident.

While holding a political rally in Krishnanagar, West Bengal, on Saturday, Prime Minster Narendra Modi attacked Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and her party Trinamool Congress (TMC) for being indulged in cut-money practices.

Further, he added, “The reason behind Didi’s anger is not only BJP and Modi but the people whose trust Didi has broken. The minority community that Didi persuaded are in distress so she needs to appeal to them continuously,” as quoted by ANI.

Speaking up for the people of Bengal, PM said, “This election is not only being fought by BJP but the people of Bengal are also fighting this election.”

He said, “Didi abuses EC, CAPF, EVM to the extent that Didi is abusing her own party’s polling agents now. She is so desperate that she is defaming Bengal’s voters. Didi, o Didi! People of Bengal do not expect you to have sensitivity anymore,” as quoted by ANI.

The fourth phase of Bengal assembly elections on 44 seats of the state, took place on Saturday. The West Bengal assembly elections is scheduled to be held in eight phases, starting from the 27^th of March till the 29^th of April, 2021. The counting will take place on the 2^nd of May.

During the fourth phase of Bengal assembly elections on Saturday, clashes broke out between the TMC and BJP workers while the voting was underway at the Sitalkuchi booth in Cooch Behar. Amid the clash, four people were shot dead. The PTI quoting the police sources says that it was CISF who opened fire during the attack it killed four people.

There has been a magnanimous outrage among the TMC workers over the incident. “Why did the Centre Armed Police Forces fire? Where do they get this audacity of firing on common voters? She added, “Our leader Mamata Banerjee will visit the houses of all those who were killed today”.

The TMC MP further said, “The firing took place because common people were resisting the effort by BJP hooligans to disrupt the voting. They are being encouraged by Central Armed Police Force and we feel this is a conspiracy headed by Home Minister, we are demanding his resignation”.

Again, Roy added, “Our party workers will hold protest in every block and ward of West Bengal over the firing in Cooch Behar,” as quoted by ANI.

As per the reports of PTI, Mamata Banerjee had demanded Union Home Minister’s resignation over firing at Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar.

Well, Prime Minister Modi, addressing a rally in Bengal, said, “Saddened by the incident in Cooch Behar. My condolences are with their families. I request the Election Commission to take strict action against the ones who are the culprits”.

On Saturday, April 10, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) claimed that Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) opened fire twice at polling booths in Cooch Behar where people were casting their votes, which led to the killing of four of their party workers.

TMC leader Dola Sen said, “In block 1 of Mathabhanga (Cooch Behar), one TMC worker was killed and three were injured after Central Forces opened fire on them and then in Sitalkuchi block, three TMC workers were also killed and one got injured.”

Dola Sen further added that Central Forces are crossing limits and doing wrong– “When Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called them out, Election Commission issued her notices.”

TMC MP Derek O’ Biren had also written a letter to Election Commisssion about the incident that took place in Cooch Behar.

Moreover, CM Mamata Banerjee also reacted to the incident and said, “CRPF has shot dead 4 people in Sitalkuchi (Cooch Behar) today. There was another death in the morning. According to the Election Commisssion ,till 1:30 pm, West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 52.89 per cent across 44 constituencies in five districts during the fourth phase of the state assembly polls. The Mathabhanga constituency in the state has witnessed the highest voting percentage with a voter turnout of 61.30 per cent till 1.30 pm, while the Maheshtala constituency witnessing the lowest voting percentage with a voter turnout of 42.35 per cent only.

While the third phase of Bengal elections 2021 is going to take place tomorrow, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a door-to-door campaign in Bhawanipur, Kolkata. “I went to Bhawanipur. Mamata Banerjee is losing her earlier seat and our candidate Rudranil Ghosh, will win with a huge mandate,” said the Union Home Minister.

Slogans of ‘Jai Shree Ram’ were raised when Shah was doing door-to-door campaigning in Bhawanipur. Rudranil Ghosh of BJP will be competing against Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay of TMC in a major battle.

Well, before that, Shah held a press conference in Kolkata, where he attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He hits back over Mamata’s remark of BJP instructing the CRPF to disturb TMC’s voters. Shah said, “Union Home Minister has no grip over the CRPF when they are indulged in election works, it is controlled by the Election Commission”.

Shah added, “TMC has a fear that they are losing their minority voters, TMC should do an analysis over the reasons behind its failure”. Shah also added that the GDP contribution of Bengal was 30% which has fallen down to 3.3% under Mamata’s regime.

The Union Home Minister has also assured the people of Bengal that employment will be procured to at least one person in each family plus women will be provided a reservation of 33% in the government jobs, if wins to power.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had issued another notice to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the supremo of Trinamool Congress (TMC), for her statement Central Forces on 28th March and 7th April. The ECI had asked Mamata to explain her stand by April 10, 2021.

The notice to CM Banerjee was issued by ECI on Thursday night, and the notice quotes, “prima facie violated various sections of the Indian Penal Code with her remarks”, reported PTI.

The Bengal CM has to respond to the notice by 11 am on Saturday, April 10. The EC said prima facie, the completely false, provocative and intemperate statements by Banerjee attempted to berate and vilify central paramilitary forces during the electoral process.

Earlier, ECI had also issued notice to CM Banerjee over her remark on split of ‘Muslim votes’. “Appealing to Muslim voters to not let their vote be split among different political parties and demanding votes on communal ground for TMC”, said the ECI.

In the notice, the ECI said that after examining an authenticated transcript of Mamata Banerjee’s speech from the said date, it is of the view that she has violated the Representation of People Act, 1951and also the Model Code of Conduct for the elections.

The BJP alleged that Mamata Banerjee in her speech promoted enmity between Hindu and Muslims. However, reacting to EC’s earlier notice, Mamata Banerjee said that the poll panel can serve 10 cause notices to but her reply will be the same.

“You can issue 10 show-cause notices to me but my reply will be the same. I will always speak against any division of Hindu and Muslim votes,” the TMC supremo stated.

The TMC supremo, who addressed four back-to-back rallies during the day, sought to know why no complaint has been registered against BJP star campaigner and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he often makes references to Hindu and Muslim vote-banks while delivering speeches.

All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Girindra Nath Barman from Mathabhanga was allegedly attacked while he was campaigning for the assembly elections in the Cooch Behar district of North Bengal. TMC has accused that their candidate was attacked by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) goons.

Trinamool Congres (TMC) tweeted, “Nervous over rapidly losing support among Rajbangshi community today led BJP goons to mount a cowardly attack on Mathabhanga TMC candidate Girindra Nath Burman. A widely respected figure among Rajbangshis, he was targeted in Ghoksadanga GP.”

A TMC worker said in a statement, “BJP goons vandalised his car & attacked him. He has sustained head injuries. We demand action,” as quoted by news agency ANI.

Sushil Barman of BJP and CPI(M)’s Ashok Barman are also contesting from Mathabhanga constituency. Election for this seat will take place in fourth phase on Saturday. The first three phase of the eight-phased West Bengal elections have already taken place.

On Wednesday, the BJP’s West Bengal president Dilip Ghosh was also attacked with bombs and bricks in Cooch Behar, BJP accused TMC for this attack. Ghosh said that the car’s window glasses including the one on his side were smashed in the attack which took place at Sitalkuchi after a public meeting of his party.

The fourth phase elections will be held in 44 assembly constituencies spread across five districts. Polling will be held in this phase in urban Howrah, parts of South 24 Parganas that are adjacent to Kolkata, urban parts of Hooghly, besides Alipurduar and Coochbehar.

On Thursday, April 8, Delhi High Court also directed Election Commission to implement Covid-19 guidelines in the state in which election is being scheduled.
