Vladimir Putin’s agents hacked Liz Truss’ phone: Report

When Liz Truss was the foreign minister of the United Kingdom, her personal phone was hacked by alleged Putin campaign operatives, according to a revelation in the Daily Mail on Saturday.

According to the report, the operatives had access to “top-secret secrets” of talks with international allies as well as personal messages with Truss’s close friend Kwasi Kwarteng, who later held the position of finance minister.

The texts are thought to have contained conversations with senior foreign ministers from around the world concerning the conflict in Ukraine, including information about armament supplies, it was stated.

The Mail reported that up to a year’s worth of messages were downloaded.

On “individuals’ security arrangements,” a spokeswoman for the British government declined to comment.

“The Government has robust systems in place to protect against cyber threats. That includes regular security briefings for Ministers, and advice on protecting their personal data and mitigating cyber threats,” the spokesperson added.

According to the Mail, the hack was uncovered during the Truss-winning Conservative Party leadership contest.

Rishi Sunak took over as prime minister after Truss resigned last week.

According to The Mail, messages that were intercepted by foreigners contained criticism of Johnson made by Truss and Kwarteng, “perhaps opening the door to blackmail.”

In response to pressure from inside her Conservative Party, UK Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned on Thursday, six weeks after taking the helm at 10, Downing Street. Following the economic chaos and opposition her actions caused, Truss’ departure was eagerly awaited.

In a speech delivered outside Downing Street, Truss announced her resignation and stated that a leadership election will be held within the following week. She also mentioned that she had spoken today with Sir Graham Brady, the head of the 1922 Committee.

She declared that she would serve as prime minister until a replacement was selected. She stated that a leadership contest for MPs to choose her replacement will be “finished within the next week.”

During her speech, Truss acknowledged that she was unable to carry out the mandate for which she had been chosen. “I recognise that given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” Truss said.

Mary Elizabeth Truss, a British politician who has been the secretary of state for foreign, commonwealth, and development affairs since 2021, was elected as the ruling Conservative Party’s leader and Britain’s new prime minister on September 5. She follows Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher as the third female prime minister of the UK.

She ran in a contentious party leadership race against the late finance minister Rishi Sunak, also known as Mary Elizabeth Truss. She defeated former chancellor Rishi Sunak, who received 60,399 votes, by garnering 81,326 votes among Tory members.

It’s an honour to be voted as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party, Truss said in her winning speech from the Queen Elizabeth II Centre auditorium, adding that it was one of the longest job interviews in history.

Following the election of the new Conservative Party leader, the monarch Queen Elizabeth will invite the new leader to form a government and will meet with him or her in Scotland.

Birth and Family: Truss was born on July 26, 1975, in Oxford to a Latin teacher at Bolton School and an emeritus professor of pure mathematics at the University of Leeds. In 2000, she married Hugh O’Leary, with whom she has two daughters.

Education: In the Roundhay neighbourhood of Leeds, Truss attended Roundhay School. She earned her degree in 1996 after studying philosophy, politics, and economics at Merton College in Oxford.

Professional Career: Her professional career began in 1999 when she became a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA). Later, she worked with Cable & Wireless, where she attained the position of economic director until leaving in 2005. She then ran in two elections but lost, after which she was hired as Reform’s deputy director on a full-time basis in January 2008.

Political career: Truss presided over the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association from 1998 to 2000. was chosen in the 2006 Greenwich London Borough Council election to serve as a councillor for Eltham South.

Parliamentary career: On May 6, 2010, she was elected to the House of Commons. On September 4, 2012, Truss was appointed to serve as the Department of Education’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State.

Along with this, she was given control over evaluation, curriculum change, credentials, behaviour and attendance, and a study of school nutrition.

Truss replaced Owen Paterson as Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs on July 15, 2014, following a cabinet shuffle.

In Theresa May’s first cabinet, she was appointed as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice in 2016. With this, she became the first woman in the 1,000-year history of the office to hold either role or serve as Lord Chancellor.

On July 11th, Truss was promoted to the role of Chief Secretary of the Treasury following the 2017 British general elections. Truss only stated in 2019 that she might run for the Conservative Party leadership to follow May, but she supported Boris Johnson.

She was given the job of Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade in exchange for her backing of Boris Johnson. Truss was also named Minister for Women and Equalities after Amber Rudd resigned from the Boris Johnson administration.

Johnson elevated Truss from the position of Secretary of International Trade to Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs during the 2021 Cabinet reorganisation. She succeeded Margaret Beckett as the second woman to hold the position.

On July 10, 2022, Truss declared her intention to contest for the leadership of the Conservative Party as various scandals dogged British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and ultimately led to his resignation.

When running for office, she pledged to slash taxes right away and combat the nation’s soaring inflation. The majority of the leaders of the ruling Conservative Party who have backed her during her campaign have been particularly interested in her views on free trade.

The 47-year-old foreign secretary easily defeated her opponent, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, by a margin of about 57 to 43 percent following a protracted election that lasted all summer and was decided by just over 170,000 Conservative members, or a tiny fraction of the electorate in Britain.

At a brief victory speech delivered at the announcement in a conference centre in the heart of London, Ms. Truss said it was a “honour” to be chosen after “one of the longest job interviews in history.”

In order to address tax cuts and the energy issue, she has promised a “radical plan.”

Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher were the first two female prime ministers of the UK; Ms. Truss will be the third.

On Tuesday, once Johnson gives Queen Elizabeth II his letter of resignation, she will legally assume her position.

After a two-month-long wait since former Prime Minister Boris Johnson vacated his post after several scandals being unearthed amongst the Conservative Party, the Party has announced their leader as Liz Truss, who will assume the post of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

She beat her competitor Rishi Sunak to Britain’s highest post. Truss had emerged as the two candidates of the Tories and Truss won the majority vote amongst Conservative Party in which over 1.7 lakh Tories voted.

Sunak received a total of 60,399 votes and Truss bagged 81,326 votes.

Truss inherits a Britain that has been embroiled in deep recession, high inflation and a period where its primary foe, Russia, has invaded Ukraine and thrown the European Continent into a complete state of chaos.

No Media reports suggested an official statement being issued by MEA of a possible meet-up between PM Modi and Lavrov.

For the past many days several Foreign Ministers graced India with their presence. Sometimes informing well in advance and sometimes landing with a surprise visit like the likes of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visits India amidst the Russia-Ukraine crisis and hopes India to orchestrate a deal between Kyiv and Moscow. His visit also happens at a time when Daleep Singh (US deputy national security adviser) and Liz Truss (British Foreign Secretary). Also this week European Union’s Special Envoy (Indo-Pacific), Gabriele Visentin landed in New Delhi.

Sergei Lavrov after completing his 48 hrs tour in China, came to India. India has remained silent during the UN Security Council’s resolution against Russia. So far it has not commented on the Russian offensive against Ukraine. To add to its neutral stance India remained silent over a resolution staged by Russia on Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis.

India has been looking for a resolution using the highest level of diplomacy and dialogue to voice its concern over the ongoing war.

Factly speaking PM Narendra Modi called Russian President Vladimir Putin when Putin unleashed a full-blown war against Ukraine on 24th February, followed by March 2nd and 7th as well. Narendra Modi also happened to have had a call, twice with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy.

At the Parliament hearing External Affairs Minister Jaishankar clearly stated India’s Stance on the Russo-Ukraine conflict and since then it has been one for an immediate ceasefire between the 2 warring countries (Russia and Ukraine).
