Nifty 50 climbs to 24,197.95 as Sensex gains 0.40% in afternoon trade; FMCG sector leads with a 1.39% increase amid volatile market conditions.

The Indian stock market experienced a volatile session on 29th April 2026, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex both showing gains despite a sharp pullback from intraday highs. The Nifty 50 rose to 24,197.95, marking a 0.42% increase from its opening level of 24,096.90. Meanwhile, the Sensex climbed to 77,553.02, up 0.40% from its open. Market sentiment was influenced by a surge in crude oil prices, which exceeded $115 per barrel, creating pressure across global markets.

Index movements

The Nifty 50 opened at 24,096.90 and reached an intraday high of 24,334.70 before retreating to its current level of 24,197.95. The index’s trajectory showed a steady climb in the morning session, peaking around midday before experiencing a decline in the afternoon. The Sensex followed a similar pattern, opening at 77,245.83, hitting a high of 77,982.51, and then settling at 77,553.02. The Bank Nifty, however, faced a slight decline, currently at 55,552.85, down 0.15% from its opening of 55,634.50.

Sectoral performance

The Nifty FMCG index emerged as the top gainer among sectoral indices, rising by 1.39% to 51,772.90 from its opening of 51,065.30. The Nifty Realty index also showed strength, increasing by 1.26% to 807.60. On the other hand, the Nifty Media index declined by 0.90%, settling at 1,465.50. Other sectors such as Nifty Auto and Nifty IT posted moderate gains of 0.67% and 0.59%, respectively.

Market breadth

The broader market indices reflected mixed trends. The Nifty 100 index rose by 0.27% to 25,127.60, while the Nifty 500 saw a marginal increase of 0.06% to 22,888.75. However, the Nifty Midcap 50 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices recorded declines, down 0.59% and 0.56%, respectively, indicating some pressure in the midcap segment.

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are making their long-awaited return to Earth aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft.

After spending over nine months on the International Space Station (ISS), the duo is set to land at approximately 3:27 am IST on Wednesday.

NASA will begin live coverage of the landing at 2:15 am IST on its streaming platform NASA+, along with official broadcasts on X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube.

The reentry process is expected to be challenging, with NASA noting that Crew-9 will be difficult to spot in the daytime as it reenters Earth’s atmosphere at 5:57 pm EDT.

Ahead of the return, astronaut Nick Hague, reflecting on his own experiences, took to X to express his admiration for the ISS and its contribution to humanity’s progress. “My spaceflight career, like most, is full of the unexpected,” Hague wrote, calling it a “privilege” to have played a role in the station’s 25-year legacy.

Williams and Wilmore’s return marks the conclusion of a significant mission, contributing to research and technological advancements aboard the ISS. As their spacecraft makes its final descent, anticipation grows for a safe and successful landing.

The result was expected to be better than the previous years this time as over 1.5 lakh students received 90 per cent marks in the previous year.

The CBSE board has declared the results for over 14 lakh students earlier today, this has been the first-ever result without exams. The results would be available to download from the cbse.nic.in and the students can also get the mark sheets from digilocker.gov.in.

The CBSE board results of 2021 had been computed on the basis of the student’s performance in their class 12 internals, class 10 finals, and their class 11 finals.

The formula was made after a lot of debate by the board for the year 2021, and for the year 2022 batch, a new assessment formula had been created.

This year 11.51 per cent of students had received 90 per cent and above marks, and over 5.37 per cent of students received more than 95 per cent in the CBSE board exams. However the number of 90 per cent scorers has been the same as the previous year, but the number of scorers in the 95 to 100 per cent scorers is almost double.

The number of 90% scores is the same as last year but the number of students in the 95-100% bracket is almost double.

The result was expected to be better than the previous years this time as over 1.5 lakh students received 90 per cent marks in the previous year. The CBSE board had asked the schools to moderate the marks and rationalize the scores as reports had suggested that many schools gave high marks. However, the number of students scoring above 90 per cent has been expected to be high.

For the college admissions, the cut-off would go up, and the Board has more than 1.5 lakh students in the 90 per cent above bracket in 2021. In the previous year, the cut-off of Delhi University admissions went up to 100 per cent, however, there has been no formula or scheme released by the university for rationalizing the cut-off for this year.

The rise in the 90 per cent scorers had been seen by many boards including the CBSE board.

The girls have done better than boys, although the pass percentage for girls has been at 99.67 per cent and for boys has been at 99.13 per cent, but the difference is almost 0.54 per cent.
