Berri stated that Abbas Araghchi confirmed to Lebanese officials that Lebanon is included in any agreement aimed at stopping hostilities. His remarks come amid continued regional tensions and diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation.

Addressing the possibility of any agreement with Israel, Berri emphasized that Lebanon would require firm guarantees, citing concerns over compliance. “Any Lebanese agreement with Israel requires guarantees because it does not adhere to its commitments,” he said.

Berri also accused Israel of violating an existing ceasefire agreement, stating that breaches occurred despite commitments from Hezbollah to uphold the truce. The claim highlights ongoing disputes over ceasefire implementation and mutual accusations between the sides.

On the domestic front, Berri stressed the importance of national cohesion, saying Lebanon is relying on “internal unity and the Arab umbrella” to navigate current challenges. He also underlined the significance of coordination among key state institutions.

“The relationship between me and the presidency of the republic and the presidency of the council of ministers is solid and crucial for consolidating stability,” Berri said, pointing to cooperation among Lebanon’s leadership as a stabilizing factor.

There has been no immediate response from Israeli authorities to Berri’s statements. The situation remains tense, with diplomatic efforts ongoing and multiple actors involved in attempts to maintain or restore a ceasefire.

The remarks underscore the fragile nature of the current situation in the region, where ceasefire arrangements continue to face challenges amid competing narratives and security concerns.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has reaffirmed Israel’s intention to work directly with the Lebanese government toward a long-term goal...

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has reaffirmed Israel’s intention to work directly with the Lebanese government toward a long-term goal of peace and normalization between the two nations. Speaking on the progress of ongoing diplomatic efforts, Minister Saar identified the influence of Hezbollah as the primary obstacle to achieving this objective, stating that the group remains a common threat to both Israeli security and Lebanese national sovereignty.

According to official statements, Israel and Lebanon have engaged in direct negotiations facilitated by the United States to address security concerns along their shared border and to explore a broader political arrangement. While these talks have been described as historic, the process faces significant domestic challenges in Lebanon and rejection from Hezbollah itself, which has vowed to oppose any outcomes resulting from the diplomatic discussions. Despite this opposition, Israeli officials continue to emphasize that they have no major disputes with the Lebanese state and that resolving the issue of armed non-state groups is a prerequisite for moving into a new phase of bilateral relations.

The diplomatic framework currently being discussed includes a cessation of hostilities and measures to enable the Lebanese government to assert its authority within its territory. Israel has insisted that any durable agreement must ensure its security against future attacks, while concurrently offering a path toward normalized cooperation if the security environment is successfully addressed. The negotiations are expected to continue in Washington, representing a sustained attempt by both governments to navigate the complexities created by the recent regional conflict.

As these discussions progress, the international community remains attentive to the ability of the Lebanese government to effectively implement security measures and exert control over its territory. Israeli leadership maintains that the path to a peaceful relationship depends heavily on the successful disarming of Hezbollah and the restoration of Lebanese sovereignty. The ongoing talks highlight a significant, albeit challenging, diplomatic shift aimed at stabilizing the northern border and redefining the nature of the relationship between Israel and Lebanon.

The Lebanese government has issued a grave warning regarding the country’s escalating economic and humanitarian crisis, as the ongoing conflict continues to devastate public infrastructure and deplete essential revenue streams. Finance Minister Yassine Jaber recently underscored that the nation is grappling with an “unprecedented reality,” as public revenues heavily dependent on tax and customs collections have declined sharply since the escalation of hostilities in early March 2026.

The 2026 state budget, initially set at approximately $6 billion with expectations of stability, is currently unraveling as daily war-related losses push the country back toward a significant deficit. With conflict-related damages now estimated to be in the billions of dollars, the state’s capacity to maintain basic services and stabilize the national currency is severely compromised. The humanitarian toll is equally severe, with more than 1.2 million people forcibly displaced including 350,000 children creating an overwhelming demand for resources that currently outstrips available aid.

Minister Jaber has emphasized that the reliance on a cash-based economy, necessitated by the collapse of the formal banking sector, remains fundamentally unsustainable. The government has called for an urgent and comprehensive international response, warning that without a swift injection of support and the implementation of long-stalled reforms, the country risks a total institutional collapse. As essential services remain critically underfunded, the combination of mass displacement, infrastructure destruction, and fiscal instability has trapped the nation in what observers describe as a deepening, prolonged crisis. With humanitarian assistance expected to decline further in the coming months, the window to prevent a total systemic failure is narrowing rapidly.

The Israeli military has issued an urgent evacuation directive for residents in seven specific towns across southern Lebanon, citing the presence of Hezbollah infrastructure in these areas. The affected towns include Mevdaon, Shukin, Yahmor, Arnon, Zutr, and Kafr Tibnit, with inhabitants instructed to move at least 1,000 meters away from their current locations immediately to avoid potential military operations.

The warning, delivered via official military channels, explicitly states that any individual remaining in proximity to sites used by Hezbollah risks their life, as the military continues to target militant assets within the region. This latest directive follows a broader series of evacuation orders that have affected dozens of communities throughout southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley since early March.

The situation on the ground remains volatile, and international observers are closely watching for signs of further escalation as the military continues its campaign against Hezbollah’s operational capacity in the south.

Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri has defended the government’s decision to engage in negotiations with Israel, stating that the move was aimed at preventing a prolonged and devastating conflict, as tensions continue along the southern border.

“WE RESORTED TO NEGOTIATING WITH ISRAEL TO AVOID A PROLONGED WAR,” Mitri said, underlining the government’s strategic choice amid ongoing hostilities. His remarks come as the region witnesses continued clashes despite a recently extended ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

Mitri further emphasised the internal political backing for the negotiations, stating, “THE GOVERNMENT’S DECISIONS AND THE PRESIDENT’S SPEECH ARE THE ELEMENT OF STRENGTH IN THE NEGOTIATIONS.” He indicated that Lebanon’s official stance is being shaped through coordinated institutional efforts, reflecting both executive decisions and presidential direction.

At the same time, he made clear Lebanon’s position on territorial and sovereignty issues, asserting, “LEBANON IS NOT PREPARED TO ACCEPT THE OCCUPATION.” The statement comes amid continued Israeli military activity in parts of southern Lebanon and ongoing disputes over security arrangements along the border.

Recent reports indicate that the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah remains fragile, with violations reported from both sides. Hezbollah has dismissed the truce as ineffective, citing continued Israeli strikes, while Israel maintains that its actions are necessary for self-defense.

The United States has played a central role in mediating the situation, with President Donald Trump announcing a three-week extension of the ceasefire following diplomatic engagements involving Israeli and Lebanese representatives.

Despite these efforts, the ground situation remains volatile, with continued exchanges of fire and political divisions within Lebanon over how to handle negotiations with Israel. Hezbollah has opposed direct talks, further complicating the government’s diplomatic approach.

Mitri’s remarks reflect Lebanon’s attempt to balance military realities with diplomatic engagement, as authorities seek to prevent escalation while maintaining national sovereignty and internal political stability.

In a promising development for the region, the second meeting between Israeli and Lebanese officials will reportedly take place on Thursday in Washington, D.C.

As per reports, the talks will bring together Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, and Lebanon’s Ambassador to the United States, for continued discussions hosted by the U.S. This follows the first historic face-to-face meeting held recently at the U.S. State Department, which many described as constructive and encouraging.

THE SECOND MEETING BETWEEN ISRAEL AND LEBANON WILL TAKE PLACE ON THURSDAY IN WASHINGTON, WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF AMBASSADOR YECHIEL LEITER AND THE LEBANESE AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED STATES – SOURCES

— First Squawk (@FirstSquawk) April 20, 2026

Ambassador Leiter and his Lebanese counterpart are expected to build on the positive momentum from their initial talks. Both sides appear focused on finding common ground, particularly on issues affecting the security and stability of the region, including the future role of armed groups and pathways toward lasting peace.

After the first meeting, Ambassador Leiter shared an optimistic message, noting that the two countries found themselves “on the same side” on key matters. He described the conversation as “wonderful” and highlighted a shared desire to move forward without being held back by external pressures.

These direct talks, mediated by the United States, mark a rare and welcome moment of dialogue between the two neighbors after decades of tension. Many in the international community are watching closely, hoping this new round of discussions will help reduce hostilities and open the door to greater understanding and cooperation.

The people of both Israel and Lebanon have endured enough conflict. Meetings like this Thursday’s one carry a simple but powerful message: dialogue is possible, and even small steps can lead to brighter days ahead.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has spoken by phone with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, thanking Washington for its ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Israel–Lebanon conflict, according to official Lebanese‑presidency statements published on 16 April 2026. The call, which took place in the context of intense regional diplomacy, underscored Beirut’s eagerness for a durable halt to hostilities that have devastated large parts of southern Lebanon and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.

In the conversation, Secretary Rubio reaffirmed that the United States would continue its active mediation aimed at achieving a ceasefire, which he described as a necessary prelude to building longer‑term peace, security, and stability in Lebanon. U.S.‑linked diplomatic briefings indicate that the call aligned with broader efforts to solidify a three‑way engagement between Washington, Israel and Lebanon, including planned contacts between President Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under American facilitation. The Lebanese presidency has publicly welcomed the U.S.‑led initiative, framing it as a critical step toward ending the current war phase and creating conditions for the return of displaced populations.

The discussion also touched on the need to address both immediate security concerns and longer‑term political and reconstruction‑related issues, with Lebanese officials stressing that any ceasefire and subsequent peace process must respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and the return of displaced citizens to their homes. International open‑sources identify the call as part of a wider diplomatic push that includes direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli envoys, which have been hosted in Washington with Rubio’s personal involvement as mediator.

A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is not expected anytime soon, despite public statements from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting progress toward de-escalation, according to Israel Today newspaper, citing high-level informed sources.

The report comes amid heightened diplomatic activity, including rare direct talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington this week — the first such contact in decades — and Trump’s recent comments teasing potential dialogue between the leaders of both countries.

US President Trump has publicly expressed hope for “breathing room” between Israel and Lebanon, noting that leaders from both sides could hold talks as early as Thursday. He described the situation as a “separate skirmish” from the broader U.S.-Iran ceasefire and indicated openness to an end to hostilities.

Ongoing Military and Diplomatic Context

Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has continued intermittently even as broader regional tensions involving Iran have seen a fragile two-week pause. Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and beyond have persisted, while Lebanese officials express hope for a breakthrough “soon” in separate reporting.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio hosted the historic Washington meeting, focusing on long-term security arrangements rather than an instant truce. European allies have added pressure for de-escalation, but Israeli sources emphasize that any agreement must address core threats to northern Israeli communities.

Italy’s Foreign Minister has said Rome is ready to host the upcoming negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, offering to act...

Italy’s Foreign Minister has said Rome is ready to host the upcoming negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, offering to act as a neutral venue for talks aimed at stabilising the volatile Israel–Lebanon frontier. Speaking on 13 April 2026, the minister stated that Italy will provide “all necessary support and infrastructure” to ensure that the talks can proceed in a secure and conducive environment. The offer comes amid repeated cross‑border shelling and rocket exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah‑linked groups in southern Lebanon, which have already caused hundreds of civilian casualties and displaced tens of thousands.

Italian diplomatic sources indicate that Rome prefers a multilateral‑style format, with modest involvement from one or two European capitals or UN representatives, to help de‑escalate tensions and reduce the risk of miscalculation. The Italian Foreign Minister framed the readiness to host as part of broader European efforts to prevent the Israel–Lebanon front from becoming a permanent theatre of war and to protect regional trade and energy routes that pass through the eastern Mediterranean.

The proposal has been communicated to both Beirut and Jerusalem through quiet‑diplomacy channels, with Rome stressing that the venue would be strictly non‑partisan and focused on ceasefire‑related issues, disengagement, and, where possible, broader security‑confidence measures. Lebanese officials have responded cautiously, welcoming the gesture while insisting that any talks must address core national‑security concerns and the presence of armed groups near the border. Israeli envoys have told open‑source channels that they are assessing the Italian offer and will coordinate with Washington and European partners before deciding on the timing and format of the proposed negotiations.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has described the ceasefire between the United States, Israel, and Iran as “highly fragile” and has urged that Lebanon be included in the negotiations immediately. Speaking in London, Starmer warned that the current truce could easily collapse if key actors are left out of the diplomatic process. He singled out Lebanon, where sustained Israeli‑Iran‑linked exchanges have caused repeated civilian‑area casualties, saying that any durable peace‑formula must formally incorporate Beirut’s security and sovereignty concerns.

Starmer also criticised Iran for what he called “shamefully” exploiting the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Tehran of using its control over the narrow waterway as a leverage tool rather than a neutral commercial corridor. He argued that Iran’s actions in the Strait risk not only regional stability but also global energy‑supply chains and freedom of navigation, and insisted that the situation can only be addressed through a multilateral, rules‑based framework.

The British Prime Minister announced plans to collaborate with French President Emmanuel Macron to organise an international conference on the Strait of Hormuz, with the goal of establishing a joint‑security and trade‑stability mechanism that includes littoral states, major importers, and key naval‑powers. He said the conference would seek to prevent future blockades, reduce the risk of military accidents, and ensure that commercial shipping can move freely without being held hostage to political or military ultimatums. The move is being framed in open‑source diplomatic channels as part of London’s effort to position the UK as a central coordinator in the broader Middle East‑stability effort, alongside the US‑brokered dialogue.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has postponed his planned travel to the United Nations in New York and to the United States due to the current security and political situation in the country, according to official Lebanese channels on 11 April 2026. The decision was announced by the Prime Minister’s office, which cited the ongoing hostilities in southern Lebanon, high‑level diplomatic pressure linked to the US‑Iran‑Gulf ceasefire framework, and the need for the head of government to remain in Beirut to coordinate crisis‑management and security responses.

Salam had been scheduled to visit the United States later this week for talks with US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as part of an effort to push Lebanon’s inclusion in broader regional peace and ceasefire arrangements. He was also expected to brief the UN Secretary‑General on the country’s stance amid the Israeli‑Hezbollah clashes and the wider fallout from the Iran‑linked conflict in the Gulf. Lebanese and pan‑Arab reporting indicated that the foreign tour had been framed as an attempt to secure stronger international backing for Lebanon’s security and humanitarian demands, as well as to push for the implementation of earlier ceasefire‑related commitments.

However, the Prime Minister’s office now says that the fast‑moving domestic‑security situation, continuous Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, and the presence of displaced civilians across several regions make his physical presence in Beirut “essential” at this stage. The Lebanese government has repeatedly stressed the risk that any prolonged absence by top leadership could create gaps in decision‑making at a time when the country’s armed forces and security agencies are already stretched by the scale of the conflict.

The postponement does not signal a complete cancellation of the planned diplomacy, officials familiar with the schedule state. Instead, contact with the UN and Washington is expected to continue through ambassadorial‑level channels and virtual meetings, including the involvement of Lebanon’s ambassador to the United States and the UN‑based Lebanese mission. The Lebanese cabinet has already adopted a resolution on 9 April committing the state to direct negotiations with Israel to resolve the conflict, and the government has said that the current delay in the Prime Minister’s travel will not alter Lebanon’s overall diplomatic strategy in the coming days.

At least twelve Lebanese State Security personnel have been killed in an Israeli strike on the southern city of Nabatieh, according to open‑source accounts circulating on 10 April 2026. The attack targeted a State Security office in the city, dealing a direct blow to Lebanon’s security infrastructure in the south amid ongoing heavy Israeli‑Hezbollah hostilities that have not been fully covered by the US‑backed Iran‑linked ceasefire.

Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon, including Nabatieh, have intensified in the days following the announcement of a two‑week truce between the United States and Iran. While Washington and Tehran describe the deal as a regional ceasefire, Israel has publicly stated that Lebanon is not included in the agreement, allowing Tel Aviv to continue military operations against Hezbollah‑linked targets and state‑associated infrastructure.

Lebanon’s presidency and official channels have condemned the Nabatieh strike as a serious escalation, highlighting that uniformed internal‑security staff rather than purely military units were hit. The incident is being treated as one of the latest episodes in a broader pattern of Israeli air and ground assaults on southern Lebanese towns and infrastructure, which have already killed hundreds of civilians and security personnel since early March 2026.

The Ministry of External Affairs has expressed deep concern over reports of a large number of civilian casualties in Lebanon, reflecting India’s growing тревога over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the region. The official statement underscores the importance of protecting non combatants and adhering to international humanitarian norms during ongoing hostilities. India’s response comes at a time when violence in Lebanon has intensified, raising fears of broader regional instability. Civilian infrastructure and densely populated areas have reportedly been affected, prompting international calls for restraint and immediate de escalation.

Emphasis on international humanitarian law

India’s statement aligns with established principles under international humanitarian law, particularly those related to the protection of civilians during armed conflict. These include the doctrines of distinction and proportionality, which require parties to a conflict to differentiate between military targets and civilian populations while avoiding excessive harm. By highlighting civilian casualties, India has implicitly called for compliance with these legal standards. The emphasis on humanitarian considerations reflects a consistent diplomatic position that prioritises civilian safety and the rule of law in conflict situations.

Call for restraint and de escalation

The Ministry of External Affairs has urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions. This call is consistent with India’s broader foreign policy approach, which favours dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes. The appeal for de escalation also reflects concerns about the potential spillover effects of the conflict, particularly in a region already marked by geopolitical volatility. Continued violence in Lebanon could have far reaching consequences for regional security and global stability.

Implications for regional and global stability

The situation in Lebanon has drawn attention from the international community, including the United Nations, which has repeatedly stressed the need to protect civilians and uphold ceasefire arrangements. India’s statement contributes to this growing consensus, reinforcing the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis. As a country with significant diplomatic and economic interests in the Middle East, India’s position carries weight in shaping international discourse. The focus on civilian protection and legal compliance underscores the importance of maintaining stability in a region critical to global energy and trade networks.

Continued monitoring and diplomatic engagement

India is expected to continue monitoring developments closely while engaging with international partners to support efforts aimed at reducing violence. The Ministry of External Affairs has reiterated its commitment to peace and stability, signalling readiness to contribute constructively to diplomatic initiatives. The evolving situation in Lebanon remains a matter of serious concern, and India’s response highlights the need for coordinated international action to prevent further loss of civilian life and restore calm in the region.

Introduction: Fragile Ceasefires and Strategic Intervention

The reported request by Donald Trump to Benjamin Netanyahu to moderate military operations in Lebanon underscores the delicate balance between military necessity and legal restraint in contemporary conflict zones. At a moment when a fragile ceasefire risks collapse, the intervention of a major power introduces a complex interplay between diplomacy, international humanitarian law, and geopolitical influence. This development must be examined not merely as a political gesture but as a legally significant act with implications for the conduct of hostilities and the preservation of international order.

Ceasefires in International Law: Legal Status and Obligations

A ceasefire, whether formal or informal, constitutes a binding commitment under international law when agreed upon by the parties to a conflict. While it does not terminate the underlying state of armed conflict, it imposes obligations to suspend hostilities and refrain from actions that would undermine the agreement. The situation in Lebanon highlights the inherent fragility of ceasefires that lack robust enforcement mechanisms. Violations, whether deliberate or incidental, may not only reignite hostilities but also raise questions of legal responsibility. Under the framework of the United Nations Charter, the maintenance of international peace and security depends on the احترام of such agreements. The request by the United States to reduce military activity can therefore be interpreted as an effort to reinforce compliance with ceasefire obligations and prevent escalation.

Use of Force and Proportionality in Ongoing Operations

Israeli military operations in Lebanon must be assessed under the principles of international humanitarian law, particularly the doctrines of distinction, proportionality, and military necessity. Even in the absence of a ceasefire, these principles impose strict limitations on the conduct of hostilities. The call to “tone down” attacks suggests concerns that ongoing operations may risk breaching these principles, particularly if they result in disproportionate harm to civilian populations or infrastructure. The principle of proportionality requires that any incidental harm must not exceed the anticipated military advantage, a standard that becomes increasingly difficult to maintain in densely populated . The involvement of external actors in urging restraint reflects the broader expectation that states adhere to these legal norms, even when pursuing legitimate security objectives.

Diplomatic Pressure and the Legality of Influence

The intervention by Donald Trump raises important questions about the role of third states in influencing the conduct of armed conflict. International law permits diplomatic engagement aimed at promoting peace and preventing escalation, provided that such actions do not themselves violate principles such as non intervention. In this context, the request to Netanyahu can be viewed as a lawful exercise of diplomatic influence, particularly as it seeks to uphold ceasefire conditions and reduce civilian harm. However, the effectiveness of such influence depends on the credibility and leverage of the intervening state. The United States, as ally of Israel, occupies a unique position that enables it to exert significant pressure, yet this also carries responsibility to ensure that its influence is used in a manner consistent with international law.

Regional Stability and the Risk of Escalation

The theatre remains a critical flashpoint in Middle Eastern geopolitics, with the potential to draw in multiple state and non state actors. Any breakdown of the ceasefire risks triggering a broader conflict with far reaching consequences. From a legal perspective, the escalation of hostilities may engage the right of self defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, particularly if cross border attacks intensify. However, the invocation of self defence must remain consistent with the principles of necessity and proportionality. The diplomatic effort to preserve the ceasefire therefore serves not only immediate humanitarian objectives but also the broader goal of preventing regional destabilisation.

Accountability and the Enforcement of Ceasefire Compliance

One of the central challenges in ceasefire situations is the absence of effective enforcement mechanisms. While international law provides a framework for accountability, including potential recourse to international tribunals, the practical implementation of these mechanisms is often limited. The role of international institutions, including the United Nations, becomes crucial in monitoring compliance and facilitating dialogue. However, political constraints frequently limit their capacity to act decisively. In this environment, bilateral and multilateral diplomacy plays a critical role in bridging the gap between legal norms and operational reality.

Strategic Communication and Legal Signalling

The public nature of the United States request carries an element of strategic communication, signalling both to Israel and to the international community a commitment to de escalation. Such signalling has legal implications, as it reinforces the expectation that states will act in accordance with international norms. At the same time, it reflects the broader use of rhetoric as a tool of statecraft, where legal and political considerations are closely intertwined. The effectiveness of such signalling depends on consistency between words and actions.

Conclusion: Law, Diplomacy, and the Preservation of Peace

The request by Donald Trump to Benjamin Netanyahu to moderate military operations in Lebanon illustrates the complex relationship between law and diplomacy in the management of armed conflict. While international humanitarian law provides the قواعد governing conduct, the enforcement of these rules often depends on political will and diplomatic engagement. The preservation of a fragile ceasefire requires not only legal compliance but also sustained efforts to build trust and reduce tensions. In a region marked by persistent instability, the alignment of legal principles with strategic action remains essential to preventing further escalation and maintaining international peace.

Lebanon will attend a three-nation conference in Washington next week in an attempt to arrange a ceasefire with Israel, but a high-ranking Lebanese government official stated that no ceasefire means no talks with Israel. According to the US Department of State, next week’s talks will be held in Washington between Israeli and Lebanese delegates to secure a ceasefire agreement. The talks have been scheduled by Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s office. Ambassador Michel Issa of Lebanon, Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, and Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad will head the discussions.

But a Lebanese government official speaking to Reuters said that Beirut wants to see a ceasefire prior to any discussions with Israel. “No talks under fire,” he asserted. The discussions in Washington follow an ongoing dispute over whether Lebanon was part of the tentative US-Iran ceasefire agreement reached on Tuesday. Israeli troops have reportedly slain 303 and injured 1,150 civilians in Lebanon as of Wednesday; these attacks were among the most violent since Hezbollah’s participation in the war in early March. Whereas Pakistanis acting as brokers in the discussions along with Iran claim that Lebanon was indeed included in the ceasefire deal, the United States and Israel adamantly refuse such a claim. The Israeli prime minister ordered the government to conduct talks with Lebanon in order to disarm Hezbollah and attain peace, but denied the existence of a ceasefire in Lebanon.

Ali Fayyad, a Hezbollah MP, refused to negotiate directly with Israel, stating that the government must insist on a ceasefire being made a prerequisite before anything else is done. The Shiite militant organization has been launching rockets against northern Israel, saying that such attacks will go on unless the Israeli attacks on Lebanon end. This conflict may not only sabotage the ongoing talks in Lebanon but may also jeopardize other discussions between the United States and Iran taking place this coming weekend in Islamabad.

The first round of direct US-Iran ceasefire talks scheduled for today in Islamabad appears to be at serious risk, with...

The first round of direct US-Iran ceasefire talks scheduled for today in Islamabad appears to be at serious risk, with Pakistan media reporting that the Iranian delegation has not yet reached the Pakistani capital.

Despite earlier announcements and preparations, conflicting signals from Tehran have created fresh uncertainty around the high-stakes negotiations brokered by Pakistan.

Why the Talks Are in Doubt Right Now

No Arrival Confirmed: Multiple Pakistan-based reports indicate the Iranian team, expected to be led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, has still not arrived in Islamabad.

Iran’s Condition: Iranian state media (including Fars News) has made it clear — no talks and no delegation until Israel completely stops its attacks on Lebanon. Tehran views continued operations in southern Lebanon (including the Litani region) as a violation of the ceasefire understanding.

US Position: The United States, led by Vice President JD Vance along with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, maintains that the two-week ceasefire applies only to direct strikes on Iran and does not include the separate Israel-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon.

Current Situation on April 10, 2026

Pakistan had invited both sides for face-to-face negotiations starting today to build on the fragile two-week conditional ceasefire. While the US side appears ready and an advance team is already in place, the absence of the Iranian delegation means the opening round is either delayed or may not happen as planned.

This standoff adds to existing pressures on the truce, including:

Reports of intense hostile drone activity over Iranian cities

Disagreements over management of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s demand for full compensation and stronger control over the strategic waterway

Is first round of US-Iran ceasefire talks at risk today?

Yes, the first round of US-Iran ceasefire talks is at clear risk today. Without the Iranian delegation in Islamabad, substantive negotiations cannot begin as scheduled. The coming hours will be critical in determining whether diplomacy can overcome the Lebanon impasse or if the fragile truce faces further setbacks.

US President Donald Trump has asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reduce the intensity of Israeli bombing in Lebanon...

US President Donald Trump has asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reduce the intensity of Israeli bombing in Lebanon in order to aid the chances of successful negotiations with Iran, according to open‑source reports citing NBC‑affiliated accounts on April 9, 2026. The reported request comes amid a fragile two‑week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which does not fully cover the continued Israeli‑Hezbollah fighting in Lebanon.

Multiple open‑source summaries indicate that Trump communicated to Netanyahu that heavy bombing in Lebanon risks undermining diplomatic efforts with Tehran and could complicate the limited pause in the wider Iran‑US‑Israel conflict. The same sources note that Israel has publicly stated its Lebanon operations lie outside the formal ceasefire terms, even as Washington seeks to keep the Iran‑linked truce from collapsing.

Reports also highlight that senior US and Israeli officials have been in close contact in the days leading up to and after the ceasefire announcement, with Trump and Netanyahu reportedly discussing the balance between military pressure and room for diplomacy. The reported plea to dial down strikes in Lebanon is framed as a US‑driven attempt to give negotiations more breathing space while still allowing Israel to maintain pressure on Hezbollah and other Iran‑linked targets.

Lebanon has remained a major flashpoint, with continued Israeli air and ground operations against Hezbollah infrastructure and Iranian‑linked positions despite the US‑Iran truce. Iran and its allies view such strikes in Lebanon as a form of ceasefire‑related violation, while Washington and Tel Aviv argue that the conflict in Lebanon is a separate security issue.

The reported advice from Trump to Netanyahu illustrates the tension between Washington’s desire for a diplomatic opening with Tehran and Israel’s insistence on continued military action in Lebanon as part of its broader regional security posture.

Key highlights

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister has said that any durable peace in the region must include Lebanon and that the coming hours are “very critical,” according to statements attributed to him in open‑source Iranian media . The comments come as the fragile two‑week Iran–US ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan, faces its first major test over divergent interpretations of whether Lebanon is covered by the truce.

The Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that a meaningful regional peace cannot be achieved while Israel continues to carry out air and ground operations inside Lebanon, which Tehran views as part of the broader Iran–Israel–US conflict landscape. He called on the United States to use its influence over Israel to halt the attacks, framing Washington’s ability to stop Israeli strikes as a key benchmark for the credibility of the ceasefire.

Iran has repeatedly described Israeli bombardment of Lebanese territory in recent days as a “grave violation” of the ceasefire framework, while Washington and Tel Aviv insist that Lebanon lies outside the formal terms of the Iran–US understanding. Pakistani mediators, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, have publicly stated that the ceasefire is intended to apply regionally and have urged restraint on both sides, underscoring Islamabad’s role as the main channel between Tehran and Washington.

Iranian officials have warned that continued Israeli action in Lebanon could prompt Tehran to reconsider its participation in the truce, including possible military escalation and further disruption of strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Lebanon’s Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine confirmed on Thursday that 203 people were killed and over 1,000 were wounded in Wednesday’s devastating wave of Israeli airstrikes. This was the deadliest single day of the conflict, and the Israeli military described it as its largest coordinated strike since the war began.

The Israeli attacks involved fifty fighter jets and about 160 munitions. The IDF named this operation “Eternal Darkness.” They struck central Beirut without warning, hitting at least five different neighborhoods in the city’s central and coastal areas. Several attacks occurred in busy commercial and residential spots during rush hour, which caused widespread panic in the streets. Health Minister Nassereddine stated that Lebanon faced a “dangerous escalation” after Israel launched more than 100 airstrikes across the country within 10 minutes, targeting Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, and southern Lebanon. He said, “Ambulances are still transporting victims to hospitals,” urging international organizations to help the Lebanese health sector.

The attacks have significant geopolitical implications, coming just hours after a US-Iran ceasefire was announced. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called the attacks a “massacre,” and Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz again in response. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the strikes violated the negotiating framework that Trump had agreed to. An Israeli airstrike also targeted a cemetery in the Bekaa Valley village of Shmestar during a funeral, killing at least ten mourners. Three girls died in an attack on the coastal town of Adloun. Doctors Without Borders reported that its healthcare staff were injured by Israeli forces at Hiram Hospital in Tyre.

Since Israel stepped up its military campaign in early March, bombardments and ground operations have killed around 1,700 people in Lebanon and displaced more than 1.2 million from their homes. Trump, speaking to PBS NewsHour, stated that Lebanon was not part of the ceasefire deal because of Hezbollah. He added that the issue in Lebanon would be addressed.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has clearly stated that Lebanon is not included in the two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.

In her remarks, Leavitt emphasized that the temporary truce focuses on direct US-Iran hostilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, but does not cover operations or conflicts involving Hezbollah in Lebanon.

This official White House position aligns closely with statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who earlier today said Israel supports the suspension of U.S. strikes on Iran but explicitly clarified that “the two-week ceasefire does not include Lebanon.”

The clarification comes amid conflicting claims, including from Pakistani mediators who suggested the truce might extend to all regional fronts.

Key Elements of the US-Iran Two-Week Ceasefire

The conditional agreement, which President Donald Trump has called a “total and complete victory”, includes:

Suspension of U.S. airstrikes on Iranian targets for two weeks.

Iran immediately reopening the Strait of Hormuz to safe international maritime traffic.

Indirect negotiations beginning soon in Pakistan, covering uranium enrichment, sanctions relief, and nuclear site issues.

Trump’s outline of a “productive regime change” in Iran, removal of buried nuclear material, and progress on 15 negotiation points.

Iran’s military has firmly stated it will continue supporting resistance groups in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq, signaling that the two-week US-Iran ceasefire does not extend to Tehran’s regional proxy networks.

The declaration comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a temporary truce, which includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a pause in U.S. airstrikes on Iranian territory.

Iran Reaffirms Support for Axis of Resistance

In a clear message, Iran’s armed forces — including the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — reiterated their commitment to backing allied groups across the region, commonly referred to as the “Axis of Resistance.”

These groups include:

Hezbollah in Lebanon

Hamas and other factions in Palestine

Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen

Islamic Resistance in Iraq and other Shia militias in Iraq

The statement emphasizes that Iran views support for these allies as a core strategic policy that remains unchanged, even as direct U.S.-Iran tensions see a temporary de-escalation.

Potential Challenge to the Two-Week Ceasefire

This position creates a nuanced situation for the fragile ceasefire:

The US-Iran agreement focuses primarily on halting direct strikes between the two countries and ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

However, it does not appear to cover Iran’s indirect support for proxy forces.

This aligns with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s earlier clarification that the truce excludes Israeli operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah. Netanyahu has maintained that Israel will continue targeting threats from Iranian-backed groups.

Earlier today, Iraq’s Islamic Resistance announced it would halt its own activities for two weeks in alignment with the broader de-escalation. It remains to be seen whether Iran’s latest vow will influence proxy behavior on the ground.

In a surprising turn of events, Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry has stated that the government in Beirut is ready to engage in direct talks with Israel. This announcement could lead to a significant change in one of the Middle East’s longest-standing rivalries. Lebanon and Israel have technically been at war for decades, with a border characterized by hostility, conflict, and mutual distrust. The two nations have never held formal direct negotiations. All previous agreements, including ceasefire understandings and border discussions, took place indirectly through intermediaries like the United States and the United Nations.

Beirut’s announcement comes at a time when there is a broader ceasefire between the United States and Iran. This suggests that Lebanon’s leadership under President Joseph Aoun is moving quickly to position the country favorably within a changing geopolitical landscape. After welcoming the US-Iran truce and promising to seek Lebanon’s place in a lasting regional peace, the Foreign Ministry’s statement represents the boldest step yet toward that goal.

The timing is both brave and strategic. With Hezbollah’s patron Iran agreeing to a ceasefire with Washington, Lebanon now has the chance to pursue its own diplomatic path, something that was not possible before. Hezbollah’s grip on Lebanese foreign policy remains significant, but it may be facing its biggest challenge in years. For Israel, this announcement is both an opportunity and a test. How Jerusalem responds to Beirut’s proposal, especially while continuing military strikes in Lebanese territory, will reveal much about the chances for lasting peace. The Middle East is changing rapidly. Lebanon’s remarkable announcement might become one of the most important diplomatic moments in this turbulent period.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has warmly welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. However, Israel has made it clear that Lebanon will not be part of the truce, continuing its military strikes on Lebanese territory with devastating results. Aoun’s response showed cautious optimism, tempered by the stark political reality. He viewed the ceasefire as a positive step for regional stability but acknowledged that Lebanon remains exposed and vulnerable, outside the safety of the agreement while Israeli strikes continue to claim lives and damage infrastructure in the country.

In a strong statement, Aoun committed to pursuing diplomatic efforts to ensure Lebanon is included in any lasting regional peace settlement. His message was clear: Lebanon will not be left behind as a forgotten front in a conflict it did not start and cannot easily escape. Lebanon’s situation is deeply fragile. The country still carries the physical and psychological scars from years of conflict, economic collapse, and political stagnation. Its institutions are weak, the economy is shattered, and its people are exhausted by an endless cycle of war and crisis. For ordinary Lebanese citizens, the ceasefire announcement may have briefly sparked hope, but this has quickly faded with the ongoing Israeli military actions on their land.

President Aoun’s readiness to engage diplomatically, rather than just through rhetoric, reflects the practical limits facing Beirut. Lebanon does not have the military strength to confront Israel directly and must rely on international diplomacy and multilateral pressure to secure its place in any peace agreement. Whether the international community will respond to Beirut’s request and advocate for Lebanon’s inclusion in a wider regional settlement is one of the most urgent and unresolved questions of this tense situation.

The ink had barely dried on the US-Iran ceasefire announcement when it became clear that the fragile truce would not...

The ink had barely dried on the US-Iran ceasefire announcement when it became clear that the fragile truce would not stop violence across the region. Israel continued military strikes in southern Lebanon, killing eight people in the port city of Sidon. Israel has made its stance clear. It does not believe the ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran applies to the Hezbollah-Israel front. From Jerusalem’s viewpoint, the conflict in Lebanon is separate and distinct. Israel plans to handle it on its own terms, regardless of any diplomatic deals involving Iran’s nuclear program and wider military issues.

The strikes on Sidon highlight the complex nature of the regional conflict. While the US-Iran ceasefire may have paused the most intense military exchanges of recent weeks, the broader Middle East remains filled with interconnected conflicts, proxy issues, and unresolved grievances that no single agreement can fully address. So far, Hezbollah has shown restraint. It has not launched rockets across the border or claimed attacks against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. The Iran-backed group is expected to clarify its official stance on the ceasefire soon. This statement could be crucial in deciding whether the fragile calm persists or falls apart quickly.

The situation creates a delicate and dangerous paradox. A ceasefire that ends the US-Iran war but allows tensions on the Lebanese front to escalate risks generating a false sense of stability. This could collapse suddenly if Hezbollah chooses to respond to Israeli strikes or if Israel intensifies its actions. The world is watching Hezbollah’s next move very closely.

An entire family, including a man, his wife, and their two daughters, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the district of Nabatiyeh in southern Lebanon on Wednesday. This attack highlights the worsening humanitarian crisis as the country’s death toll continues to rise.

According to Al Jazeera, Lebanon’s overall death toll has reached 1,318 since the conflict began. Among the dead are at least 125 children, prompting strong international condemnation. The number of injured in four weeks of fighting is now close to 4,000.

Southern Lebanon is the center of Israel’s ongoing ground invasion, which has been in effect for several weeks. Israeli airstrikes have relentlessly targeted towns and villages in the south, as the military advances in what it calls focused operations against Hezbollah infrastructure and personnel. Hezbollah has not shown any signs of reducing its own attacks. The Iran-backed militant group continued to launch strikes against Israeli forces inside Lebanese territory, especially around the town of Antara, where it has targeted Israeli troops with rockets. The group also reported artillery and drone attacks as part of its ongoing efforts.

In addition, Hezbollah has persisted in firing rockets and drones into northern Israel, stating that these strikes target Israeli military personnel, bases, and barracks across the border. The ongoing attacks have forced tens of thousands of residents in northern Israel to remain away from their homes. As civilian casualties rise and a ceasefire seems unlikely, there is increasing pressure on the international community to take diplomatic action as Lebanon prepares for further escalation.

Hezbollah has claimed a series of rocket and missile attacks targeting Israeli military bases, troops, and defense installations in northern Israel and southern Lebanon during a coordinated morning assault. The Lebanese armed group continues to maintain an aggressive operational pace against Israeli forces.

The attacks began early in the morning when Hezbollah launched a rocket strike on Israeli soldiers stationed at the settlement of Avivim at 6:00 AM. Minutes later, at 6:30 AM, rockets were fired at Israeli soldiers and vehicles in the strategic border town of Al Malikiya, followed almost immediately by another strike on Kiryat Shmona, one of northern Israel’s largest cities, at 6:40 AM. The assault intensified in the Al-Aadaissah area of southern Lebanon, where two separate rocket attacks targeted Israeli soldiers in the Khanouq area at 8:15 AM and 8:20 AM. These back-to-back strikes suggest a deliberate effort to overwhelm Israeli response and interception capabilities in the region.

The most significant strike of the morning occurred at 4:30 AM when a missile targeted the Mishmar al-Karmel missile defense installation located south of Haifa. This attack on an Israeli missile defense asset clearly shows Hezbollah’s intent to degrade Israel’s air defense systems. This approach indicates a calculated and increasingly complex tactic that goes beyond simple retaliatory rocket fire.

The strikes cover a wide geographic area, from the southern Lebanese border towns of Al-Aadaissah and Al Malikiya, through northern Israeli communities like Avivim and Kiryat Shmona, all the way to Haifa. This demonstrates Hezbollah’s ability to strike simultaneously across multiple fronts and at various ranges. Israel has not yet issued an official response to the morning’s attacks. These strikes occur as ground operations in southern Lebanon continue, while diplomatic efforts to establish a ceasefire remain stalled.

Israeli defense officials said this directive is part of ongoing efforts to target militant infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

Local residents, many of whom have faced repeated displacement over the past year, feel scared and frustrated as they hurry to gather their belongings and flee to safer places. Aid organizations working in the area have warned that the humanitarian situation is getting worse, with thousands of families already having trouble accessing food, shelter, and medical care. The Lebanese government condemned the evacuation order, calling it a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and urging the international community to step in. Officials in Beirut warned that continued Israeli military action in the south could destabilize the fragile ceasefire arrangements established in recent months.

The United Nations peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation and urged all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize civilian protection according to international humanitarian law. This latest evacuation order comes amid wider regional instability, with diplomatic efforts to create a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah largely stalled.

According to a report in the New York Times, Iran’s main adversaries, particularly the United States and Israel, have refrained from direct military actions against Iran for years, preferring to avoid conflict with its formidable military structure.

The ongoing military conflict between Israel and Iran is turning into a serious concern. How ready is Israel to handle a war on multiple fronts against Iran and its partners? Iran’s main ally in the Middle East is Hezbollah in Lebanon. Additionally, the Houthi militia in Yemen and various Shi’ite militias in Iraq may also join, or support, Iran militarily. In the event of a prolonged military conflict between Israel and Iran, the former would need to consider several unpredictable factors.

A major concern is whether Iran’s unofficial partners would join in the conflict.

“Israel has been preparing for the possibility of a multi-front war for a long time,” Arye Sharuz Shalicar, an Israeli army spokesperson, said to DW. He said they had concentrated on three key areas:

They have expanded their defence systems—especially air defences, such as Iron Dome, Patriot, David’s Sling (also known as Magic Wand), and the Arrow system

They are constantly improving their offensive capabilities. Defence, alone, may not be enough. But, under the principle, “attack is the best defence”, launching a counterattack may be inevitable.

Israel is building a wide-ranging regional and international alliance

Comparative Military Strengths

Iran’s GDP is $413 billion compared to Israel’s $539 billion. This economic difference extends into their military spending, as well, with Iran allocating about $10 billion to its military budget, while Israel spends approximately $24.4 billion—nearly 2.5 times more.

A significant advantage for Israel is the backing it receives from the United States. Annual US military aid to Israel amounts to $3.8 billion, enhancing Israel’s arsenal with more advanced weapons and greater force readiness. This support positions Israel as one of the most powerful militaries in West Asia.

Contrast Between Military Personnel

Iran appears stronger in sheer numbers. With a population of approximately 89 million, Iran far outnumbers Israel, which has about 10 million residents. This numerical advantage extends to military size, as well. Iran’s military is one of the largest in West Asia, boasting around 580,000 active personnel and 200,000 trained reservists. In contrast, Israel has about 170,000 active military members and 465,000 reservists, making Iran’s active force more than three times that of Israel’s.

According to a report in the New York Times, Iran’s main adversaries, particularly the United States and Israel, have refrained from direct military actions against Iran for years, preferring to avoid conflict with its formidable military structure.

Afshon Ostovar, associate professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School and an expert on Iran’s military, explained to an American news outlet that Iran had avoided being targeted not because its adversaries were afraid, but because they understand that a war with Iran would be extremely serious. This detail was also highlighted by Firstpost.

Iran-Israel Tank Strength Comparison

Regarding ground forces, Israel has 1,370 tanks, while Iran has 1,996. Iran manufactures its own tanks, such as the Zulfiqar series and Karar MPT, generally based on older designs. Additionally, Iran produces its versions of the T-72, T-54 and T-55 tanks, which are seen as less capable compared to Israel’s advanced Merkava Mark IV tanks, considered among the best armoured tanks available.

Air Power is the Key to Engagement

According to the Global Firepower Index, Israel has a stronger air force than Iran, possessing 612 fighter jets compared to Iran’s 551. However, the quality of the aircraft is also crucial, Hinz explained to DW. Israel Air Force includes at least 66 F-15s, 175 F-16s and 27 F-35 stealth fighters. It is considered one of the best in the world and also has around 63 F-4s and 26 F-14s.

Hinz mentioned that Iran did not, particularly, depend on its aircraft strength, as sanctions have largely prevented it from updating its fleet. He noted that Iran managed to buy some aircraft in the 1990s and is currently interested in acquiring Russian-made planes. Most of Iran’s aircraft, including the F-4 Phantom, F-5 Tiger and F-14 Tomcat fighter jets, feature outdated technology from the 1970s and 1980s.

Overview of Their Naval Capabilities

Although neither Iran, nor Israel, has a significant naval force, Iran is recognized for its capability to conduct small boat attacks. Global Firepower notes that Iran has a total fleet strength of 101 ships compared to Israel’s 67. Iran also has 19 submarines, while Israel has five.

And Now, Iran’s Missile Capability

Tehran has concentrated mainly on developing missiles and drones. Yet, it is uncertain how effective these would be against an Israeli air assault. According to a report from The International Institute for Strategic Studies, quoted by First Post, Iran possesses one of the biggest collections of ballistic missiles and drones in West Asia. This arsenal includes cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles and ballistic missiles that can travel up to 2,000 kilometres, capable of reaching any target, including Israel.

Iran has openly showcased its accumulation of drones and missiles in military parades, and aims to expand its drone export business. Iranian drones are currently being used by Russia in Ukraine and have also appeared in the conflict in Sudan. Alexander Grinberg, an Iran expert at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, told DW that recent Iranian drone and missile attacks have highlighted areas where Israel needs to strengthen its defences. He said these drones could be relatively easy to shoot down due to their slow speed, noting that even simple machineguns could do the job. However, the challenge lies in the vast number of drones—and not just their type.

Grinberg explained that the attack on Sunday (April 14, 2024) showed the importance of Israel being able to defend against attacks from many drones. He emphasised that Israel needed to be ready for such scenarios. Additionally, some of the missiles were intercepted by Israel’s allies—the US, UK and Jordan. He stated that, regardless of whether 300 or 3,000 missiles were launched, some would, inevitably, get through the defence shield. He emphasised the importance of having an effective civilian defence system, including an early warning system and air raid shelters, to handle such situations.

And a Look at Israel’s Nuclear Arsenal

Regarding nuclear capabilities, Israel holds an advantage. A report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), as mentioned by Firstpost, estimates that Israel possesses around 80 nuclear warheads. About 30 of these are gravity bombs, deployable via aircraft, while the other 50 can be launched using Jericho-II medium-range ballistic missiles. These missiles are reportedly stationed with their mobile launchers in underground facilities at a military base east of Jerusalem.

Comparative Regional Dynamics

According to the Global Firepower Index, 2024, the military strengths of Israel and Iran are quite close. Iran is ranked 14th worldwide, with Israel just behind at 17th. The index also provides a head-to-head comparison of the two militaries. It shows that Iran surpasses Israel in manpower, as well as in the number of tanks and armoured vehicles. The countries are divided by other nations—Iraq and Jordan—with about 1,850 kilometres (1,149 miles) separating Jerusalem and Tehran.

Fabian Hinz, a Middle East expert at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), told DW a conflict would likely not be a traditional war, but more of an exchange of long-distance strikes. He further noted that any military conflict between Israel and Iran would mainly involve aerial engagements. However, considering their geographical positions, these factors may not be the most crucial in the event of a military conflict between Israel and Iran.

Iran’s Regional Reach through Proxies

Iran supports, and equips, a network of proxy militias across West Asia, known as the ‘axis of resistance’, including such groups as the Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, militias in Syria and Iraq and both Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza. Although they are not officially part of Iran’s military, these proxy militias are well-equipped, combat-ready and strongly committed to Iran—and ready to support Tehran, if needed.

Spanning from Lebanon to Pakistan, this network is crucial to Tehran’s security, durability and regional sway. These proxies give Iran a strategic advantage and broad influence across the region, while also shielding Iranian leaders from the direct consequences of their actions.

Hezbollah, Potential Game Changer: According to a Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington report, Hezbollah is, possibly, the world’s most armed non-state entity—often described as Iran’s ‘spearhead’. The European Union has labeled Hezbollah’s military division a ‘terrorist group’ due to its numerous rocket attacks on Israel. Estimates suggest that Hezbollah has between 120,000 and 200,000 rockets and, according to a CSIS study, Iran could rapidly re-supply the Hezbollah militia if war breaks out, as reported by DW.

Most of Hezbollah’s weaponry includes unguided short-range projectiles. But the group has significantly enhanced its collection of long-range missiles, according to the IISS’s Hinz. Additionally, he noted that Hezbollah could launch attacks from Syrian soil.

Israel could deploy the Iron Dome system to counter missile strikes from Lebanon, Hinz explained. He added that, while these defence systems were, generally, always prepared and performed very well, the sheer volume of rockets presented the primary challenge.

Tensions escalate as Hezbollah claims responsibility for firing missiles and drones at Israel’s northern Bedouin village of Arab al-Aramshe, injuring at least seven people. The attack targeted an Israeli military facility, with two individuals severely wounded. This development adds a new dimension to the conflict, raising concerns about further violence and retaliation in the region.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group, has been involved in the conflict in the region for many years. The group has claimed responsibility for several attacks on Israeli targets in the past, including rocket attacks and border skirmishes. The latest attack on Israel’s northern Bedouin village of Arab al-Aramshe is a significant escalation in the conflict, with at least seven people injured.

The Israeli military has responded to the attack, with the Israeli Air Force conducting strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. The situation remains volatile, with both sides threatening further retaliation. The international community has expressed concern about the escalating violence and has called for restraint from both sides.

The conflict in the region is complex and deeply rooted in the region’s history and politics. The involvement of non-state actors like Hezbollah adds a new layer of complexity to the conflict, with the potential for further violence and retaliation. The international community must work together to find a peaceful solution to the conflict and address the underlying issues that have contributed to the violence.

Earlier this month, the UN warned that decontaminating Gaza from unexploded munitions would require "millions of dollars" and "many years" of work.

The United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) has reported finding significant amounts of unexploded ordnance, including 1,000-pound (450kg) bombs, inside schools and on roads in the city of Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, after Israeli forces withdrew from the area.

In a statement, UNRWA said it faced “significant challenges in operating safely due to the presence of unexploded ordnance [UXOs], including 1,000-pound [450kg] bombs inside schools and on roads.”

Earlier this month, the UN warned that decontaminating Gaza from unexploded munitions would require “millions of dollars” and “many years” of work.

The discovery of unexploded ordnance in civilian areas has raised concerns about the potential risks to Palestinian civilians, particularly children, in the aftermath of the conflict.

Escalating Tensions in Lebanon

Meanwhile, tensions have escalated along the Israeli-Lebanese border. The Israeli military carried out a drone strike on the southern Lebanese town of Ain Baal, near Tyre, according to reports from Lebanon’s an-Nahar media.

The strike killed at least one person and injured several others, according to medical sources cited by Al Jazeera Arabic. The attack came after several drones from Lebanon hit northern Israel, reportedly injuring three Israelis.

The escalating violence between Israel and Lebanon has raised fears of a potential broader conflict in the region, with both sides accusing the other of provocations.

International calls for de-escalation and a return to dialogue have intensified as the situation remains volatile.

Earlier today,

“A short time ago, two explosive drones crossed the territory of Lebanon towards the territory of Israel and exploded in the area of Beit Hillel. The incident is under investigation,” the Israeli military said in a statement.

The recent Israeli missile strike on Damascus underscores heightened tensions in the region, targeting a residential building in the Kafr Sousa district, resulting in casualties.

The recent Israeli missile strike on Damascus has once again heightened tensions in the already volatile region. According to reports from Syrian state media and activists, the strike targeted a residential building in the Kafr Sousa district, resulting in casualties.

Syrian military sources stated that two civilians lost their lives in the attack, while a monitoring group reported that two foreigners and a Syrian civilian were killed. The area targeted is known to be frequented by senior figures from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

Israel has refrained from officially commenting on the incident, but it has a history of conducting airstrikes in Syria, particularly targeting Iranian-linked assets. These strikes have intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October, in response to cross-border attacks by Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups.

The ongoing conflict underscores the broader geopolitical tensions in the region, with Iran’s extensive network of allied armed groups operating across the Middle East posing a direct challenge to Israel’s security interests. The involvement of groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, both designated as terrorist organizations by Israel, the U.S, UK, and others, further complicates the situation.

In addition to the strike in Damascus, reports indicate further escalations with explosions heard in the city after what was believed to be another Israeli attack on Iranian-backed militia positions. Meanwhile, in southern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah operational command centers, leading to civilian casualties.

The incident also highlights the broader regional dynamics, with Lebanon’s National News Agency reporting Israeli strikes in southern Lebanese villages. Hezbollah responded by firing at Israeli military positions, escalating tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Furthermore, allegations from Iran’s oil minister accusing Israel of sabotage to its gas pipeline network further exacerbate the already heightened tensions between the two adversaries.

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community closely monitors developments in the region, with concerns over the potential for further escalation and the implications for regional stability.

Overall, the Israeli missile strike on Damascus serves as a stark reminder of the complex and volatile nature of the Middle East, where geopolitical rivalries and proxy conflicts frequently erupt into violence, with devastating consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire.

Iran accuses Israel of sabotaging a natural gas pipeline, leading to explosions, heightening tensions between the two nations amidst broader regional conflicts.

Iran has accused Israel of orchestrating a sabotage attack on a natural gas pipeline, resulting in multiple explosions. According to Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji, the attack was a deliberate plot by Israel to disrupt gas services and endanger the distribution network. However, Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, consistent with its usual approach to such operations.

The explosions occurred on February 14, damaging a gas pipeline stretching from Iran’s Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province to cities along the Caspian Sea. This pipeline, spanning approximately 1,270 kilometers, originates from Asaluyeh, a key hub for Iran’s offshore South Pars gas field.

The timing of the attack is significant, as it coincided with the anniversary of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, marking 45 years since the revolution’s inception. Owji likened the incident to a series of unclaimed assaults on gas pipelines in 2011, further heightening tensions between the two nations.

Israel’s history of targeting Iran’s nuclear program adds a layer of complexity to the situation. Recent remarks by the head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog highlighted concerns over Iran’s transparency regarding its atomic program. Amidst these developments, armed groups supported by Tehran, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Houthi rebels in Yemen, have engaged in hostilities against Israel, exacerbating regional tensions.

The Houthi rebels, in particular, continue to pose a threat by targeting commercial shipping in the region, prompting retaliatory airstrikes from the United States and the United Kingdom. Despite sustained airstrikes, the rebels demonstrate resilience, as evidenced by recent attacks on a ship in a strategic strait and the downing of a valuable American drone.

In parallel, suspected Israeli strikes have targeted Damascus, Syria, where Iran’s Revolutionary Guard members are believed to be present. These incidents underscore the broader geopolitical dynamics and proxy conflicts in the region, with Iran and Israel engaged in a protracted struggle for influence.

The accusations and counter-accusations between Iran and Israel underscore the volatile nature of their relationship and the potential ramifications for regional stability. As tensions persist, the international community closely monitors developments in the Middle East, mindful of the potential escalation of conflict and its broader implications.

Hezbollah commander, two fighters, and seven civilians were killed in an Israeli strike in Nabatiyeh, increasing Wednesday's death toll to 10. Tensions rise amid escalating Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

According to a security source on Thursday, a Hezbollah commander, along with two other fighters and seven civilians, were killed in an Israeli strike in south Lebanon’s Nabatiyeh. This increased the death toll from the previous day’s raid. The total number of civilian casualties from Israeli strikes on Wednesday rose to 10, marking the highest death count since hostilities began in October. The Hezbollah commander, Ali al-Debs, had previously been targeted and injured in an Israeli drone strike in Nabatiyeh on February 8, as stated by the security source, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak to the media.

Two additional Hezbollah fighters who were with Ali al-Debs on the ground floor, along with seven civilians from the same family on the building’s first floor, were also killed in Wednesday’s strike in Nabatiyeh. Hezbollah announced on Thursday that three of its fighters, including Debs, had died, without specifying the location of their deaths. The Israeli army reported a soldier’s death from unclaimed rocket fire from Lebanon and confirmed airstrikes on Lebanon. Earlier, the National News Agency identified five of the deceased civilians as Hussein Barjawi, his two daughters, his sister, and his grandson, with his wife and niece also killed.

Emergency responders rescued a boy from the debris, and at least six others were hospitalized. The Israeli strike was conducted using a drone armed with a guided missile. Tensions between the Israeli military and Hezbollah have escalated since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in October, sparking concerns of a potential full-scale war. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli surveillance equipment and a barracks, while Israeli jets targeted numerous Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is expected to address the situation on Friday. The ongoing violence has resulted in the deaths of at least 259 people in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah fighters, and 40 civilians. On the Israeli side, 10 soldiers and six civilians have been killed.

France presents plan to ease tensions between Lebanon and Israel, including Hezbollah withdrawal and border negotiations, amidst ongoing conflict dynamics.

France has presented a written proposal to Beirut, aiming to quell hostilities with Israel and resolve the contentious Lebanon-Israel border dispute. The document, delivered by French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne, advocates for the withdrawal of fighters, including Hezbollah’s elite unit, from the border by 10 kilometers.

The plan, part of ongoing Western mediation efforts, seeks to end clashes between Hezbollah and Israel, which have escalated alongside the conflict in Gaza. While the proposal outlines steps towards a potential ceasefire and border negotiations, Hezbollah insists on waiting until the Gaza war concludes before engaging in formal de-escalation talks.

The three-step plan involves a 10-day process of de-escalation, culminating in border negotiations. France, with historical ties to Lebanon, aims to consolidate various diplomatic initiatives to foster peace in the region. However, Hezbollah’s reluctance to negotiate until the Gaza conflict subsides presents a significant obstacle.

The proposal suggests that Lebanese armed groups and Israel cease military operations against each other, paving the way for the withdrawal of combat forces from the border region and the deployment of Lebanese army troops. While Israel has received the proposal and is considering it, concerns have risen in Beirut regarding certain elements, including demands to dismantle premises near the border, which could target Hezbollah-affiliated civilian institutions.

Despite the proposal’s potential, tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border remain displaced, with casualties mounting since the conflict began in October. Western envoys continue to engage with Lebanese officials, although direct talks with Hezbollah have been limited due to its terrorist designation.

The proposal draws parallels with previous ceasefire agreements and calls for international support for the Lebanese army’s deployment and socio-economic development in southern Lebanon. As tensions persist, the proposal offers a glimmer of hope for de-escalating the conflict and initiating constructive dialogue between Lebanon and Israel. However, the path to lasting peace remains fraught with challenges, requiring sustained diplomatic engagement and cooperation from all parties involved.

The Israeli government approved on Thursday a maritime demarcation deal with Lebanon, setting for the first time a border between the two countries, which have been in an official state of war since 1948.

The “historic” agreement would strengthen Israel’s security and economy, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid told a government meeting, adding that 17 per cent of the profits from Lebanon’s Qana natural gas field in the disputed area would be shared with Israel.

Earlier Thursday, Lebanese President Michel Aoun signed a letter approving the deal.

The deal, first announced on October 11, lays out a demarcation line between the two countries in the disputed zone in the eastern Mediterranean, where several natural gas fields are located.

After a rocket hit northern Israel, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said on Monday. “In response to the projectile launched from Lebanon into northern (Israel). Earlier tonight, IDF Artillery forces are currently targeting the source of the launch in Lebanon”. The IDF tweeted. The projectile launched from Lebanon fell overnight in an open field near a Kibbutz community in northern Israel, with no damage or injuries reported. No group has claimed responsibility for the fire. IDF spokesman Ran Kochav told Kan Reshet Bet Radio that Palestinian groups likely fired the rocket.
Lebanon's political landscape faced a drawback after spending months without a full-fledged ruling government to look after the economic, social, political, welfare and many other aspects.

Recently, the Lebanese presidency announced the formation of a new government after distorting the 13-month long deadlock. This made the country undergo a deep financial tension in turn leading its citizens to a state of poverty, stated the report published by the Associated Press.

Lebanon’s political landscape faced a drawback after spending months without a full-fledged ruling government to look after the economic social, political, welfare and many other aspects. The inactive government came into being after the devastating explosion that took place at the Beirut port on August 4, 2020. This made the then Prime Minister Hassan Diab resign from his post and dissolve his government.

Catering to the economic clampdown, the opposite political groups have condemned the idea of the formation of a new government. This disagreement comes into the picture after the presidency decided to fill in the void.

On Friday, the latest government was formed with an announcement by the Lebanese Presidency. The government will be governed by Najib Mikati, a billionaire businessman. This was sanctioned by the office of President Michel Aoun, which said: the decree has been signed.

Najib Azmi Mikati, prominent face in the political structure of Lebanon is a businessman who served as the Prime Minister of Lebanon in 2005 and later renewed his term from 2011 to 2014.

On Thursday, the oil prices soared higher, which had been supported due to the tensions in the Middle East but had failed to regain most of the losses that occurred in the previous day after a surprise build in crude stockpiles in the US which was the world’s top oil consumer.

On Wednesday Brent Crude Oil Futures and US West Texas Intermediate Crude Futures fell by more than $2. Brent Crude Oil futures had raised by 0.2 per cent, which is 14 cents to $70.52 a barrel by 0132 GMT, whereas US West Texas Intermediate crude futures had increased by 18 cents or by 0.3 per cent to $68.33 a barrel.

Earlier, there had been a projectile fire to Israel, from the Lebanese territory to the Israeli Aircraft, which struck the military had said it to be rocket launch sites in south Lebanon.

On Wednesday, Lebanon launched two rockets that struck Israel, which was responded with artillery fire in between the regional tensions over the alleged Iranian attack on the oil tanker in the Gulf in the previous week.

After the attack last Thursday, an exchange was made when Israel blamed Iran for a tanker off the coast of Oman, in which two crew members, a Briton and a Romanian were killed but Iran had denied any involvement in the attack.

On Wednesday, the US State Department had mentioned that they believed that the Iranians had hijacked Panama flagged Asphalt Princess tanker which was in the Gulf of Oman but Iran was not in a position for the confirmation of the attack.

The US Energy Information Administration in the previous session had said that the crude stockpiles rose by an unexpected 3.6 million barrels in the previous week due to which the prices fell steeply.

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia had said that it expects the Brent oil prices to rise by $85 a barrel by the fourth quarter as the demand for oil outpaces supply growth.

A massive fire is raging at the port of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, a little more than a month after a huge explosion devastated the port facilities and surrounding area.

There was no immediate information about what caused Thursday’s fire, which sent a large column of black smoke into the sky. The Lebanese army said the blaze was at a warehouse where oil and tyres are stored in the port’s duty-free zone.

Army helicopters were taking part in efforts to extinguish the fire. Local TV stations said companies with offices near the port have asked their employees to leave the area. Panicked residents leaned out of windows to call out each other and warn of the new fire.

Some 191 people were killed and more than wounded when 2,750 tonnes of confiscated ammonium nitrate that were stored in a port warehouse for almost seven years exploded on August 4.

Amidst political crisis and unrest going on in the aftermath of the major explosion in Beirut, Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab on Saturday announced that he would request for early parliamentary elections.

“We cannot get out of this crisis without early parliamentary elections,” he said, reading a statement.

The decision has come after angry crowds took to the streets on Saturday protesting against the government’s inefficiency in handling the catastrophe which killed over 150 people and injured over 5,000.

Police had also fired tear gas and rubber bullets to the mass gathered in Martyrs square and outside other government ministries demanding the fall of the regime.

Diab announced in a televised speech that he would stay in the post for two more months till the major political parties can reach an agreement. He would also introduce a bill to conduct early elections.

The decision is expected to calm the angry uprising.

Five officials have already given their resignation and some high-profile officials have also resigned in protest.

Since the popular uprising in October which led to the fall of the Saad Hariri Government, public dissatisfaction of the ruling class has been widespread and has accelerated the financial country to a level that the country has never seen.

Many countries have already poured in their support for Lebanon immediately after the disaster.

The U.S Agency for International Development on Friday said that it will provide more than $15 million in assistance, including food aid for 50,000 people for three months. Medical supplies and pharmaceutical supplies have also been extended by the U.S to help Lebanon which is under huge crisis due to a shortage of food and other supplies.

He also announced that France would organize an international aid conference to raise emergency relief funds and assured the people that aid to rebuild the city would not go to “corrupt hands”

The blast had taken the lives of more than 150 people, injured over 5,000, and caused immense destruction of property in the entire region. The cause of the blast is under investigation.

WHO Appeals for $15 mn aid for Lebanon after Beirut blast

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is appealing for $15 million to cover emergency health needs in Lebanon following the Beirut port explosion that hit amid an economic crisis and rising coronavirus cases.

The blast, which killed 150 people and injured more than 5,000, also destroyed 17 containers holding WHO medical supplies including personal protective equipment, the agency’s regional office for the Middle East said in a statement late on Thursday.

Five hospitals in the area affected by Tuesday’s blast are either not functioning or partially functioning, and early reports indicate that many health centres and primary care facilities are also damaged or out of action, it said.

Up to 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes and need food or shelter, which “also risks accelerating the spread of COVID-19 and the outbreak of other diseases,” said Iman Shankiti, WHO Representative to Lebanon.

earlier Beirut: Prime minister Hassan Diab said in a short televised speech, has appealed to all countries and friends of Lebanon to extend help to the small nation, saying: “We are witnessing a real catastrophe.”

Diab’s speech came the morning after the blast killed at least 100 people and wounded thousands.

The blast struck with the force of a 3.5 magnitude earthquake, according to Germany's geosciences center GFZ, and it was heard and felt as far away as Cyprus more than 200 kilometers (180 miles) across the Mediterranean.

A massive explosion rocked Beirut on Tuesday, destroying most of city’s port, damaging buildings across the capital and sending a giant mushroom cloud into the sky. More than 70 people were killed and 3,000 injured, with bodies buried in the rubble, officials said.

The blast struck with the force of a 3.5 magnitude earthquake, according to Germany’s geosciences center GFZ, and it was heard and felt as far away as Cyprus more than 200 kilometers (180 miles) across the Mediterranean.

Abbas Ibrahim, chief of Lebanese General Security, said it might have been caused by highly explosive material that was confiscated from a ship some time ago and stored at the port. Local television channel LBC said the material was sodium nitrate. Witnesses reported seeing a strange orange-colored cloud like that which appears when toxic nitrogen dioxide gas is released after an explosion involving nitrates.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo extended his deepest condolences to the people of Beirut and said the United States is closely monitoring the situation. ‘Our team in Beirut has reported to me the extensive damage to a city and a people that I hold dear, an additional challenge in a time of already deep crisis,’ Pompeo said in a written statement.

Health Minister Hassan Hamad said emergency teams streamed in from across Lebanon to help, and the injured had to be taken to hospitals outside the capital. Hamad added that hospitals were barely coping and offers of aid were pouring in from Arab states and friends of Lebanon.

Beirut’s governor, Marwan Abboud, broke into tears as he toured the site. Prime Minister Hassan Diab vowed that ‘those responsible will pay.’

Local TV stations reported that a fireworks warehouse was involved. The fire then appeared to spread to a nearby building, triggering a more massive explosion, sending up a mushroom cloud and generating a shock wave.

One of Israel’s top bomb experts, Boaz Hayoun, said fireworks could have been a factor setting off the bigger blast. ‘Before the big explosion, … in the center of the fire, you can see sparks, you can hear sounds like popcorn and you can hear whistles’.

Some of those injured lay on the ground at the port, Associated Press staff at the scene said. A civil defense official said there were still bodies inside the port, many under debris.

The blast came at a time when Lebanon’s economy is facing collapse from the financial crisis and the coronavirus restrictions. Many have lost jobs, while the worth of their savings has evaporated as the currency has plunged in value against the dollar. The result has thrown many into poverty.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL, said one of its ships in the port was damaged and a number of its peacekeepers were injured.

It was reminiscent of Lebanon’s civil war and took place only three days before a UN-backed tribunal was set to give its verdict in the killing of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in a truck bombing more than 15 years ago.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a tweet that his country was sending aid. Israel offered emergency assistance through international intermediaries, its Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Iran, Hezbollah’s patron, also said it was ready to help.
