Congress MP Rahul Gandhi reached his parliamentary constituency, Wayanad. Here he participated in the inauguration ceremony of Amrut Drinking Water Project in Mananthavady, Wayanad. Rahul Gandhi addressed the public of his constituency there are and discussed harmony, peace, respect and affection in the country.

“With development, we also have to think about the nature of the country we’re living in. Are we creating a harmonious, affectionate and loving country? Is ours a country that looks after the weakest? Or are we developing the country and forgetting about the most basic human values? Harmony, peace, respect and affection are crucial to developing the nation,” said Rahul Gandhi.

“People who have easy access to water underestimate how difficult it is when you don’t have access to it. With the inauguration of the Amrut Drinking Water Project, many more people will have direct connections to water at their homes,” added Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to his Lok Sabha constituency is crucial before the 2024 general assembly elections. The Congress MP had already hinted at re-contesting from Wayanad seat of Kerala.

Kerela youth with Monkeypox-like symptoms dies, 20 quarantined

Twenty people were quarantined after the death of one person with monkeypox-like symptoms in Kerela’s Thrissur.

Officials in the state also mentioned that the deceased came in contact with just 10 people including friends and family.

Renjini, a member of the Education and Health Committee said “The situation is well under control, there’s no panic here as of now. The person had direct contact with only 10 people including family members and a few friends. 20 people quarantined so far.”

The Panchayat Members of the Punnayur village held a meeting to discuss the situation following the death regarding subsequent measures to be taken up.

The state health minister, Veena George has ordered a high-level inquiry into the death of a youth that was showing monkeypox-like symptoms. He had tested positive in a foreign country before returning to India. The youth hailed from Chavakkad Kuranjiyur in Thrissur district.

“The result of the test conducted in the foreign country was positive. He sought treatment in Thrissur due to severe fatigue and encephalitis and Monkeypox is not a fatal disease,” said George.

She also stated that the delay in the treatment will be investigated by the state officials.

The World Health Organisation on 23^rd July declared monkeypox a ‘global emergency’ with cases being detected across the world.

There have been 4 cases of monkeypox detected in India, with 3 from Kerala and 1 in Delhi. In another case, a man was suspected to carry the disease so he was admitted to a government hospital in Telangana’s Khammam on July 27.

Three women commit suicides within 48 hours in Kerela: Read below to know why

On June 21-22, Kerela was shocked when three suicides were committed by young women within 48 hours in the state with the highest female literacy (95.2%) in the country.

The young women left notes behind that claimed they were forced to take this deadly step because of ‘dowry harassment’.

A debate has been triggered in Kerela by the suicides about the concerning gender insensitivity prevalent in the state.

22-year-old Vismaya V. Nair was found hanging at her husband’s home in Sasthamkotta in Kollam district on
June 21 night. She was an Ayurveda BAMS student. She texted her relatives on WhatsApp before her death about the alleged torture by her husband Kiran. He is a motor vehicle inspector in the transport department. Last May, the couple tied the knot. Her father Thrivikraman is a local the Communist Party of India leader. As Dowry, he had gifted the groom a new car worth Rs 10 lakh, 1.25 acres of land, and 100 sovereigns gold.

After the bride’s family lodged a complaint with the police, Kiran got arrested on 24 June. Vismaya died due to hanging. However, it’s still not confirmed whether it was a case of suicide or murder, according to the post-mortem report. The probe is being conducted by a high-level police team headed by Inspector General Harshita Attalluri.

Archana, another 24-year-old died just 24 hours later. She was allegedly set ablaze by her husband in Vizhinjam. This took place in the Thiruvananthapuram district. The couple got married in 2020 and the girl’s family alleged dowry-related torture by the husband.

Then again on June 22, Suchithra Vishnu, a 19-year-old was found hanging at her in-laws’ home. Her husband was an army havildar posted in Uttarakhand. Her family also claimed that they suffered from dowry-related torture.

The series of dowry-related tortures and suicides have left the nation in shock while it also exposed the dark, women oppressing side of the Kerela society.

Anjana A.S, a journalism student based in Thiruvananthapuram says “A change will happen only when Kerala’s women liberate themselves from traditional roles, get out of the subordinate roles prescribed by our society.”

She added, “These numbers do not reflect the real situation in our families,” says a senior lady police officer. “Even well-educated and well-employed women are tortured over dowry, and after years of marriage. It’s the same male chauvinist mindset which also rules Kerala and its politics.”

‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan alias chosen as BJP’s CM candidate for Kerela

Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, popularly known as the ‘Metro Man’ for his role in leading the projects for building Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro as the then-Managing Director, has been chosen by the Bharatiya Janata Party as its Chief Minister candidate, according to the Indian Express.

Sreedharan, an 88-year old, is a Padma Shree awardee and had recently resigned as the Principal Advisor to Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) in June 2019 citing health issues.

Sreedharan on public platforms has shown confidence in his abilities and on March 4, 2021, said, “I am ready to contest in any seat, and victory is sure for me. I strongly believe that BJP will come to power. However, I want to contest from a constituency which is not far away from Ponanni in Malappuram, where I am residing now.”

He has promised to increase the government’s focus on the development of infrastructure and provide incentives to industries to set up in Kerela.

The ‘Metro Man’ had expressed his desire to enter politics and wanted to join the BJP specifically. The Kerela wing of BJP had been quick to respond and after Sreedharan joined the party on February 26 had said, “great day for Kerala which looks forward to politics based on development agenda.”

EC to declare States Assembly Election dates today, including West Bengal

The Election Commission of India will be announcing the schedule for Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry.

In a press conference which will be held at 04:30 PM (IST) today, the poll panel of the Election Commission will release the long-awaited dates for State and Union Territory Assembly elections.

In West Bengal, the number of polling booths has considerably increased from the 2016 State Assembly Elections from 78,903 to 1,01,790. West Bengal is likely to undergo elections during March-April period where it is being heavily speculated whether the elections will be held in seven to eight phases or just five phases compared to the 6-phase elections that had happened in 2016. This has been done in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amidst the still-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these elections will all be held in respect of the maintenance of the respective health and safety protocols. The election officials will all be required to wear masks, face shields, and gloves and use sanitizers. Voters too will be screened and follow similar hygiene.

The EC has said that 6400 of these polling booths are sensitive and will require extra security measures taken into place.

Kerala gold smuggling case: CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s private secretary, CM Raveendran appears before ED

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s additional private secretary CM Raveendran on Thursday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning with regards to the gold smuggling case, Hindustan Times reported.

Raveendran has already been summoned four times by the Central agency. He was first instructed to appear last month, but he could not as he had tested positive for COVID-19. Later, he avoided the instructions, shielding himself by citing post-COVID-19 complications. He was issued a fresh summons after he was discharged from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital last week.

Raveendran approached the high court, seeking anticipatory bail but the ED declined it, saying he was not made an accused in any case. The court is set to address his plea later in the day. CM’s other secretary, senior Indian Administrative Service officer, M Sivasankar, is already in remanded judicial custody in relation with the case. Raveendran was summoned on the basis of Sivasankar’s statement, as disclosed by a senior official of the multi-agency probe team, requesting anonymity.

Last week, the CM had tried to vouch for him, saying he was not able to attend the questioning due to ill-health. He said the Central agencies can’t take any action against him as “he holds a good track record”. He had criticised the agencies, alleging that they were just fulfilling orders as dictated by their masters in Delhi.

The gold smuggling racket was unfurled on July 5 after the seizure of 30 kgs of the metal from a consignment addressed to the United Arab Emirates consulate in the state Capital. A multi-agency team lead by the National Investigation Agency is investigating the case and 34 people have been arrested so far.
